 This is their touring application. The Novice Alpine ski went away, but they kept the Freebird version, the touring version of this ski, and it's just a really well-rounded ski for that application. This thing is built with a Poplar and Pallonia blended wood core so that Pallonia takes some weight out of the core, makes it lighter and more approachable for uphill skiing, but it really doesn't sacrifice the downhill performance either, so it's a good blend. You're kind of always looking for that with not a backcountry-specific ski, but this is kind of one of those hybrid skis

I'm  a heavy, big, and strong (6'4" 265lbs/194cm 120kg) kiwi used to charging all type of  terrain except for tight trees. I hadnt skied in almost a decade but  maxed out my local North Carolina mountain very quickly (skied all trails in the  first few hours) in Volkl Mantra m5 demos earlier this year. I have  previously had big heavy k2 Seth Pistol and before that Armada Tanner  Halls that noodled really quick. I love charging but am realizing the  value in finesse with a few more years on my legs.

I  was thinking Volkl Mantra m6s (191cm), Rossignol Sender TI (194cm),  Fischer ranger FR102s (191cm), or K2 Mindbender 108Ti (193cm), Armada Declivity 102Ti (188cm).  
I just  purchased Tecnica Mach1 HV 130 boots and will get them formed before heading to steamboat in Colorado end of the month. I am planning A-basin and Taos  trips too.

I am looking at new skis.

Ski Recommendation for big and powerful skier

 It doesn't feel light to me underfoot and As you'd expect that's making for a pretty good downhill performance pretty good carving ability I have a lot of grip. I feel nice and confident on the hard snow I'm making a very nice GS turn very nice edge to edge On the steeps. I found some nice fluffy soft snow and made some nice quick snappy turns on the soft fluffy snow So for me, um, no complaints on the the free bird um You know, I just don't have much to compare to yet So let's ski some more skis and see what we come up with especially Interesting will be how the lighter skis feel on this harder snow You know feel overall Pretty good again given all the culture shock of coming directly from Alpine gear. It's a tough transition That's a weakness of this format would have been better if I had been on my own Touring skis, you know for a day getting into that mindset and then comparing but we have to go with what's available to us and That's the thoughts for now on the Navis freebird

Black Crows Navis Freebird Ski Review (2023) - YouTube

Sorry in advance for the long post. Looking for some help with buying a new setup to use on the resort and in the backcountry. I'm an east coast skier who spends most of my time either in the BC or up at Jay. Next year will be my third year of skiing, but if asked I would categorize my skill level as advanced. I've skied every marked trail and glade at Jay including multiple runs off the ridge and through the chutes. I've also got some decent BC experience, having skied Big Jay for the first time this season, and Tuckerman's a few times over the last two years among the other New England BC skiing I've dabbled in. Currently I'm skiing on a set of Head Rev 85s with Marker Griffons and using daymakers in the BC. I'd like to upgrade to a new resort ski with a hybrid alpine/pin setup to get myself out in the BC more without having to buy two entirely new setups. I have some opinions already and would love some input.

Skis:
I like the skis I have, but I roasted them on a rock last weekend and they were getting near their useful life anyways, plus they're a little narrow. I'm looking for something in the 94-102ish waist width, and I've found that I tend to like a ski that's slightly longer with a little more snap to it so I can kick it around in tight trees. I don't really care about skiing fast on open terrain at all, I'm much more focused on how the skis perform with good snow conditions in tight, steep glades than anything else. So far, I've demo'd the Head Kores, Nordica Enforcers, and the Salomon QST 98s. I hated the enforcers and the heads, I felt like they were bullies that I really couldn't push around at all. Seemed far more suited to crushing groomers at high speeds, not my style. I was a fan of the QSTs once I got used to them, but I felt like the tips were a little bit choppy for my taste in anything other than smooth corduroy or fresh untracked snow. I tend to ski fairly backseat, preferring to sort of swish my tails around to drop speed in the trees rather than digging in my front edges. That said, I do get in over my head sometimes and need to be able to drop speed quickly. Currently my list includes the Line Sick Day 94, Fischer Ranger 102, Salomon QST 98, and the Elan Ripstick 96. Wondering if anyone has any other advice or options.

