 Is it slightly overkill? Yes I don't think anyone needs 12k right now but if you can afford it and based on like the competition as well like why wouldn't you? I think with the 12k is more about the ability to recrop and reframe rather than the actual resolution. To be completely honest with you sometimes I couldn't tell the difference between the 12k and the 8k files on my 5k screen. Even for someone like me as a solo shooter that does a lot of like landscape and outdoor shooting and licensing content I don't think I would get one I would need something that's somewhat in between the 12k and the 6k Pro so for me I don't need 12k resolution I don't think a lot of people do I would be okay with having a camera that is an 8k camera at 24 30p and has 120 frames per second with no crop in 6k and that has the ability to shoot ProRes as well. I think the ability to shoot ProRes is more important than having the 12k resolution so I would prefer a less powerful camera in terms of specs and resolution but one that is closer in terms of flexibility than the Ursa Mini Pro, the standard one or the 6k Pro or 6k

 So some of you may not know but I actually used to own the Ursa Mini Pro 4.6k a few years ago and I shot documentaries on it, I shot licensing content and even shot a short film but it was a bit too big and bulky for me to carry around the world for the projects that I was doing at the time. For the past couple of years I've used the 6k and the 6k pro as my main cameras and as you know I love the cameras, I love the image, they're really nice to use. 4k I've seen online a few people that were disappointed with the 4k footage being not as good as it should be being downscaled from 12k I didn't really notice any issue with that I think it looked fine I shot indoor and outdoors I would say though that the 4k 240 looked a little bit soft but I think it's due to the fact that you have to be in super 16 center mode and finally the file size so we'll talk about it more in depth later in the video how it is to edit those files but obviously when you shoot 12k and 8k the files are going to be huge so that's not something that I don't like about the camera or something that I think could be improved it's just something that could become an issue if you're not prepared for it I did the footage on separate hard drives just because they were filling out so quickly I was using the angel birds cards the 256 gig and I would get anywhere between 5 minutes to 15 minutes depending on the resolutions and the cards actually maxed out at 12k 60 I could only do four seconds at the time 12k 24p no issues but 12k 60 I could only do four seconds and now a quick word about today's sponsor FilmConvert I've talked about on the channel before but essentially FilmConvert enables you to add film color and film grain to your videos I've been using it since 2013 on pretty much all my work I've used it with black magic cameras the canon my drone you've got real film grain and you've got about 20 film stock to choose from and all the footage that you've seen from the 12k was actually graded with FilmConvert as well this time I didn't really want to have a look though I was more going for a neutral look because I wanted to showcase the camera's resolution and the color and the image so I didn't want to alter it too much and that's a great thing with FilmConvert is you can actually go for a proper film look or you can just have something that is a bit more natural I have already made a full dedicated video on it so feel free to check that out and don't forget to use the link in the description to save 10% so a question that I got asked a lot when I posted a video when I first got the camera and I posted stories on Instagram was how did you edit the files and what computer do you have so I'm going to read the specs of my computer just because I don't want to forget anything so I've got a 16 inch MacBook Pro with an eight core R9 processor I've got 32 gigs of ram a Radeon pro 5500 with eight gigs of video ram and a one tera SSD the computer is actually hooked up to a 5k ultra fine monitor so it's not the most recent computer but it's also quite a powerful one and the new M1 Pro and Max would be amazing though so editing the files was a lot easier than I thought it would be within DaVinci I imported all the files and playback in 12k 24p or 8k 120 was actually fine I had no drop frames whatsoever I actually exported all the files from DaVinci into transcoded them into 8k ProRes 422 so I could edit with them in Final Cut and even within Final Cut I had no drop frames whatsoever and the only time I had to change from best quality to best performance and when I started to apply effects and started grading things like that out of DaVinci it took about 45 minutes to export about 40 clips each time I've done that like maybe like 10 times or so which is actually not that bad I edited off a Samsung X5 SSD which is a super fast SSD I think it runs like at 2 gigs a second or something like that so that was fine

URSA MINI PRO 12K | REVIEW | 1 month with the Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro 12K

