ARLO Q HD Video Security Camera: 2021 Update

 In theory it arms the motion-detection when you leave your home area (configurable via menu), and disarms it when you return (based on your phone's GPS). But this was also pretty buggy for me. I would be sitting at home, not 5 feet from the camera, and I would get a notification that it had armed because I left my home. Then of course I would start getting motion detection alerts because I was at home

 But it would still arm while I was at home sometimes due to WiFi issues. Luckily with IFTT I was able to set up a couple widgets on my phone's home screen to arm/disarm, so I don't actually have to open the Arlo app every time I enter or leave my house. This is a step in the right direction, but it doesn't always work perfectly either. This is not the kind of product where you just "hope" it works, you need to know, every time, that it works and that when you leave you home, it is armed and ready to go

 Note that I couldn't get it to log in to my hidden WiFi network (I don't broadcast my SSID), so I did have to pair it with a guest network that is not hidden. The tech support person couldn't tell me if Arlo works with hidden networks, they didn't seem to understand what a hidden WiFi network was (really, Netgear? Isn't your whole business essentially built around networks and WiFi?).  If Netgear could make some reliability improvements to this thing, especially the app, I think it could be quite an amazing product. I know Netgear reads some of these

One thing to note, while Netgear says you get a week of free storage, remember that doesn't mean you have 7 days of footage on their servers

 I mean I setup a small area & still get false triggers for motion in other areas. I found if I move the area around I could get it to work for a different area.. It's as if the area SHOWN doesn't match what it SEES

 I was mostly right. For starters I had a hard time justifying the price for a pair of these compared to other IP cams (as in literally 100's to choose) but I wanted a reliable, simple to setup & use end-to-end top-to-bottom all-in-one PNP KIT. This kit DOES fit all those things. It was dead simple to setup & my IT skills were not needed in any way shape or form

I thought it was some kind of game

 It's actually a very nice feature (if it works, I haven't actually tried it yet) whereby the camera "arms" (will send email notifications when sensing motion), when your mobile phone is not nearby or in the house. This is a relatively new feature (the app says "beta") but seeming essential. I don't know if other brands have this feature, but from the user reviews of the Arlo-Q they imply this is the only one that does, at least in this price range. If you don't have this feature, you are stuck either arming the motion sensor manually via mobile app, or by a schedule

EDIT (12/11/2016): Nest Update - I have had the nest cameras for nearly 2 weeks. While they haven't been perfect, I'm much happier with their reliability and performance. I don't have to worry about missing important moments or having artifacts in the video. It's also worth noting that both nest cameras were farther away from the wireless router than the Arlo cameras and still performed better

  I have started typing up this review multiple times over the last few months and never submitted because I wanted to be confident that I had done everything in my power to make the service work. Well, it just doesn't. So here goes.

.  Pros: - Nice web/mobile interface - Easy to install/setup  Cons: - UNRELIABLE! Works maybe 1/4 of the time. Maybe! At any given time, one or more feature just won't work (live video and/or audio, CVR cloud video and/or audio). - Constantly have no video and/or audio on live view (tested multiple browsers and mobile devices) - Constantly have no video and/or audio on (CVR) recorded video  I would say that more often than not, I will have either no video, no audio, or neither when I use the browser or mobile app

 Again, tried from multiple browsers (Chrome, Firefox) and from mobile devices.  What is the point of a security system if it isn't reliable? Again, resetting helps for some amount of time, but WHAT'S THE POINT if you missed an important event (like someone breaking in!)?  I purchased Arlo because of the glowing reviews, but I've had nothing but trouble. I will be giving NEST a try.  For now, I'm outside of my warranty period and stuck with four hundred dollars worth of paperweights and a subscription that I can hopefully get a pro-rated refund for
