The dome shape and overlapping five-pole system mean the walls aren’t as vertical as the Wawona's above, but it’s still very easy to move around inside, and the reward is far better resistance against strong gusts (it’s rated for 3+ season use, meaning the tent can hold its own). And the rest of the design is equally up to snuff with an excellent mix of quality materials and design features, including two roof vents, functional organization, and even reflective detailing to help you see the tent in the dark.

It’s worth noting that the Base Camp recently went up in price by a considerable $80 (from $469 to $549 for the 6P capacity), making it the second-priciest option in REI’s camping tent collection (right behind the $599 Wonderland 6 below). It’s far and away the most weather-ready option of the bunch, but it uses less mesh than both the Wonderland and Skyward below, which has a notable impact on ventilation. Additionally, despite a similarly sized floor area, the Base Camp feels noticeably less roomy due to the lack of vertical walls. Side note: I have a tent I use for backpacking, looking for recommendations on a bigger tent to sleep 2 people and a dog. My gf isn’t about the ultralight life

Car Camping Set Up

A number of leading ultralight tents are built with Dyneema—the high-tech fabric commonly used in boat sails and praised for its strength-to-weight ratio—and the Zpacks Duplex is best in class. With an incredibly low all-in weight of just 1 pounds 5 ounces (counting stakes and using two trekking poles for support), it’s by far the lightest tent here, yet still sleeps two and includes a bathtub floor for protection from the elements. In use, we found the Zpacks to feel decently roomy for its weight with a 48-inch peak height, and you can adjust the dimensions fairly easily depending on the campsite and conditions. In the end, no ultralight tent is perfect, but the Duplex is a high-quality option that has been relied upon by serious thru-hikers for years.

What are the shortcomings of the Zpacks Duplex? We’ve had no issues with water entering the tent—even while camping in snow—but the open sides and thin materials definitely can make it feel drafty in certain conditions. Second, with a trekking pole design you don’t get the steep walls of tents like the Copper Spur above, making the Zpacks a feasible but cramped option for two backpackers. And third, setting up the tent is more complicated than with a freestanding model, so we recommend practicing before heading out to make sure you know how to get a taut, even pitch. I want bug protection and rain protection because I don't like bugs (f ticks) and sleeping out gives me the creeps sometimes, so not really into the tarp and bivy. It seems to me like the Zpacks Duplex (occasionally bring my wife or a friend) would be a good option, being 19oz and having bug and rain protection integrated (not a tarp or bivy system, so it's simpler i.e. one piece)

 \- I like a larger space away from flies and mossies in Oz to hang out and read at the end of the day if required. Also if holed up avoiding rain the extra space is nice.

Looking to upgrade from my old/heavy REI single tent. Looking mainly at the Zpacks Duplex and Gossamer Gear The Two. Beside the price difference, does anyone have any experience or pros/cons for these two tents?

Gossamer The Two vs. Zpacks Duplex

 One of the biggest benefits to the Dynamo material is that it's waterproof. This tent is 100 waterproof. I've never had any sort of leaking. I've had no issues

 You don't have to worry about the coatings aging and having to be reapplied. There's very little here with this tint that's going to age and that's not the case with copycat versions of this tent. I know that I've said a lot in regards to this tent, so let me wrap this up. in the end: this is a very impressive tint

Everyone Copies This Tent For A Reason - Zpacks Duplex Ultralight Tent Review

 So I won't go into any more specs on it because I'm sure you can find a lot of information out there about it. Let's talk about my opinion of this tent after 3,000 miles on the trail and what I like about it and what I don't like about it. So first off, obviously what I love about the tent is how insanely lightweight and roomy it is. ZPacks Duplex 3,000+ Mile Review

 However, the ONE thing that is bad about BOTH tents is the way the end tie outs are sewn and sealed. The tents BOTH leak at the tie out points. This is due to the way they are sealed. It seams as if the seam seal was applied FIRST and then the tie outs sewn into the fabric

UPADATED AGAIN: I have purchased both the 1 and 2 person tent. Seems like very well quality and lightweight. However, the ONE thing that is bad about BOTH tents is the way the end tie outs are sewn and sealed. The tents BOTH leak at the tie out points

 The tent leaked at both ends where the tie outs are sewn into the fabric. These points are seam sealed, so I do not know why or how it leaked at both points. The water on the floor of the tent was about the size of a quarter. I have since sprayed all of the fly seams and the tie out points with silicone treatment

Very lightweight.

