If your buddy is looking for strictly overdrive and NOT distortion, I would cast a vote for the Electro-Harmonix Soul Food. Killer pedal for the price. It’s basically a clone of the Klon Centaur, an insanely expensive pedal today and one of the most sought-after pedal sounds. New, the Soul Food is about $90, but you can get them used for ~$50.
