TWSBI ECO Black vs Lamy Joy

Personally, I like the TWSBI eco for its large ink capacity and comfort. It has a good weight to it and there are beautiful colors! :)

I need a good pen that is always ready for taking immediate notes, when we have problems or issues at the observatory... 1) The ink cartridges for this pen (both "pre-packaged" & refillable styles), have only small capacity- I run out of ink within a few pages of notes, usually within less than a full day of work

It uses cartridges, but doesn’t come with a converter. The TWSBI Eco is a great pen that may be more than you are thinking of spending ($30) but is a really nice pen that could be a buy it once and done. It is only bottle fill, and that adds about $10 for ink, but the pen is great and hold a lot of ink. Depending on your use this can be a factor

The nib is decent, I suppose for the price. The 1.1 italic nib gives me exactly what I was looking for whereas the fine nib on the Safari was a big disappointment. The 1

Now writing with this pen is where I have my problems. I compared it to the Lamy Safari and Metropolitan Pilot which are both cheaper than the TWSBI ECO and both write several orders of magnitude smoother than the TWSBI ECO. This pen is incredibly scratchy and this was directly comparing to the other 2 pens with 2 different inks. Carbon Ink Black and Waterman Serenity Blue

I find the nibs on these pens need a lot of working-in before the ink has a consistent flow. I was also using high quality papers to practice on. I have been a calligraphy practitioner for 40 years and I was really disappointed with the inconsistent flow of ink from the nibs which affects the thickness / width of the lettering intermittently, resulting in a poor overall appearance of gothic, italic and uncial scripts. UPDATE March 2019: After over a year of using this pen, I'm my review from 4 to 5 stars. Ink flow is very smooth, and even the slight feedback this extra-fine nib had while writing/sketching is pretty much smoothed out as well. This plastic body is built like a tank; threw it around in all my bags along with keys and phones and everything and there's not a single scratch on it. The massive ink reservoir is also really, really handy for travel and on the go, as I hardly ever have to refill, and the clear body makes it incredibly easy to see when the ink is getting low

We have a LAMY Safari and got this because of videos and reviews on line but when we received it seemed cheaply made. Plastic seemed cheap, the red piece at the end of the pen looked very cheaply made and everything about it looked like a mass produced toy. We did not even ink it up and test it but found that it had previously been inked by someone else, there was a blue tinge to the feed mechanism. So happy that returns are so extremely easy with Amazon which is all the more reason to get things through Amazon Prime

I really really enjoy writing with this pen. I got a Pilot Metropolitan last year so when I initially picked this one up, I was a little put off by how light it felt in comparison. but after a few weeks of using it I'm super happy with the weight difference - this one really glides across the page (in a Clairefontaine notebook) and it's really nice to be able to switch between a lighter pen and a weightier one. it is also of course very cool & useful to see how much ink is left in the pen

I love the thinness of my Lamy CP1, but it's a bit heavy even at just 17g. I love the look of it posted, but it throws my handwriting off because of the extra weight on the end. My Lamy Joy and Safari are super light at about 11g each (I bought them for this reason) but the shafts are still quite thick; even with the ergonomic grip they aren't super comfortable for pages of writing.

This pen (TWSBI ECO) is fantastic! Easy to fill, easy to clean, nice plastic case with included tool, liquid silicone sealer and pictured instructions on pen care. Overall thrilled with this purchase and would purchase another in a minute. Highly recommended.

This and the 1.5mm pen are fantastic pieces to get into writing and calligraphy with fountain pens. Durable, reasonably priced, and a simple yet ergonomic design make it a breeze to write with, whether you're re-learning penmanship or just fiddling around with new lettering with an italic nib.