 So we just/\s/want to lower that down and make sure you're/\s/ not getting rain splatter and wind coming/\s/into the tent so we'll just open the doors. We'll take our trekking poles which/\s/are set to around 120 centimeters now/\s/ Zpax recommends 122. But for a storm pitch you/\s/can come down to 110 or maybe even lower and/\s/ you can see that just brought us down a bunch. So/\s/now we'll just tighten this guy line a little bit/\s/ redo our doors, tighten our doors, you can/\s/see how much lower that even brought us/\s/ Now if we go ahead and do the same to the other/\s/side or we could technically even bring this lower/\s/ and we could bring yeah, if it was really storm and/\s/then we'd want to bring this in basically as tight/\s/ as you can for the doors

 Don't just stuff them door flaps in guy/\s/lines to the middle mosquito net tucked under. Now we like to float it in thirds first wind. a little more complicated when it's/\s/windy just tuck that back in there so we're folding thirds and/\s/then pull it into the middle, squish the air out again. make sure that/\s/everything is like tucked inside

How to Setup the Zpacks Duplex | + Tips & Tricks

hey what's up guys it's kodak today i want to 
show you how to set up the z-packs duplex in  

six simple steps i think this is one of the best 
tent that's ever been made it's been copied a lot  

and we've been using this one in particular for 
the last year and a half we first carried it on  

the pct last year and now starting next week we'll 
be carrying it on the great divide trail in canada  

so step number one is going to be check your 
ground make sure there's nothing like sharp or  

pointy that can puncture the tent and then 
go ahead and lay it out number two is stake  

out the four corners leave them somewhat 
loose we'll tighten them in a future step  

step number three is to set up the 
trekking pole and stake out the sides

step number four is to go around and tension 
and tighten all your lines right now we have a  

decent pitch but it's still a little bit loose 
and now we'll just go through start with the  

ridge lines so just tighten one side and then 
the other and now we'll tighten our four corners

all right at the end of the video we'll go 
through and show some like common problems  

and if it's like a little bit off and we'll talk 
about yeah just like some solutions for how to fix  

like a wonky tent but for now we'll keep moving on 
to step number five we're just going to pull out  

the guy lines over our head and our feet there's 
a few ways to go about this one you can just  

stake it directly into the ground like that 
and you can see that's going to pull it out  

a little bit and help just secure the tent 
in the event of like strong winds or storms  

my favorite way to do it is either to tie this 
up to a tree if you have a tree that's close  

to really pull that out or you can use a trekking 
pole or a stick if you have a nice wide stick you  

can just put it through the y and stake it out if 
you're using something like a trekking pole you'll  

tie what's called a it is a clove hitch it's just 
two half hitches one on each side of the line

coming back in on itself and then you can just  

put your tent stake whatever it is through 
there your truck and pull and then tighten it up

there we have a clove hitch and just stake it out

and you can see using the trekking pole how 
much extra headroom that's going to give you  

especially if you just adjust 
this slightly you could loosen up  

these corner stakes and that gives you a ton of 
room in there and just go back through do the same  

thing to your feet end and then you don't have 
to worry about your feet or your head touching  

and getting like condensation or anything on you 
you don't want to go too much or you'll start to  

get this like weird sagging effect here now 
to lock the doors they just clip right onto  

the little clip here one for each side 
and it adjusts with this little line lock  

to clip that clip this side and now you can 
pull on this cord to actually tension it  

