The best cheap 4k HDR TV we've tested is the TCL 4 Series/S455 2022. Unfortunately, as it's a cheap TV, it can't deliver a true HDR experience as it has low peak brightness in HDR, a limited color gamut, and no local dimming feature to bring out bright areas of the screen. Overall, don't expect HDR to look much different from SDR on any TV in this price range. That's not to say that HDR looks bad, though. It has a fantastic contrast ratio, so there's some difference between bright and dark areas of the screen, and it's bright enough that some highlights stand out if you're in a completely dark room.

On the other hand, it has surprisingly good processing for a cheap TV. Gradients are displayed well, so fine details in uniform shots, like sunsets, are displayed well, with very little banding. It also displays shadow details well, as most content is displayed close to the content creator's intent. It doesn't support any advanced HDR formats like Dolby Vision or HDR10+, but since HDR adds little overall, it isn't an issue.

If you want something cheaper, go with the TCL 4 Series/S455 2022. It's a decent entry-level 4k TV that delivers decent picture quality overall, but it has a much more limited set of features compared to the more expensive options on this list. It has a fantastic native contrast ratio, resulting in deep blacks and bright highlights when watching movies or gaming in the dark, but it lacks a local dimming feature to further improve contrast.

It's also a decent gaming option, with fantastic low input lag and a decent response time, but you'll see more ghosting behind fast-moving objects compared to the Hisense U6GR or the TCL 6 Series/R635 2020 QLED. It can't take full advantage of the Xbox Series S|X or PS5, though, as it's limited to a 60Hz refresh rate and doesn't support a variable refresh rate. It has a similar selection of smart features to the higher-end models, though, with the same great Roku OS smart interface, and it supports voice control through the companion app.

Another budget-friendly brand, TCL is a relatively new company in the TV market as they started selling TVs in the United States in 2014. Before that, they started as a Chinese electronics company in the 1980s, and they've since expanded into making different consumer electronics, from smartphones to soundbars. For many years TCL TVs were known for their Roku TV smart platform. Unlike LG and Samsung, TCL doesn't use a proprietary platform and instead uses either Roku TV or Google TV, depending on the model. Both options have a great selection of streaming apps, but the Google TV platform offers a more polished interface, while some people find that Roku is easier to use. Even though most of their 2020 models included Roku, their 2021 lineup focused on Google TV, and they continued producing their 2020 TVs, so this means that you can choose whichever platform you prefer the most.

Considering their TVs don't cost a lot, they compete with other budget-friendly brands like Hisense and Vizio. TCL offers a wide range of TVs, including small 720p and 1080p models, which are rare now and are great if you need a simple TV for a small room or a kitchen. Their mid-range TCL 5 Series/S546 2021 QLED and high-end TCL 6 Series/R646 2021 QLED use Mini LED backlighting, which provides finer control of the local dimming zones and higher peak brightness, but even on the R646, their local dimming implementation is only decent. This means that TCL is still behind other brands for dark room performance. They release a wider range of models internationally, and like Hisense, their U.S. models aren't available in other regions.

The TCL 6 Series/R646 2021 QLED is the best sounding TV with an LED panel that we've tested. Having an LED TV is good if you're worried about the burn-in risk associated with OLEDs, so you can constantly watch your favorite news or sports channel and not worry about damaging the screen. It has a decent frequency response with a well-balanced sound profile that delivers clear dialogue. It gets very loud, with very little distortion, even at max volume.

If you're planning on using an external soundbar or home theater system, it supports eARC audio passthrough and all major formats, including DTS, meaning you can get the best sound possible from any external source. Looking at the picture quality, it performs well in dark and bright environments because it gets bright enough to fight glare from bright sources and displays deep blacks in dark rooms. It has a Mini LED local dimming feature, but it doesn't seem that effective at improving the picture quality in dark scenes.

Unfortunately, it's not a good choice to watch DVDs because it has trouble upscaling 480p content properly. Still, it doesn't have any issues with content from cable boxes, Blu-rays, or native 4k content, which is great. It also has narrow viewing angles, so the image looks washed out from the sides. Overall, it's the best sounding TV in the LED category that we've tested.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money on the best of the best or if your room doesn't have direct sunlight, it's better to go for a mid-range model that's cheaper and performs well in bright rooms. If that's what you're looking for, the TCL 6 Series/R646 2021 QLED is the best TV for bright room viewing in the mid-range category we've tested. Like the Hisense U8H, it has Mini LED backlighting, and although it doesn't get as bright with some scenes, the peak brightness is still fantastic, and the reflection handling is excellent.

