 This is their touring application. The Novice Alpine ski went away, but they kept the Freebird version, the touring version of this ski, and it's just a really well-rounded ski for that application. This thing is built with a Poplar and Pallonia blended wood core so that Pallonia takes some weight out of the core, makes it lighter and more approachable for uphill skiing, but it really doesn't sacrifice the downhill performance either, so it's a good blend. You're kind of always looking for that with not a backcountry-specific ski, but this is kind of one of those hybrid skis

 The Black Crow's Novice Freebird is one of the more impressive touring skis out there because of its downhill performance. For a ski around 1,700 grams per ski, it skis quite well. The reason for the better skiability is that the Novice isn't what we would call super light. There's still some real substance underfoot

 You got tetanol, carbon, and fiberglass. On hard snow, the Novice Freebird doesn't perform like a full-blown resort ski. And top speed is easy to find. But it holds up much better than some other skis on the lighter end of the spectrum

 It doesn't feel light to me underfoot and As you'd expect that's making for a pretty good downhill performance pretty good carving ability I have a lot of grip. I feel nice and confident on the hard snow I'm making a very nice GS turn very nice edge to edge On the steeps. I found some nice fluffy soft snow and made some nice quick snappy turns on the soft fluffy snow So for me, um, no complaints on the the free bird um You know, I just don't have much to compare to yet So let's ski some more skis and see what we come up with especially Interesting will be how the lighter skis feel on this harder snow You know feel overall Pretty good again given all the culture shock of coming directly from Alpine gear. It's a tough transition That's a weakness of this format would have been better if I had been on my own Touring skis, you know for a day getting into that mindset and then comparing but we have to go with what's available to us and That's the thoughts for now on the Navis freebird

 Today we're talking about the Black Crows Novice Freebird. This is a fantastic alpine touring ski from Black Crows. Very, very well rounded too. You know, the type of ski that can handle firm snow and soft snow

 Love the green graphic. I love the textured top sheet on these too. It might be hard to see, but super durable, will hold up to whatever abuse you're going to put on it in the backcountry. So I love the slogans that they put on the sides of their skis

 This is the Salmon Mountain Explore 95 ski, and as the name suggests, it's 95 millimeters under the foot, and it's got 130 in the shovel, so nice and fat for powder, and some early rise, and 116 in the tail, and that's for the 177 length ski. It weighs 1,400 grams per ski, so 2,800 grams per pair, and that again is the 177 length, so it's a really lightweight ski, ideal for ski touring. It comes in a few different sizes, 169, 177, 184 centimeter lengths, and the turn radius ranges from 16.5 meters to 18

 This is the same construction you're going to find on the QBC Labs skis we reviewed last year over here, and also on the Q98s, that review's over here, and the Q105s, that review's over here as well. And this technology basically lightens the tip and tail up for improved swing weight, and it also gives the ski no chatter, virtually no chatter on hard pack and groomer conditions. And I'd have to say Salmon's one of the only ski manufacturers that's really mastered this. These skis just have minimal chatter on hard pack, whereas other skis with this early rise, they chatter all over the place and start skidding out on you, so I'm really a big fan of this honeycomb tip and tail design

 It also uses what Salmon calls the G-Spot technology, and this is basically a combination of sidecut and rocker profile, and places the edge hold directly underfoot, so you've got better edge hold on the groomers and also in skinning uphill. It's got a built-in skin clip in the tail here, as you can see, and in the tips it's got Salmon's honeycomb construction. This is the same construction you're going to find on the QBC Labs skis we reviewed last year over here, and also on the Q98s, that review's over here, and the Q105s, that review's over here as well. And this technology basically lightens the tip and tail up for improved swing weight, and it also gives the ski no chatter, virtually no chatter on hard pack and groomer conditions

 The ski is 1,400 grams so super light for touring but with an alpine binding the thing is going to rip the entire mountain. Honeycomb tip, CFX super fiber to keep it nice and stable and of course full sandwich sidewall underfoot for excellent edge grip. All new for 2015-16 the MTN Explore 95.
