The Hamilton Beach Flip Belgian offers the ideal blend of performance and cost. While this model certainly isn't perfect, the increased cost of getting a higher quality product won't necessarily be worth it for many consumers. This unit's cooking performance was squarely average. When set to some of the lower cooking settings, waffles would often come out unevenly cooked with varying levels of brownness across the length of the waffle. Our testers found fewer inconsistencies when set to higher cooking settings. The built-in timer was reasonably accurate and reflected the actual level of doneness selected. Our testers appreciated that the overflow basin was removable and dishwasher safe. Few models we tested have this feature. If you value cleaning convenience, this could be a key consideration. We found that batter would stick to the basin horribly unless coated with a serious amount of cooking spray. The basin is also quite large, and our testers never had any batter spill onto the counter. 
This model felt moderately safe to operate. It has no on or off switch but immediately starts heating up when plugged in, so you must remember to unplug it after cooking. The biggest issue with this model is how inconsistent it can be. While it often produces yummy and evenly cooked waffles, it will often turn out one with various levels of doneness and textures. If your looking for a decent waffle maker at a reasonable price and don't mind some cooking inconsistencies, you'll be more than pleased with this model.

Hamilton Beach 26031 Belgian Waffle Maker Review - Best Waffle Maker with Removable Plates

 The mechanism wouldn't even budge after it had cooled. After a couple minutes of working it, it finally moved but when it did the part that actually holds and locks the plate in place, part of it snapped off. It appeared that the heat melted that mechanism and that's why it wouldn't move and as such when it did broke. See photo

Good except part of the outer rim of the waffle doesn't cook. Re-ordered hoping the new one doesn't have this issue.

Disappointed waffles are done in some places not others and crisp outer in some not others. Would not buy again.

 They think of waffles as a traditional staple in their diet and eat them in varieties Americans have never known. But, with all that said, I must add that I believe the Croquade is the best flip waffle maker in the world. I know the reviews don't reflect my opinion, but it's my belief, nonetheless. All the other removable plate, flippable irons are junk compared to the Croquade

 The wattage on my new iron is 1,000 watts, which is 25% more than the Hamilton Beach. Apparently that's enough of an increase to make browned waffles versus blonde.  My history with waffle makers.

 The waffles it made weren't ever truly brown and crispy. I set the knob to the darkest setting and the waffles still only came out medium blonde. I like my waffles to be darker. The reviews contradicted the physical evidence I was seeing in my finished waffles and I couldn't figure out why the iron wouldn't brown

 The problem I had with them was they won't accept a return if it's been used even once. The reviews I've read about the Croquade waffle iron have not been glowing, however. They've complained about reliability, which made things even more confusing. Waffles are a really big deal to Belgians and Croquade has been producing them since the 1950's and claim to having sold over a million units

Major flaw in this waffle maker...

  We did opt for the copper color grills, believing they may have better and longer-lasting non-stick properties, and wanting to get away from the "flaking" black colored grills that more than one review talked about. It was a good choice..

We purchased this waffle maker to replace an older, similarly styled (flip) waffle maker that decided it was time to move on to the next life (that would be the recycled life or a landfill, wherever they took it). The old one was really nice, heavy, sturdy, and it had a light to let you know when the waffle was done. It's still available, but only for more than twice the $79.95 we paid for it a decade or more ago

 it's probably in the description someplace, and we were just probably spoiled from our other waffle maker. So each waffle needs to be timed on a clock/watch/timer so as to get it done and not over-done. If slightly under-done, you can just close the unit again and give it another minute. The time will vary based upon the temp setting, the waffle mix and maybe the day of the week

  One nice feature is that it's easy to clean up, at least with the copper grills, and assuming you don't over-fill it badly. With a little practice on the first waffle or two, I was able to determine just how much batter to pour into it using a 1-cup measuring cup, and by pouring fairly evenly all the way around the circle, I had virtually nothing to clean up. If anything oozes out between the grills, you just leave it there until everything cools down and it comes right off. There's a nice removable plate that catches any larger overflow, but if you over-fill by that much, you just need to cut back

Overall, though -- we've needed a Belgian-style waffle maker and this provides that functionality nicely.
