The Jaguar and Jag-Stang are short-scale guitars with a 24 inch scale, the Toronado typically has a 24.75 inch scale (similar to most Gibsons), and the Jazzmaster has a 25.5 inch scale which is Fender's most common scale length. If you have small hands or like doing really big bends and stretches, the Jaguar and Jag-stang might be up your alley. They tend to be pretty niche instruments, though, because most players don't prefer a short scale length.

Of all the Fender Jaguar offerings, the American Pro is my favorite because of the pickups and switching configuration. It's the only guitar I have made almost no modifications to — All I mod on American Pros are the tremolo bar/collet, replacing them with the StayTrem one. On other Jaguars, I end up replacing the bridges, pickups, and switches to match the American Pro, or have custom pickups. One exclusion is the Johnny Marr Jaguar, which is unique in its own way in terms of switches and pickups.

Sounds like the guitar for you. A Jag would be a fine first guitar.

I have had a Fender Jaguar for about a year now and I have tried so hard to like this guitar but I just can't. Mine is a Fender Player Jaguar with a Humbucker bridge pickup. If you google Fender Jaguar one of the most common comment is that the stock bridge sucks so I was aware going into it and got a Mastery bridge which I was assured would solve that problem. I do admit that the Mastery bridge is an improvement over the stock bridge but its still difficult to keep in tune and using the tremolo even a little bit will knock it right out.

* Wired the both off position of the pickup switches to be the pickups in series. After all that I have a solid playing instrument that stays in tune well (with 10 gauge strings). It probably doesn't sound exactly like a jaguar anymore, but the spirit is still there. Its less shrill, less plinky, with better sustain, but still has that weird uniqueness that makes it subtly different from either a jazzmaster or a strat.

If you like the Strat then upgrade to a Fender Player series. Or if you fancy something different there's a player telecaster, jaguar, jazz master, mustang & duo sonic to choose from.

I would look at a squier classic vibe or fender Jaguar. They have those classic humbuckers and you can really dial in some shoe gaze fuzz and ambient sounds with the right setup….
