 This is their touring application. The Novice Alpine ski went away, but they kept the Freebird version, the touring version of this ski, and it's just a really well-rounded ski for that application. This thing is built with a Poplar and Pallonia blended wood core so that Pallonia takes some weight out of the core, makes it lighter and more approachable for uphill skiing, but it really doesn't sacrifice the downhill performance either, so it's a good blend. You're kind of always looking for that with not a backcountry-specific ski, but this is kind of one of those hybrid skis

 The Black Crow's Novice Freebird is one of the more impressive touring skis out there because of its downhill performance. For a ski around 1,700 grams per ski, it skis quite well. The reason for the better skiability is that the Novice isn't what we would call super light. There's still some real substance underfoot

 You got tetanol, carbon, and fiberglass. On hard snow, the Novice Freebird doesn't perform like a full-blown resort ski. And top speed is easy to find. But it holds up much better than some other skis on the lighter end of the spectrum

 It doesn't feel light to me underfoot and As you'd expect that's making for a pretty good downhill performance pretty good carving ability I have a lot of grip. I feel nice and confident on the hard snow I'm making a very nice GS turn very nice edge to edge On the steeps. I found some nice fluffy soft snow and made some nice quick snappy turns on the soft fluffy snow So for me, um, no complaints on the the free bird um You know, I just don't have much to compare to yet So let's ski some more skis and see what we come up with especially Interesting will be how the lighter skis feel on this harder snow You know feel overall Pretty good again given all the culture shock of coming directly from Alpine gear. It's a tough transition That's a weakness of this format would have been better if I had been on my own Touring skis, you know for a day getting into that mindset and then comparing but we have to go with what's available to us and That's the thoughts for now on the Navis freebird

 Today we're talking about the Black Crows Novice Freebird. This is a fantastic alpine touring ski from Black Crows. Very, very well rounded too. You know, the type of ski that can handle firm snow and soft snow

 Love the green graphic. I love the textured top sheet on these too. It might be hard to see, but super durable, will hold up to whatever abuse you're going to put on it in the backcountry. So I love the slogans that they put on the sides of their skis

The Blizzard Zero G 95 skis are a fantastic choice for backcountry skiers who are looking to maximize their enjoyment in the outdoors. From the first skin track to the last powder 8, the Zero G 95 skis are here to make your life easier and more fun. At 95 mm underfoot, the skis are in that good middle-zone where you can use them in a wide variety of snow conditions and terrain. They're not too wide that they lose some quickness, and they're not too narrow that they'll sink. They have the Goldilocks thing going for them, and for many skiers, this fits their ski style really well. From a construction standpoint, it's pretty impressive how Blizzard makes a ski this light perform so well. Starting with a Paulownia wood core, Blizzard adds pretty much a full layer of carbon to stiffen things up. This is done without the addition of much weight, given the lightness of the carbon fiber material. Further stiffening the ski is the carbon reinforcement in the mounting zone of the skis. This not only increases binding retention, but also makes the ski a strong performer in sharp turns. The longer radius sidecut is great for softer snow as well as uphill skiing. You're able to ride a straight ski, making it easier to get around. For the downhills, the longer radius makes it easier to vary turn shape and style, and is less catchy than a shorter radius ski.

 These things are feather-light, really well suited for very versatile backcountry performance. Not going to spend a whole lot of time riding the lifts on these, certainly meant for more human-powered skiing. As a result, we'd recommend putting a more technical binding on this rather than a hybrid binding like a Shifter, a Duke PT, something with true Pintec and a rotation heel would better suit the weight of this ski. It is a full sidewall underfoot, and then it tapers to cap in the tips and the tails, so from a downhill perspective, that means that it's going to be very maneuverable, which the lightweight already makes it, but it does add that little bit of torsional stiffness underfoot, better edge grip for when conditions get sketchy

But overall, this skier here is going to be on the advanced side of the spectrum, pretty dedicated backcountry tourer, good for going up the resort, up and down, and as well in the woods, 95 underfoot, we're looking at a 22 meter turn radius, so pretty straight cut on these skis, and that's going to be all right for deep snow, soft snow. We definitely get the tip and tail rocker that help with the flotation as well

 It's a full-length carbon laminate, extends all the way to the edges underfoot. There is a binding retention plate in there, and then tapers to the middle and the front as well, so that additional laminate of carbon does stiffen the ski, doesn't add a lot of weight. These things are feather-light, really well suited for very versatile backcountry performance. Not going to spend a whole lot of time riding the lifts on these, certainly meant for more human-powered skiing
