Went mattress shopping with the wife today, and we have a few options, but I'm thinking of going diy... Looking at a king, all natural materials preferred.

Me:6'2" ~185# mostly back sleeper, hot sleeper.
Wife: 5'10" ~185#, mostly side sleeper

We liked the firmness of these two mattress we tried:

There is also a local mfg that does a 6" talalay mattress over a sturdy box spring. Not sure the IDL, but was an 8/10 in the mfgs hardness scale, and without the box spring you could definitly feel it bottom out, but when on a box spring it felt pretty good.

I'm thinking of diy, mostly to save cost, but I also like the idea of replacing parts as needed or tweaking it rather than replacing. Plus layers could be seperated as needed for moving. Otherwise we'd go with the local guy since its natural materials, should be more durable, flippable, and I'm sceptical that the cooling foams really conduct heat away vs feel cool while you heat them up. 

For a diyv setup, I'm thinking a 9" latex mattress, though at first I was planning on using pocket coils, but now I'm questioning their durability. 

 I'm thinking:
3" firm dunlop base
3" Medium middle layer(maybe talalay, maybe split layer in case wife and I want to adjust firmness) 
3" Medium talalay top

Cover:cotten knit ticking from sleep like a bear or diynaturalbedding, not quilted.

Total cost ~ $1,200-1,500 depending on middle layer.

Does that sound like it will match the firm mattresses we tried, or be to hard?

Dunlop or talalay for the middle layer? We like a little bit of spring, and I know it will make a hardness difference. That's one reason I'm considering the split middle layer, getting a medium for her and a firm for me.

My wife is skeptical, and pregnant, so making her happy is more important. If I get the middle layer wrong I don't mind taking the side she doesn't like or spending $270 to replace a twinXL section. 

We like the ikea tarva slatted base, but wondering if the slats are approve enough.
