Long time lurker here, and 20 years in the network industry supporting firewalls etc, so I'm not a total noob. At one point, some 15 years ago, I had everything you guys post about here, a rack, patch panels, servers, complicated networking with VLANs and even a Palo Alto Virtual FW in the mix to secure it all. 

Maybe I'm just too old now, but I've out grown the need for that much complication in my life. I had great success at my old house with just a simple Netgear Orbi as it does most of what I need (once I cut out the vlan segmentation). 

BUT, I'm buying a new house and starting to think about what I'd want, which leads me to my original question: Why do you guys all seem to have such a hard on for Ubiquiti? I see lots of talk on here about POE and custom purpose Wireless APs etc. I'm just curious what use cases you guys have that justify all the complications. I hope it doesn't come across as rude or judgy, just genuine curiosity on why you guys go this route vs something like a TP-Link Deco setup (which is what I'm currently looking at). 

I really just need a router than can do basic port forwarding, guest wi-fi, and decent DHCP support. All of my vlan stuff is on a dedicated VM server, so I keep my house stuff pretty simple. IOT/smart devices go on the guest wi-fi, and I use the regular wi-fi for my own personal stuff. Most modern wifi routers allow you to segregate the two just fine. 

So, why would I want to invest what I assume is $1,000+ into Ubiquity or other 'prosumer' devices?

Why do you guys love Ubiquiti so much?

4 Gbps in the 5 GHz range. So if we take the averages of all of these scores and we put all of these access points up against each other to see the crosstalk benchmark score, it should be no surprise that the U6LR is now our new reigning access point champion with just over 400 megabits average between all of these different tests. And it's, you know, 50 megabits faster than the next closest competitor, which is really, really great. One final metric is the bang for your buck, right? This is $179 versus the, you know, U6 Lite at $99

 So by 15 cents per megabit, the Nano HD comes in at 60 cents per megabit. The U6LR comes in at 45 cents per megabit. So again, not the most scientific testing, but what is scientific about this testing is that I tested all of these access points in literally exactly the same way. So even if my testing isn't perfectly sound, the results should be sound when compared to all of the other access points that I've tested here

U6-LR Review and Benchmarks

 We don't want to know how this performs at one location. How does a bunch of these perform at a bunch of different locations? What were the challenges? What were some of the problems you run into? And because of the limited availability, I've kind of avoided doing some in-depth reviews on any of the Wi-Fi 6. So I wanted to make this video to one, kind of mention that. And two, yes, we have been testing them though, but I'm not going to dive into speed tests

 So you kinda gotta buy one and maybe if you have to buy one more or even still put a couple of those less expensive outdoor access points outside, which I thought I was gonna have to do and didn't, but they should roam fine between them using these devices right here.  Chris from Crosstalk Solutions, I'll leave a link to his video down below, did a series of speed tests on these devices. Now they're fast and they're Wi-Fi 6. One of the problems though, and we've done a lot of testing internally, I just don't bother publishing it because the numbers don't give a lot of meaning. Now, if you've not at all heard of Unifi before right now and you're just looking for a good Wifi 6 device, please be warned, you do need to run to get the most out of these, the Unifi Software Defined Networking Controller, which you can host yourself or buy a Unifi CloudKey or run a Unifi Dream Machine to connect to these

Ubiquiti Unifi U6-LR Quick Review

 Unfortunately we're going to skip the adoption and configuration of the new access point if you guys want to see that I would highly recommend checking out another youtuber's channel that will totally walk you through that process in a much better way than I probably ever will but nonetheless we are going to look at speed tests. Now the AC Pro is much further away it is in the living room behind the TV and it has a lot of walls that needs to penetrate in order to provide Wi-Fi access to this room and we'll be using the Mac Mini to do these speed tests. Now the AC Pro still manages to pull off a pretty respectable download speed of 200 megabits per second and delivers a whopping 220 megabits per second during upload transfers which is actually really good. Now obviously the long range access points can do much better because it's much closer but it does manage to give us a very nice download speed of 360 megabits per second and a very nice upload speed of 350 megabits per second