 Doing full width 4K at 4K 120 frames per second, you can get some very nice slow motion out of this. So once I installed DaVinci Resolve, I was kind of blown away by how editable these files were. I was able to cut 12K and 8K on a three year old MacBook Pro and it wasn't really giving me any issues. The one thing you do really want to bear in mind though is it might be very editable, but those export times will absolutely kill you

 The last thing is, please just let me plug a hard drive into my camera. It was very seamless and honestly I actually found the USB-C connection is a lot more solid than the micro HDMI connections that we find ourselves using on a lot of mirrorless cameras right now. But hopefully this gives you something to think about and if you're really curious about RAW video, be sure to read Richard Butler's recent article on DPReview.com about why RAW video might not be quite as impressive as you'd expect if you're coming from JPEG and RAW photos

 So what they've done with this pixel array is it's designed in order to bend down to 8K and 4K, keep the full width of the sensor, but it really avoids a lot of the moiré and aliasing that we usually see when we're shooting lower resolution video. Now don't get me wrong, oversampling is still the way to get the best possible image quality. You can see an example right here, if we shoot 12K and in post convert it down to 4K, you do still get better image quality than shooting in this camera's native 4K mode. But what is really cool here, like I mentioned we don't see a lot of moiré, aliasing, image quality is still very good, but when you drop down to those lower resolutions, rolling shutter does decrease dramatically

Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro 12K - Mirrorless cameras need these features!

However, the resolution cap on the 120 footage and lack of 240fps are a bit stifling--I frequently shoot pours/drops/sprays/splashes/etc. that could really use the extra frames. The Ursa 12K is impressive for res and frame rates, but it's too much camera and I simply can't justify the price.

 So the LCD lights up and you've got your audio levels here and various other settings including the frame rate and the memory status and you've got timecode across here. Now for this exercise I'm going to be recording using a little Samsung T7 SSD, very fast and should be suitable for this so that just plugs into the back here. It plugs into this super speed USB, a very high speed port designed to handle these very high data rates. And if I open the door here you can see a number of features

 You've got a choice of 12K, 8K, 6K or 4K and for each of those settings you've got a series of compressions that you can change. You can choose in this case with 12K you can have, if you're working as this one set up to do with constant bit rate, you've got a choice of 5 to 1, 8 to 1, 12 to 1 or 18 to 1 compression and the difference is that this is obviously the highest quality, we'll give you the sharpest pictures, the best resolution from the superb Super 35 sensor inside the camera but it can also put a huge strain on your resources and your editing computer unless it's really up to high spec standards. So you can actually get away with going right down to 12 or 18 to 1 compression and because of the power of the Super 35 sensor you'll get extremely good pictures at much much lower data rates that are much much easier to handle. But I'll put it back up here to 5 to 1

 So down in this open window here is the menu button which you press there and this brings up the main menu. So it's set at the moment on 12K.  That's very important. As I say for today I'm going to be recording on an SSD through the high speed port at the rear. A great big V-Lock battery on the back here and then I turn it around and you can see the screen here, a very very clear LCD screen which has got a series of menus. Each menu's got a series of little buttons at the bottom and you can step through the pages very easily to get to the one you want

 While not quite as sunny as a week ago, it was still pretty bright. The increased rightness of the screen (as noted above) made a great deal of difference. Yes - it still my clothing/face/whatever back to me, but the screen was bright enough to see what I was videoing. Game changer! I doubt I could get a better deal on a quality camcorder so I'm raising my rating from 3-stars to 4-stars

 - It seemed to have more than enough zoom power, and it zooms in and out pretty quickly. I believe you can modify the zoom speed.  Cons; - The Canon software doesn’t really work with a Mac using High Sierra. I spent nearly an hour with their tech support, and we got it “kinda" working, but not that well

 It does remind you to open the lens cover. With the record button and the zoom lever both near the rear of the camera, starting / stopping the recording and/or zooming the lens was pretty convenient. I left most of the camcorder settings in the default mode. Here are some of the pros and cons I observed for the first time out;  Pros; - The video quality was pretty good, although the background seems a bit light while the players seem too dark

 - It was a sunny day so I couldn’t see squat with the Touch Panel LCD. It was both washed out and reflected my clothing/face/whatever back to me. After getting home I read the manual and found how to increase the brightness of the screen - hopefully that will help.  For now I’m giving this product 3-stars - "It's OK"

