 This is their touring application. The Novice Alpine ski went away, but they kept the Freebird version, the touring version of this ski, and it's just a really well-rounded ski for that application. This thing is built with a Poplar and Pallonia blended wood core so that Pallonia takes some weight out of the core, makes it lighter and more approachable for uphill skiing, but it really doesn't sacrifice the downhill performance either, so it's a good blend. You're kind of always looking for that with not a backcountry-specific ski, but this is kind of one of those hybrid skis

 We've got a Black Crow's Novice Freebird for you today.

 The Novice Alpine ski went away, but they kept the Freebird version, the touring version

 of this ski, and it's just a really well-rounded ski for that application.

 This thing is built with a Poplar and Pallonia blended wood core so that Pallonia takes some

 weight out of the core, makes it lighter and more approachable for uphill skiing, but it

 really doesn't sacrifice the downhill performance either, so it's a good blend.

 You're kind of always looking for that with not a backcountry-specific ski, but this is

 We do have a kingpin demo binding on it, and I think it works well with that type of hybrid

 You know, not totally pin-tecked out, but still has that tectouring capability to it.

 Just a little bit beefier of a binding system on it.

 The shape, 102 underfoot, so it's similar to the shape of the Alpine ski that went away,

 and that's, again, in that middle zone for not having too much material for uphill performance

 while still keeping it wide enough to float through powder.

 Generally, the idea is that you're going to get fresh powder if you skin up, so when you're

 skiing down, you do have to have the ski that matches what you have found yourself in.

 This is the 179, generates a 19-meter turn radius.

 You know, it's a little bit on the longer side for a ski this length, so that allows

 you to open it up when you get into those wide open spots.

 Like the Alpine version of the Novice, you know, there's a nice rounded taper shape to

 We found that that really helps it pop up out of the fresh snow, gives you a nice, good

 And then, you know, we had that skin hook in the tail, and a little bit flatter, not

 a ton of taper, not a ton of tail rocker as well.

 So pretty moderate shape from the mid-foot back, but a little bit more progressive, more

 freeride-oriented in the shovel for the shape of this Novice Freebird.

 The skier that's going to want to use this is, you know, that 50-50 skier who's looking

 for, you know, one set of skis that can handle both in- and out-of-bound skiing, probably

 trending towards more backcountry specific, resort touring, applications like that.

 You know, you don't have to be an expert skier because it's a little bit more flexible due

 to the softer wood, so it's not terribly demanding.

 It's just a nice mix of uphill performance, downhill capability.

 So that's the Black Crows Novice Freebird.

 It doesn't feel light to me underfoot and As you'd expect that's making for a pretty good downhill performance pretty good carving ability I have a lot of grip. I feel nice and confident on the hard snow I'm making a very nice GS turn very nice edge to edge On the steeps. I found some nice fluffy soft snow and made some nice quick snappy turns on the soft fluffy snow So for me, um, no complaints on the the free bird um You know, I just don't have much to compare to yet So let's ski some more skis and see what we come up with especially Interesting will be how the lighter skis feel on this harder snow You know feel overall Pretty good again given all the culture shock of coming directly from Alpine gear. It's a tough transition That's a weakness of this format would have been better if I had been on my own Touring skis, you know for a day getting into that mindset and then comparing but we have to go with what's available to us and That's the thoughts for now on the Navis freebird
