I use Ubiquiti at my house and I love it, but I'm trying to get a family member squared away who has somewhat involved requirements (a house and detached garage outside mesh range) and I don't think Ubiquiti is in their budget.  That said, I'll probably be the one supporting this so having something bulletproof with unified management is important to me.  Are there some cost-effective options out there that support a centralized router/switch/configuration and attaching some wifi extenders/AP's via CAT6 that don't require discrete configuration?

Alternatives to Ubiquiti for all-in-one management?

I just did a tp-link er605 + tl-sg2210MP + eap620hd + eap225 outdoor + eap235-wall + OC200 setup and it was super simple and the performance is great. I have never used ubiquiti but they are more expensive. Make sure the feature set of the equipment meets what you truly need.

I finally got gigabit speeds and think it's time to upgrade the rest of my equipment.

I setup a LAN network using goCoax MoCA 2.5 adapters and am pretty happy with it. I'm now looking to upgrade my router to get the most out of my LAN and provide better wi-fi coverage.

What's the recommended setup for $300 for a fast LAN with wi-fi coverage.

This package contains the latest firmware updates for the EAP devices, and also detects and launches the web interface for you to manage multiple EAPs and the clients connected to them. This interface allows you to make global changes with just a few clicks, even with EAPs deployed in different locations.

Within the context of 2x2 MIMO, the speed of this equipment is good and the range covered would work well for recreational areas or outdoor dining.

For assessments, we decided on line-of-sight tests using an Ultrabook and an Android smartphone, both with 802.11ac Wi-Fi connections. At less than 100 feet, we experienced 433Mbps connections reliably, and that only dropped at 200 feet to 250Mbps.

Pay CLOSE attention to this unit, how it works, and what it does before you buy it!!  1) Omada interface / controller - as normal, great concept but total trash to implement. I de-registered the software, wiped the initial setup and started over rather than trying to mess with it (its only good for multipoint administration from a central location IMHO) - IE: I did the stand alone fallback mode through a web interface and fixed the problem (much simpler setup) 2) NOT a true "wireless mesh" unit. 4 would have been a little stronger at this distance, let's go back to 5, not bad, the room as I said is about 130 feet, which is about 40 meters, I'll actually be setting this up in a marina, which is going to be all outside, but the marina is in the downtown core, so the marina, try that again, 2.5, sorry, 5 GHz and 2.4, a tad stronger, marina is outside, we are going to be setting this up, but it's in the downtown core, so there's lots of Wi-Fi interference, but what I'll do is I'll do another video on the outdoor test of the TP-Link EAP225 outdoor, thanks and I hope this helps, okay, so to be fair I figured I'd give this TP-Link EAP225 outdoor a proper outdoor test, so I've got it temporarily powered up with no ethernet, but Wi-Fi is functioning, as you can see I'm connected here on the 5, can you see that, on the 5 GHz frequency, full strength obviously because I'm 6 inches away from it, I've got my step counter running on the same screen and we're going to go for a walk through this park and see how far we get, the step counter is a little delayed, it'll catch up, it's counting in meters, we're going to go to the end of the park and see how far we get, the last test was inside, wow, a little delayed reaction there, so 50 meters we're down to half there, let's switch it up to 2.4, 48 meters, I guess it's pretty good if you think about it, 48 meters, well it is what it is, I'm not sure how that relates to anything because I haven't spent a lot of time testing outdoor access points, and also have to keep in mind that I'm using a phone for the testing and the antenna in this phone is much smaller than the antennas you'll find in a laptop, seems to also make a difference based on which way I'm facing, 2

TP Link EAP225 Outdoor: Unboxing, firmware tour and range testing

 The ReoLink cameras support 5G and 2.4G WiFi (not simultaneously), but yet again, the signal continues to disappoint.  This is still a pretty cool product, and it has applications (especially related to affordable outdoor mesh), but it certainly didn't accomplish what I was hoping it would.

Long time lurker here, and 20 years in the network industry supporting firewalls etc, so I'm not a total noob. At one point, some 15 years ago, I had everything you guys post about here, a rack, patch panels, servers, complicated networking with VLANs and even a Palo Alto Virtual FW in the mix to secure it all. 

Maybe I'm just too old now, but I've out grown the need for that much complication in my life. I had great success at my old house with just a simple Netgear Orbi as it does most of what I need (once I cut out the vlan segmentation). 