It costs about $300 US dollars which is about $1800 less than the Panasonic GH5 that I'm filming on right now. So the question is, is it worth hunting one down in 2020? Well, stay tuned to find out

 So here are some key facts about this little camera. Firstly, it has a 57x zoom, that's ridiculous. According to their website, Canon say that it means it can range between a 32.5mm all the way to a 1853mm lens

Canon Vixia HF R800 Review (2020)

  I will go for a different brand and make sure it doesn't do this.  UPDATE: Most consumer cameras do this, due to the fact that in the old days of windows 95, when fat32 was implemented, the maximum file size was 4 gb. To maintain compatibility with most sd cards, they keep it at 4 gb, even using more modern file systems, like exFat, which do not have the file size limitation, but the cameras still split the videos. In order to get a camera that does NOT do this, one will have to look a lot

First with the good  Pros: Let me say the canon vixia hf r800 takes good quality 1080p videos 60fps. Nothing extraordinary, so it is a good camera.  Camera build quality is good. It does not feel cheap

  Now the cons:  Low light video quality is not that great. It's just ok  Picture quality requires excellent light to be great. Otherwise I find them noisy (I am no photographer and I noticed).  Now the big complain

 Here's where you charge your Device keep this plugged in and it will power and it'll bypass the battery so you can run it that way This is your record button right here microphones So as you can see for vlogging this is perfect. It's you're talking right into the microphones I've come to some really important conclusions about it for people looking Let's say to start a YouTube channel or where I think it's best suited and where I think it absolutely is not suited so let's start with This exact type of situation here Creating YouTube videos indoors. I think that this is absolutely not Absolutely not the device for this type of a video right here And the reason I say that is because I've tried a bunch of different lighting setups I've tried a bunch of different angles I cannot get any separation from the background and it always appears to be a little bit grainy I can't seem to get it to be really sharp and For this type of video me personally, I would not recommend it I would try something else definitely doesn't mean that I don't think it has some legitimate good situational usages Where you could really benefit from the features of this camera? So one of the really nice things about this is just the How it's so small and it's very versatile with that long zoom It makes it really good for trails and just recreational hiking and stuff like that And when you're done, just fold it up put it in your pocket and go on So let me show you some of the ones that I some of the situations that I love using it first and foremost outdoor in good lighting If you don't want to be carrying a bunch of stuff. This thing is so small so portable It's really good to get a lot of range And you get some pretty good footage all the way zoomed out All the way zoomed out, you know, you don't want to go into that super high 1150 Whatever nonsense digital zoom But the optical zoom capabilities of this are pretty good And you're going to get obviously footage that you could never get with your cell phone and being this small You're going to be able to see things and get footage That like I said that you would never get with your cell phone

Canon Vixia HF R800 One Year Review

 Yay over on this side You've got the camera wrapped in some bubble wrap and you get a battery now One of the nice things I do have to say is the battery on here is pretty freaking big I haven't actually unbagged this one itself This is the stock one there will be links down in the description for both this and the accessories that I'm going to end Up showing but I ended up getting a second battery Which is from a it's a non-canon brand, but it works just fine It's actually encoded so that the camera will read it and everything and it registers about three hours of charge Which is a freaking fantastic one of the downsides that I ended up finding though was coming stock in the box like this you have to charge the battery through the camera and Evidently it takes forever from the research that I ended up doing so I did end up picking up a secondary battery like I said and a charger it came as a combo and It still does take about an hour hour and a half to fully charge one of these guys But to be able to do that and have a three hours of recording time is a pretty freaking awesome now taking the camera out Of the baggie. I was kind of surprised. I'm used to when I purchase things Them having stickers all over the freaking place and this didn't it wasn't advertised as a refurbished But yeah, so it does have a flip out screen and it is Rotatable so if you're looking at this way points down so you can get some overhead shots back fully around and Then forward for vlogging one of the things you will have to pay attention to is when you turn it on it will tell you if this is closed, but it won't warn you if You shut things down and you know and it's open so you just have to remember to flip it closed It's just a little lever right here open close open close over on this side over here You have the charging port now one of the nice things that I did like about this is The fact that you can have it plugged in and running off of AC power While recording you have your plug-in down here for being able to attach it to your standard tripod You have a lever here for releasing the battery and of course your battery goes here. All right, and that's what the wide-angle on so it see it kicks back And gives you a little more field of view Looking at it, I can see Uh, you're getting a little aberration and a little flare over here on the sides Um, but as far as your center focus, it seems to be pretty good Um, I'm going to have to test this on the table and uh, so I'll do a video a little bit later on There will be links down in the description both for the camera Uh, I got in a dish

