Another consideration is to have a few more dynamic mics on hand for different flavors on guitar amp and drum close-mic duties in addition to the 57s and 421s (md409, m201, RE10/15, and maybe an omni like md21 spring to mind). These are just my suggestions based mostly on my experiences and partly on my personal preferences, but it sounds like you’re going to have a great collection (with no glaring omissions) and are generally making reasonable decisions in terms of mic locker essentials, imo. Having said that, I don’t know if I’d call most mic purchases investments given the current market (my 84s quadrupled in price since I got them, 87s doubled, etc., but that ship has long-since sailed), but they’re still invaluable and necessary tools.

Let me preface this review by saying that I purchased this mic for a very specific application, which it performs wonderfully for - micing nylon string guitar for live performances. I haven’t had the opportunity to fully experiment with it in other settings, but for nylon string guitar it absolutely...

I would recommend a Beyerdynamic M201 - one of the best sounding affordable dynamic mics, has a similar sound to the famous SM7B but with more presence, and it costs 1/3 of the price!

i'd spend the extra cash on better mics. forget the 'cheap kick mic' and '57 clone' and by better mics. some examples in your budget: Beyerdynamic m201, Beyerdynamic m88, Electro Voice RE320, Warm Audio 47jr. If you want to stick to recording yourself then in the long run you will have way more from better mics than an external preamp or other ourboard stuff.

The promo says that this mic is an instrumental mic, but I find it to be more than that. It works beautifully on my vocal and guitar recordings, too. the best overhead mic i own is the beyerdynamic m160, you could also try a beyerdynamic m201 for overhead (or, cheap and vibey: tbone RB500, or similar cheap ribbons). ​. trust me, if you are in for minimal mic setups on drums, the combo m88 on kick + m160 as mono overhead will make you very happy!!!

The M201 is an all around workhorse, and is one of the best studio snare head mics out there, but tough enough for the stage as well.