 We got our ethernet cable run and installed here in the patch panel so we're just going to use the signature blue cable to identify that this is power over ethernet and we're going to just plug it in here and once we get the access point installed that should light up so it's time to do the access point stuff. All right so if we did this all correctly it should line up almost immediately and also have data but that's not something we're going to know until after we get hooked up and it lit up so that's one good sign let's get this thing mounted and configured and that looks pretty lined up to me it's definitely a little wider but yeah it's going to look good up there.  Ubiquity is an expensive option but you get what you pay for. Powerful full coverage of you area. Just remember they put out what you put in. They do not magically increase network speed

Great Product

 They completely ignored all of the data we had logged to prove repeatability of the issue.  If you have a guest network configured and have been using older Unifi APs without issue, then you want to swap those older APs out with these Unifi 6 Long Ranges, there will be no indication in the management interface that all your guests now have access to your internal domain, servers, etc.  Ubiquiti is completely ignoring this issue as well as the issue with their "New UI" that you cannot even access the advanced wifi settings on because it brings you to an error page "Unifi is having trouble with this direction".  Wiped controller to factory defaults several times, spent many hours troubleshooting this and what you've just read is our findings

 They push firmware to your devices even when automatic updates are disabled. Turning off the sending analytics to Unifi doesn't actually disable it, it just makes you think it's disabled so you won't complain. Go read the forums and watch the youtube videos. Unifi has lost their way and should be avoided on anything other than a test network

Buyer Beware

 Then I had to click to update the firmware which it downloaded and installed, then reprovisioned itself. Done. One tip I would give anyone looking to buy a Ubiquity WAP. You don't have to wait for your WAP to arrive, I installed the software on my home server and configured my home wireless on it while I was waiting for the first WAP to arrive

 That was the hard part. In the setup website, I had to 'adopt' it, then wait for a short time while it provisioned. Then I had to click to update the firmware which it downloaded and installed, then reprovisioned itself. Done

 UPDATE- it's been 5 months, and my to UNIFI WAPs, (this, and an AC PRO) have been working flawlessly. I ended up ordering a couple of Intel based PCI NICs for a couple of my computers so they can take advantage of AC (I've been using N since before AC existed and these are my first AC WAPs) and I have good coverage.

 Please don't fault the device for this and give a bad review because you didn't know something. I even read one review where the person was expecting to directly setup the device, he was looking for it's IP to log into it so he gave a negative review because HE didn't know how these work. The beauty here is a single point of control for ALL the WAPs, and Ubiquity's other devices if you use those. Adding this second WAP was as easy as breathing as the wireless was already setup

Easy Peasy Speedy and setup is cake

 Alright so there's only really two ports on this thing, we have the ethernet, this is a gigabit ethernet port, and then there's also a reset button for resetting it to factory defaults if you ever need to do that. Now this is a really powerful access point in quite a small form factor, so this is 802.11ac Wave 2 4x4 multi-user MIMO in the 5 GHz spectrum, or basically about 1.7 gigabits per second of throughput in the 5 GHz spectrum

 We're gonna click on that and we're gonna click adopt. There we go. Adopted, now provisioning. That was actually really quick

 So this is the wall mount and the pole mount. So what you have here is a little device that sort of allows you to slip this on like so. So this goes on the wall or on the pole and then this goes like so, slips right onto that secondary, slips right onto that secondary piece like so. And there you have your wall mounting or pole mounting

UniFi FlexHD

 Primary services first floor office and second floor above I have a pro on low. Performed site survey with NetSpot Pro and used Android Wifi Analysis app. I turned off power to all AP's except Flex HD and wall penetration is low which isn't consistent with transmission and antenna gains. The pro should not have superior coverage, but it does in my testing

 I have a pro in the living room. The pro services many more clients and rock solid performance. The Flex HD is on medium 5ghz vht 80 and low 2.4 40

 I noticed a good 30%-35% drop in 2.4GHz range, and a smaller but still definitely noticeable drop in 5GHz range. UBNT says they designed this AP to perform better on 5GHz than 2.4

 Wow so 10 megabytes per second on the download, 4.4 megabytes on the upload. That's not bad for being out here in the middle of the garden. All right man this is the true test