 Does this beat out? So does that beat out this guy for vlogging and just general take around? Uh, I don't think so. I actually prefer this it's uh smaller. It's more compact Uh, it is about the same size. This is a little bit heavier than the camcorder though But again, like I said, uh, I didn't grab the camcorder for taking for outdoor vlogging and things like that

I think was uh, the battery life on these Is pretty crazy right now. Um, it's at 81 minutes so that is still good, uh on a A 32 gig memory card, I think at maximum Output 1080 with 60 60 frames that gives you about an hour 128 gig should give you about four hours straight recording time um Yeah, so i'm pretty impressed with that part now

 I don't like the picture on it I don't like how it records and that's what I used for several years and it was okay But you know, I've upgraded I decided to try and pick up one of these guys Because they don't have a record limit like it can just stay on for freaking ever as long as it has power It will stay on and that will be perfect for trying to do some long live streams So on the side over here, you've got the Vixia HF R800 You've got a picture of it on this side You have some specs some more specs and even more spec getting into the box You're great by an instruction manual and registration card fold open the top and you have a bunch of goodies here You have a just standard USB cable I'm not sure why they didn't end up going with a micro USB instead of a standard But they did they do include this looks to be a probably about a 4-foot HDMI cable I don't know the quality on it. But hey free is free It's better than you having to turn around and buy one you get your power brick with of course Sony's proprietary Plug-in port. Yay over on this side You've got the camera wrapped in some bubble wrap and you get a battery now One of the nice things I do have to say is the battery on here is pretty freaking big I haven't actually unbagged this one itself This is the stock one there will be links down in the description for both this and the accessories that I'm going to end Up showing but I ended up getting a second battery Which is from a it's a non-canon brand, but it works just fine It's actually encoded so that the camera will read it and everything and it registers about three hours of charge Which is a freaking fantastic one of the downsides that I ended up finding though was coming stock in the box like this you have to charge the battery through the camera and Evidently it takes forever from the research that I ended up doing so I did end up picking up a secondary battery like I said and a charger it came as a combo and It still does take about an hour hour and a half to fully charge one of these guys But to be able to do that and have a three hours of recording time is a pretty freaking awesome now taking the camera out Of the baggie. UPDATE: If you're planning on using a neutral density filter with this camera, make sure you manually set your exposure first, or the camera will compensate for the reduced amount of light hitting the lens, adding noise and nullifying the effects of the filter.  For much of my video recordings, I have used either DSLR's or bridge cameras. While they each have their strengths, I needed something lightweight, compact and portable, but capable with good image quality, accurate autofocus, and capable of 24p recording. The Vixia Hf R800 fit the bill for what I needed, so I gave it a shot

  As far as manual controls go, you get very few of them. You can manually set white balance and specify frame rate, but no dice for shutter speed or iris. It does feature manual focus, but it's actuated by the touch screen instead of a physical control. This camera also does still photos, but the resolution and quality leave a lot to be desired

 For instance, I shot some video at night in my town, which featured traffic and business lights.  It is not the best camcorder but the price justifies what you are buying. It is a good option for those who have limited budget.

Decent camcorder for those who have limited budget

 1080p, the recording on is 1080p, 60 frames a second, good image stabilization, all this kind of cool stuff. Let's put it to the test here. So let's see some actual video with it. See how it picks up on the shade and the different lighting situations in here

 So it's a variable zoom that's all predicated on how much pressure you put on this little slider up top here. Very nice. So again, I can zoom in super slow or I can speed it up. So another nice feature to this little guy is that when it's charging, when you have it plugged into the wall to the AC power supply, I believe it's called, you can use it

 So that's a pretty quick zoom. Now for the really slow, slow zoom out. So it's a variable zoom that's all predicated on how much pressure you put on this little slider up top here. Very nice