BUT, I'm buying a new house and starting to think about what I'd want, which leads me to my original question: Why do you guys all seem to have such a hard on for Ubiquiti? I see lots of talk on here about POE and custom purpose Wireless APs etc. I'm just curious what use cases you guys have that justify all the complications. I hope it doesn't come across as rude or judgy, just genuine curiosity on why you guys go this route vs something like a TP-Link Deco setup (which is what I'm currently looking at). 

I really just need a router than can do basic port forwarding, guest wi-fi, and decent DHCP support. All of my vlan stuff is on a dedicated VM server, so I keep my house stuff pretty simple. IOT/smart devices go on the guest wi-fi, and I use the regular wi-fi for my own personal stuff. Most modern wifi routers allow you to segregate the two just fine. 

So, why would I want to invest what I assume is $1,000+ into Ubiquity or other 'prosumer' devices?

Why do you guys love Ubiquiti so much?

4 Gbps in the 5 GHz range. So if we take the averages of all of these scores and we put all of these access points up against each other to see the crosstalk benchmark score, it should be no surprise that the U6LR is now our new reigning access point champion with just over 400 megabits average between all of these different tests. And it's, you know, 50 megabits faster than the next closest competitor, which is really, really great. One final metric is the bang for your buck, right? This is $179 versus the, you know, U6 Lite at $99

 So by 15 cents per megabit, the Nano HD comes in at 60 cents per megabit. The U6LR comes in at 45 cents per megabit. So again, not the most scientific testing, but what is scientific about this testing is that I tested all of these access points in literally exactly the same way. So even if my testing isn't perfectly sound, the results should be sound when compared to all of the other access points that I've tested here

U6-LR Review and Benchmarks

 We don't want to know how this performs at one location. How does a bunch of these perform at a bunch of different locations? What were the challenges? What were some of the problems you run into? And because of the limited availability, I've kind of avoided doing some in-depth reviews on any of the Wi-Fi 6. So I wanted to make this video to one, kind of mention that. And two, yes, we have been testing them though, but I'm not going to dive into speed tests

 So you kinda gotta buy one and maybe if you have to buy one more or even still put a couple of those less expensive outdoor access points outside, which I thought I was gonna have to do and didn't, but they should roam fine between them using these devices right here. One of the problems though, and we've done a lot of testing internally, I just don't bother publishing it because the numbers don't give a lot of meaning. Now, if you've not at all heard of Unifi before right now and you're just looking for a good Wifi 6 device, please be warned, you do need to run to get the most out of these, the Unifi Software Defined Networking Controller, which you can host yourself or buy a Unifi CloudKey or run a Unifi Dream Machine to connect to these

Ubiquiti Unifi U6-LR Quick Review

 Unfortunately we're going to skip the adoption and configuration of the new access point if you guys want to see that I would highly recommend checking out another youtuber's channel that will totally walk you through that process in a much better way than I probably ever will but nonetheless we are going to look at speed tests. Now the AC Pro is much further away it is in the living room behind the TV and it has a lot of walls that needs to penetrate in order to provide Wi-Fi access to this room and we'll be using the Mac Mini to do these speed tests. Now the AC Pro still manages to pull off a pretty respectable download speed of 200 megabits per second and delivers a whopping 220 megabits per second during upload transfers which is actually really good. Now obviously the long range access points can do much better because it's much closer but it does manage to give us a very nice download speed of 360 megabits per second and a very nice upload speed of 350 megabits per second

 We got our ethernet cable run and installed here in the patch panel so we're just going to use the signature blue cable to identify that this is power over ethernet and we're going to just plug it in here and once we get the access point installed that should light up so it's time to do the access point stuff. All right so if we did this all correctly it should line up almost immediately and also have data but that's not something we're going to know until after we get hooked up and it lit up so that's one good sign let's get this thing mounted and configured and that looks pretty lined up to me it's definitely a little wider but yeah it's going to look good up there.  Ubiquity is an expensive option but you get what you pay for. Powerful full coverage of you area. Just remember they put out what you put in. They do not magically increase network speed

Great Product

 They completely ignored all of the data we had logged to prove repeatability of the issue.  If you have a guest network configured and have been using older Unifi APs without issue, then you want to swap those older APs out with these Unifi 6 Long Ranges, there will be no indication in the management interface that all your guests now have access to your internal domain, servers, etc.  Ubiquiti is completely ignoring this issue as well as the issue with their "New UI" that you cannot even access the advanced wifi settings on because it brings you to an error page "Unifi is having trouble with this direction".