Bindings:
The eternal debate, I'm looking at a hybrid system, and focusing on the three major players; C.A.S.T., Shifts, Duke PT. Each has their pros and their cons, and throughout my friends I've heard tales of glory and horror stories about all three. Nothing more to add to this one except that I'm excited to hear reddit's collective opinion about these bindings and which one is the best option for someone who wants to tour a lot but needs to hold themselves over with a one-ski quiver for a couple more years.

50/50 resort &amp; backcountry ski/binding combo

 At 102 millimeters underfoot, the Novice likes softer snow, and it's easy to smear around tight terrain thanks to the generous rocker and lightweight construction in the ski. Additionally, for a wider, lighter ski, we are super impressed with the grip and smooth feel it has on edge. Buy the Black Crow's Novice Freebird if you want a touring ski that has some of the same characteristics as a resort ski.

 And top speed is easy to find. But it holds up much better than some other skis on the lighter end of the spectrum. At 102 millimeters underfoot, the Novice likes softer snow, and it's easy to smear around tight terrain thanks to the generous rocker and lightweight construction in the ski. Additionally, for a wider, lighter ski, we are super impressed with the grip and smooth feel it has on edge

 The Black Crow's Novice Freebird is one of the more impressive touring skis out there because of its downhill performance. For a ski around 1,700 grams per ski, it skis quite well. The reason for the better skiability is that the Novice isn't what we would call super light. There's still some real substance underfoot

 You got tetanol, carbon, and fiberglass. On hard snow, the Novice Freebird doesn't perform like a full-blown resort ski. And top speed is easy to find. But it holds up much better than some other skis on the lighter end of the spectrum

Atomic Backlands 107 (175) vs Black Crowes Corvus Freebird 183

 Pretty similar amount of tail rocker as tip rocker, although it is a directional ski. So a little bit less length in the rocker profile in the tail of the ski. This ski is built with Poplar and Polonia and then Black Crows kind of blends carbon fiber into the fiberglass mock-up of the ski, which we've learned through lots of brands is when you do that, you're retaining torsional stiffness and stability and all that good stuff, but taking some weight out. Carbon fiber in a ski construction is lighter than fiberglass, has more to do with just the materials, has a lot to do with all the epoxies and resins that are used, but the gist of it is the ski is lighter

 Today we're talking about the Black Crows Novice Freebird. This is a fantastic alpine touring ski from Black Crows. Very, very well rounded too. You know, the type of ski that can handle firm snow and soft snow

 Love the green graphic. I love the textured top sheet on these too. It might be hard to see, but super durable, will hold up to whatever abuse you're going to put on it in the backcountry. So I love the slogans that they put on the sides of their skis

I am 95kg - 178cm with strong legs (170kg Squat). I am an intermediate skier skiing in Germany/Switzerland. I am 34 years old father of two and don’t have any interest doing any jumps, moguls or weaving through trees. I ski exclusively lift-access frontside. I enjoy going fast.

It must also be said that I need to be able to go SLOW since I am teaching my 3 year old son to ski.

Is there another ski you would recommend?

Skis for heavy skiers

 Black Crows claims versatility with this ski, and they appear to have succeeded. The skis float on powder and hold an edge on hardpack.

 The skis kept up with changing conditions. The shovel kept the tips up in the deep and the camber underfoot keep me feeling stable when things got funky at lower elevations later in the day.

 Stability comes by way of traditional camber underfoot and the sidewall construction. This combination allows excellent handling at speed, on hardpack and funky in conditions. The skis also offer a stiff, early rise tail to make them snappy on the turns. You can feel the stiffness when you engage your turn and roll them on their edge