now we'll go through and talk about some like 
tips tricks tent stakes and what to do if like  

the tent's set up just like slightly wonky how 
to notice it and how to fix it from there so the  

first thing we'll talk about is if the tent is 
a little bit off let me just undo this quickly  

so what we can see happening now is like one 
common problem if some of the lines are tighter  

than the others and you'll notice you'll get 
these lines these ridges that run through it  

and all of that means is the line that that points 
to is a little bit too tight and the other side is  

too loose so you can see by either tightening the 
loose side and we can still see some lines in here  

so that means we'll need to loosen this side 
just a little bit more and then tighten this  

and that'll fix it now we're getting 
some lines going the other way  

so we'll just tighten this side you'll also want 
to use a rock whenever possible this will help  

prevent bending stakes if you use your foot this 
is by far the easiest way to bend and ruin stakes  

so always try to use a rock one of the best 
parts about the duplex is how adjustable it is  

so in the event of a storm we're going to want 
to pitch this closer to the ground you can see  

now how high it is off the ground and that's 
because of the height of our trekking poles  

and the distance of our corner stakes so we just 
want to lower that down and make sure you're  

not getting rain splatter and wind coming 
into the tent so we'll just open the doors

we'll take our trekking poles which 
are set to around 120 centimeters now  

zpax recommends 122 but for a storm pitch you 
can come down to 110 or maybe even lower and  

you can see that just brought us down a bunch so 
now we'll just tighten this guy line a little bit

it into its stuff sack first thing you want to  

make sure that the doors are first zipped up and 
then undo your storm flaps come through under  

your tent start pulling stakes pull out your 
trekking poles do your guy lines on the ends

now cuban tents and most tents in general 
do best when they're rolled either folded or  

rolled don't just stuff them door flaps in guy 
lines to the middle mosquito net tucked under

now we like to float it in thirds first wind

a little more complicated when it's 
windy just tuck that back in there

so we're folding thirds and 
then pull it into the middle

squish the air out again make sure that 
everything is like tucked inside it'll  

be nice and protected sandwiched in the 
middle especially if you're camped on  

dirt and pine needles it'll tend to stick to 
the bottom of this when it gets a little damp  

and then we'll just fold it in half one more time

and now we just roll guy lines in 
the middle keep them out of the way

there you go and now just 
slip it inside your stuff sack  

put it in your pack and you're good to roll

 So for 2.3 ounces more weight and fifty dollars more in cost, is the extra six inches of floor space worth it? For the duplex cell, that's for you to decide for me since I've already bought the duplex cell, and I really loved the fact that I didn't have to stress over whether my feet were touching the wall and again, I didn't have my hood getting damp for me. Yes, because 20.8 ounces is still ridiculously light for a two-person tent, but if I was having to make that decision right now to go with the new duplex or the Duplex L, it would be pretty hard for me to make that decision and also just to make you aware

 First off, I love that this is a very lightweight two-person backpacking shelter. Finding a two-person shelter. that weighs significantly less than two pounds I think is a win if weight is important to you. The Duplex Cell is what I would say is the second most simple two-person tent up, the first being the duplex

 Yes, because 20.8 ounces is still ridiculously light for a two-person tent, but if I was having to make that decision right now to go with the new duplex or the Duplex L, it would be pretty hard for me to make that decision and also just to make you aware. if you're going to use the Duplex L as an actual two-person tent, you're planning to go backpacking with another person and share that space for only .8 ounces more

 The Z Packs Duplex L is very similar to the duplex that you all have seen me use in the past, but it's got more usable length, hence the name Duplex L. The difference as far as dimensions between the duplex and the Duplex L are in the bathtub floor. They take up the same space the same footprint at a campsite, but the floor width on the Duplex L is actually one inch more narrow than the regular duplex, and the floor length is a half a foot longer. So six more inches of space either in the head area or the foot area, depending on how you position yourself in the tent
