This happens on my epson home cinema usually when I have the projector in eco mode. Must run it at full brightness to keep it from doing this.

Amazon has a good return policy so you can give it a shot, but I would recommend looking at something like the Optoma HD146X, the Epson Home Cinema 880 or the BenQ TH585. They're more in the $500-600 price range, which is about as cheap as you can go for a reliable projector from a respected brand, and they're all pretty bright.

I got an epson home cinema 1060 for under $300 from eBay and it was great.. I have big windows in my room though so I bought a 1440 instead because it's a bit brighter.. I paid a little over $400 for that on eBay as well
