 So here it is. This is the Beyerdynamic M201-NC microphone. It's made in West Germany. It's a moving coil dynamic mic and it has a hyper cardio polar pattern

 It's another dynamic microphone that was originally made in the 60s and there's been a few different versions since then. It's a cardioid pickup pattern and it's very widely used. According to RecordingHacks.com, 75% of the recordings in your collection have this microphone used on them

i'd spend the extra cash on better mics. forget the 'cheap kick mic' and '57 clone' and by better mics. some examples in your budget: Beyerdynamic m201, Beyerdynamic m88, Electro Voice RE320, Warm Audio 47jr. If you want to stick to recording yourself then in the long run you will have way more from better mics than an external preamp or other ourboard stuff

I'm recording an EP/Album with my band, where i'm the sound engineer, producer and will do the mixes as well. Seeing as I have all those responsibilities I am also in charge of the shopping list. We have a budget of around 900€ which is around 1000 USD. A part of the budget will be spent on cables and mic stands, we're also buying a headphone amp and 4 pairs of AKG K-52 headphones for monitoring while recording/rehearsing. I'm also buying a palmer re amp box in case it's needed and I already have a pair of AKG P120's (which i plan on using as overheads) a 58, a pair of pencils, 57 clone, a real 57 and an Studio Projects C1 mic, we're also buying another 57 clone a Shure 57 beta A and a cheap kick mic. We have +/- 500€ left in our budget and i honestly can't decide on what to do with it. A part of me thinks that it'd be great to have a switchable pattern condenser like a Rode NT2a and a cheap ribbon microphone, or if I should keep it simple and buy a tube pre amp like a ART MPA II or a SPL Gold Mike with the remainder of the budget. I don't know if those 500€ spent on the pre amp will make that big of a difference (that I cant emulate with good pre amp plugins) or if I should just buy more mics and have more diversity.

To Pre or not to Pre

 Tight and focused without being too dominant. Midrange is really the sweet spot for electric guitar tones, but with nylon string it has to be a seamless blend. The Beyer manages to provide just that, so I really can’t speak highly enough of this microphone.  As stated previously, I haven’t had the opportunity to really mess around with it on steel-string acoustic or electric guitar, but I’m sure it would perform just as well if you take the time to dial it in

 I’ve had to run my Bose practically wide open just to get the guitar audible. With a steel string acoustic it’d be clipping and feeding back all over the place, but the nylon string is a totally different animal. I’m sharing all this information just to underline what a specific task I’ve given the Beyer, and to explain how amazingly it’s performed at it.  The Beyerdynamic M201 TG was recommended to me by an engineer at a very high end classical guitar dealer, and it has absolutely solved all these problems for me

Not only can it handle an obscene amount of gain without humming or feeding back, it does so with a beautifully rich expressive sensitivity. For classical and Spanish guitar you have to be really careful with low end frequencies, and the Beyer has managed to keep them full and well-rounded even at lower settings

I know there are some guys out there who do not like the Beta mics, they think they sound kind of too modern or sheeny, or they just don't like the frequency response, and they may prefer an Audix or something like that, a Heil, there's a lot of other great, you know, drum mic companies out there, but whatever you guys thoughts may be, definitely stick in the comments down below.  It doesn't come with any other mics, or stands, or cables, or anything like that, that you might get in these packages. So I see a lot of guys, you know, they go out, they buy, you know, a hundred and fifty dollar, you know, drum mic package from Digital Reference or whatever, they take it home and they try to use, and they go, well, it sounds okay, but I'm looking for something more. This is what you're looking for, at least in the world of kick drum mics. The other thing that I wanted to talk about a little bit is just why I think that this mic is one of the most brilliantly designed mics for this purpose

 The Beta 52 is a dynamic mic, but they've designed the diaphragm of this mic to work two things really, really well. First is low frequencies, so it's a really big diaphragm in there, it's gonna handle low frequencies really, really well, especially really low transients, like a kick drum, that is, after all, what it's designed for. And also, you know, it's convenient that it doesn't require phantom or anything like that, you can just plug it in and go, but it also is designed to handle very high SPL, sound pressure level, so you can put it right in front of a kick drum, right in front of a big bass amp, something like that, and not have to worry about it ever clipping or distorting. That is the first and kind of biggest point that you're gonna get with something like this, that you're not gonna get from one of these cheaper drum mic packages, is that SPL level

Shure Beta 52A Kick Drum Mic Review - Practical Edition

 The onstage MS9411TB is a very heavy stable boom stand. That will handle a mic like this well. Last thing you will want is a good mic on a cheap stand. Mic + impact = bad news!

 The sound quality is excellent for this price point. It’s somewhat subjective as well but if this is your first jump into this market of live and recorded sound it’s a good place to start. Does better than this exist? Of course from Shure and others but you’ll definitely pay for it. The fact that this has a preset on Yamaha TF series mixers makes it easy to get started setting up

 (Kinda handy since fitting your hand inside to adjust isn’t easy). If you are using it outside the drum you can easily change angles and tighten the screw to save whatever angle you wish. The sound quality is excellent for this price point. It’s somewhat subjective as well but if this is your first jump into this market of live and recorded sound it’s a good place to start