This TV has good out-of-the-box accuracy, so you won't need to get it calibrated unless you need perfect colors, and it also displays a wide range of colors. It's a good choice for watching HD cable channels, Blu-rays, and native 4k content because it displays them without issues, but it has some problems with 480p content, like from DVDs. If you watch a lot of DVDs, the Hisense U8H is a better choice.

If you want to future-proof your next TV, the TCL 6 Series/R648 2021 8k QLED is the best 8k Roku TV we've tested. It's a great TV with excellent contrast and a decent full array local dimming feature, resulting in deep blacks in a dark room. The high peak brightness helps it deliver an impressive HDR experience overall, as bright highlights stand out well from the background. It also respects the content creator's intent well, as it follows the PQ EOTF well and has great tone mapping in HDR. It has an excellent wide color gamut and good color volume, so HDR content looks incredibly vivid and lifelike.

It's an excellent gaming monitor with a quick response time and low input lag, so your games feel responsive, and they look great, with very little ghosting behind fast-moving objects. It has a good selection of gaming features, including variable refresh rate support and HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, allowing for 4k @ 120Hz gaming with the Xbox Series S|X and the PS5. Unfortunately, though, there's very little 8k content available, so almost everything you watch will be upscaled, so the overall picture quality is a bit worse than the TCL 6 Series/R635 2020 QLED, especially if you're watching cable TV or older content on DVDs.

The best TCL TV we've tested is the TCL 6 Series/R646 2021 QLED. It's a great TV with a fantastic native contrast ratio, resulting in deep, uniform blacks that look great in a dark room. It features Mini LED backlighting, allowing for tighter control of the local dimming zones, resulting in less haloing around bright objects in dark scenes than traditional LED backlights. Bright highlights stand out, and thanks to its great HDR color gamut, colors look vivid. It also supports all three main HDR formats, HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision, so you don't have to worry about compatibility with your favorite streaming service.

The TCL 6 Series/R646 2021 QLED is the best-sounding mid-range TV we've tested. It's a great overall TV available in a few different sizes, from 55 to 75 inches, and it combines its great picture quality with good sound quality. It has a decent frequency response with a well-balanced sound profile that delivers clear dialogue, which is great for watching the news or TV shows. It also gets very loud as it's one of the lowest TVs we've tested, with very little distortion, even at max volume. It delivers similar overall sound quality to the Sony X95K but has slightly worse picture quality, as it's not as bright as the Sony and has a narrow viewing angle. The best mid-range 8k TV we've tested is the TCL 6 Series/R648 2021 8k QLED. It's not quite as bright as the Samsung QN800A 8k QLED, but it still delivers great picture quality overall. Its Mini LED backlight delivers excellent contrast, with deep blacks in dark scenes and very little blooming around bright objects. It has an excellent HDR color gamut and good color volume, so the latest HDR content looks vivid and lifelike. It also upscales 4k and 1080p content well, like Blu-rays, but the image is a bit softer than the Samsung and doesn't handle low-resolution content, like DVDs, well.

Like the Samsung TV, it supports HDMI 2.1 bandwidth for 8k @ 60Hz and 4k @ 120Hz gaming, but only on two ports. It's a bit limiting for some users, as you can only take full advantage of two high-bandwidth devices. It runs the Roku smart interface, which is easy to use and has a great selection of streaming apps, but it's not as polished as the Samsung TV's Tizen OS, and some streaming services aren't available.

The 6 Best Sounding TVs - Spring 2022

 I just use an Apple TV connected to it and use the Apple TV remote to turn it on and off. Another downside is the Apple TV remote wont change the volume on the tv like it did my old one. This should no longer be an issue when I get my new receiver, but definitely a negative.

  I think it would be nice if it could go brighter for watching tv during the day. The only reason it didnt get 5 stars is because its a Roku tv, which means the only remote that comes with it is a normal crappy Roku remote. This remote sucks. Like its the worst remote ever

 The operating system sucks and the remote only registers about 1 in 4 clicks no matter how hard you press or how long you wait between clicks. Its worthless. The little TCL remote was non-responsive way too often. I downloaded the TCL app on my phone which was reliable and instant. I preferred it, and set aside the remote.

When you first turn it on, you have to pair the remote to the TV.   The remote barely worked, I had to press the button 10 times to get it to do anything.  It took me over 10 minutes to enter my email address.  I even tried new batteries

  Luckily, I installed the Remote Control app on my phone and I was able to navigate around.  I decided to try re-pairing the remote to the TV and viola! it starting working normally.

Day two, I turn the TV on and the audio sounds like its under water, quiet and tinny.   I tried different streaming services, inputs, mute, volume control and turning it off and on.  No luck.  I decided to unplug it and plug it back in
