We wondered how and when climbing gear-giant Black Diamond would join the expanded polypropylene (EPP) movement, and the Vision is our answer. EPP foam is a relatively new material in climbing helmets—it absorbs impacts rather than shattering and is thus a more durable and protective choice—but we’re happy to see it becoming more commonplace (for more on EPP and EPS foams, see our buying advice below). Released last spring, the Vision features an EPP body, a “puck” of EPS along the crown of the head, and a polycarbonate shell that fends off dents and adds a boost in durability. At $100 and clocking in at 7.5 ounces, you simply won’t find an EPP helmet that better balances weight and price.

The Vision joins a growing field of premium EPP helmets, competing with the likes of the Petzl Sirocco and Mammut Wall Rider below. At $100 it’s the most affordable of the bunch, but the savings does come with a few tradeoffs. For one, while we appreciate the Vision’s more robust suspension system (it uses a plastic ratchet at the rear while the Petzl and Mammut use webbing), the straps around the ears cannot be adjusted for length, so you’ll want to make sure the helmet fits before buying. Further, at 7.5 ounces the Vision is slightly heavier (the Petzl clocks in at only 5.6 oz.), but still ridiculously lightweight compared to old-school models. All told, BD’s EPP helmet is a great combination of price and performance, earning it our top pick for 2022.  Currently, this polycarbonate shell protects the entire top of the helmet and then the foam. That'S on the side here, like i said, doesn't really dent that easily, which is really nice. They'Ve, also incorporated a nice system for a headlamp. You'Ve got two hooks on the very front as well as this nice strap on the back, so that the headlamp stays on the helmet and in place

 This is all really small and lightweight stuff, making the entire helmet lightweight as well. That was probably one of the first things i noticed out of the box is just how light it is now. Their small medium size comes in at 240 grams. Their medium large is only 250 grams

Back adjustment easily comes loose, uncomfortable

 This foam is in place to protect you from a big impact to the crown of your head. While the body of the helmet is made from epp foam, not to mention they have a new abs shell on the helmet one. That is much stronger than the previous abs, shell and one that black diamond says keeps the dings and dents at bay. Whoever came up with that deserves a race

 While an adjustment strap for the ear isn't necessary, it would be appreciated. As more and more, i found that the strap lays right on my earlobe, which can lead to discomfort the final quirk that i have has more to do with the rationing system and its inability to play nice with long hair. I can't tell you how many times i went to loosen the helmet to take it off and my hair gets stuck within the rationate system, but other than those few quirks. Black diamond has really made a solid helmet and without a doubt it will be a staple

Love the safety features, but some bad design

 Durable doesn't get thing really easy. So that's called EPP means expanded, polypropylene and then, in order to meet the requirements, there's a puck inside here, an EPS puck which it's expanded, polystyrene and that absorbs energy differently. So we use a dual density foam with this Polycarp shell. Another cool feature: is these integrated headlamp clips, so they're super low profile

If you're taking slings off your shoulder, you're not going to get them hung up on. That'S really annoying so so these are super low profile built right in really durable and you have your headlamp attachment clip your head torch attachment clip on the back and then a nice simple adjustment system, low profile, webbing, what's good, yeah stealth black as well yeah
