My third bag, before the GR2-26l, was an Arktype Dashpack Mark II. 15L but much much smaller than my Rucker 3.0 20L- closer to an 8L bag my wife uses occasionally with just her iPad. The Dashpack used to be my choice for running an errand or two with just my iPad Pro and maybe a book. The problem was, it seemed like I often wished I had a little more- one of my laptops or a phone charger or something.

What are some bags that surprised you in a good way?
Arktype Dashpack. It's a bit pricey for the size but it is a perfect dad bag when I go out with my kids. It has 2 water bottle pockets & just enough space for what I edc + whatever else I want to take, like snacks. Plus it is ballistic Nylon.
Does this bag not exist?
Arktype Dashpack is 14L but fits your description.
I go back and forth between that and a Thule bag for my EDC.
edit: never mind. Not a full clamshell

EDC for Big and Tall
A tall 15l pack is really tough to find. Most of the 15l packs on the market are breadboxes, and look like toys on a back of a long-torso individual.
Try an Arktype Dashpack. It meets most of your specs.
Smallest backpacks that fit a 16" MBP?
Arktype Dashpack. I’m considering it for myself to carry two laptops in a minimal setup. I think it’s also the least deep at 4.5”. I have seen a few even slimmer at stores here in Japan, but they aren’t much more than a laptop sleeve with straps.
Arktype - Dashpack - The Perfect Pack
It’s so small and easy to just grab why wouldn’t I? The Arktype Dashpack is a great minimalist pack and I am quite certain that I will continue to carry it on and off for years to come. Currently the black Dashpack is sold out but I have been informed stock will be in about a week.

A New Everyday Carry Pack From Aer - The Aer City Pack
The Dashpack is pretty well suited for pouches though, at least thin ones. Internal organization goes to the AER for those that prefer it, and the lighter interior definitely helps. The water pocket looks nice, but I can't tell if it actually holds more.
