 Also for podcast, I would tend to get a dynamic mic , it helps reducing unwanted room noise . SM7b is nice , but even something like SM58, E835 or even the cheap XM8500 could work !.

If you had 1000 USD to buy a mic, what are you picking?

 I would say this mic fit's in between these other mic's Nice clean sound. Now I just have to pick up one of them caral mics I have hearing about

The quality of the microphone is fairly Robust and should be able to take some drops and abuse, but the carvin is More robust and around 40 years old still ticking, sound quality is higher pitched and more sensitive to voice pickup and feedback. I actually like the sound of all the mics I have. One thing for sure in the future I won't be buying microphone's I will be replacing the cartridge with something better. This mic has a nice well rounded sound, I also compared this with a sure beta 57a I bought and I have used my buddies sure sm58

 That's cool. It is a XLR connection, XLR cable doesn't come with the microphone, so you have to purchase that separately. The current price of this microphone is $99, which is pretty standard for any live sound or performance microphone, a dynamic microphone of this caliber. To me, they're worth a little more because they last a very long time for those stage performances

 I needed a microphone that only picked up what was right in front of it, and if something relatively loud happened behind it, the microphone wouldn't pick it up. The AT2020 did actually quite the opposite. If something happened behind the AT2020, two rooms away, and it was downstairs, the AT2020 would pick that up and seem to amplify it. The E835 does the opposite

 Now I can pretty much guarantee that if you've ever been to a live gig, a stage show, a conference show, a comedy show or performed on stage yourself, you've probably either used or at least seen someone using a Shure SM58. Over the years it's been the microphone of choice for huge artists such as Paul McCartney, Roger Daltrey, Robert Plant, Henry Rollins, Iggy Pop, Run DMC and countless others. In fact, these things are so popular there's even an official Shure SM58 day each year on May 8th to celebrate this much loved microphone. Hmm, I wonder what day this video is coming out

 As previously mentioned, it's pretty much the industry standard live microphone, but don't forget, this was originally intended to be a broadcast mic, so the SM58 is just at home when it's been used in the studio. For example, 58s are great for podcasting, delivering a really smooth kind of radio voiced tone for speech, and that off-axis rejection from the cardioid pickup pattern means that you'll pick up less background noise if you're recording on location, and because dynamic mics don't require 48 volts to operate like condenser mics do, an SM58 will work with any mixer or interface so you don't need to worry about a phantom power supply.  Of course, technology has advanced over the decades and Shure now offer higher specced alternatives such as the more expensive Beta 58 model, and obviously there's tons of other great options from manufacturers such as Sennheiser, SE Electronics, AKG and Lewitt Audio, but realistically none of these would exist if it wasn't for the Shure SM58. It really is a mic that every musician, performer or engineer should own at least one of, and yeah, whilst there might be other dynamic mics that boast higher performance specs, the SM58 has been tried, tested and proven at the highest levels for five decades now, and it really does offer the perfect mix of performance, reliability and affordability. As previously mentioned, it's pretty much the industry standard live microphone, but don't forget, this was originally intended to be a broadcast mic, so the SM58 is just at home when it's been used in the studio. For example, 58s are great for podcasting, delivering a really smooth kind of radio voiced tone for speech, and that off-axis rejection from the cardioid pickup pattern means that you'll pick up less background noise if you're recording on location, and because dynamic mics don't require 48 volts to operate like condenser mics do, an SM58 will work with any mixer or interface so you don't need to worry about a phantom power supply

Why Is The Shure SM58 Such A Popular Microphone?

 I use it primary and the SM58 is just a backup/secondary mic. The SM7B and SM58 are definitely not industry standards or the perfect choice when it comes to recording acoustic guitar but either will definitely work.

I personally have a Shure SM58 and a Shure SM7B with a cloudlifter and those two options cover everything I need. The SM7B can do pretty much everything so long as you know how to set it up properly. In about 6-7 weeks we are going to be moving into our new home we are in the process of purchasing. Going to be fortunate enough to have a dedicated studio/home office.

I've been playing for a bit over 2 years now and have recently taken an interest in the 'digital' side of things, I guess you could say.

So as a result I'm looking for the community to share their current setups and give me some recommendations around gear etc.

Some further info below to assist.

This is just set up to the side of our dining area and is a bit of a hodge podge mess.

So effectively have: a good selection of guitars between the two of us, Katana, AKG K240 headphones and an old Cube.

I've been tinkering with using the Katana as an interface into Reaper for recording etc.

Things I'll be looking to add over time - kind of in preferential order:

* Audio Interface - Katana is workable but not ideal - currently looking at a Scarlett 2i2
* Studio Monitors - looking for good value for money here, don't need anything too big/loud/expensive
* DAW - at this stage I will probably stick with Reaper, good so far and good value
* Amp Sim/Plugins
* New desk/chairs
* Mic - for vocals and acoustic guitar (and maybe piano if my wife gets back into playing)
* Midi Keyboard
* Other embellishments to make it look nice etc
* Tube Amp/Pedals - not sure if this is realistic for home use/small studiio but I'd like to be able to get a nice tube/pedal setup, don't always like being attached to the PC
* New guitars
