I do plane spotting at airshows and my HF R800 with a powered mic does pretty good at giving a good representation of the sound. Granted I'm trying to capture 1 to 8 very loud sources of sound from a long ways off where you are trying to capture general ambience so my choice of a shotgun mic wouldn't work for you, but I imagine you'd get good results from a cardioid mic.
