 So we have three controls here, a distortion filter and volume control. Distortion for the amount of gain, volume for the overall volume and the filter control doesn't work like a tone control so it's more like a low pass filter. So when we turn it to the left it gets more bright and when we turn it to the right it gets more low end. So this is my clean guitar sound

4 Tips How You Can Use The ProCo Rat 2 Distortion

 Okay, and as you increase the distortion obviously, yeah, all right, a little more. Okay, let's turn the distortion all the way up. and let's go with the neck pickup on this one. Hey Whoo! that is huge! Let's check out the filter knob

It's designed to be used on stage

 I actually had the Turbo Rat, which had the same op amp but just some different diodes for more output and a different flavor of clipping. It was an aggressive sound, but it really worked with the amp I was playing through, which was a solid state Carvin, a great clean tone but absolutely no breakup on its own. For a while I strayed away from the Rat because I was in search of something else, a little bit more touch sensitive, something that would clean up better with the guitar's volume knob. But it wasn't until I recently picked up a vintage Rat reissue with some crazy mods on it that I realized this was a sound that I've been looking for for a long time, and I really missed it

 So... another thing about the rad is that doesn't have a ton of output like your average overdrive unity gain I found to be about three o'clock on the volume knob and that's why a lot of guys mod these to use a different kind of diode clipping like an LED or just a diode lift which really bumps the volume up way past unity gain there's also a real special compressed quality that happens when you increase the distortion nearly all the way it gets that spongy attack and it's really cool it makes me want to just hit the strings and hear the sound bounce back at me as far as cleanup goes the rat isn't one of those pedals that gets crystal clear but it really enables you to back off and get sort of a dirty crunch and then ease back into a lead tone you let's switch over to some single coils because that's where I think this rat really shines you get that compression and sag and a smooth tone which is a great match for spiky single coils well there's a look at a vintage rat the rat to specifically and you can find these and the newer reissues from proko all day long on reverb calm thanks for watching

 I already took two pedals off my board and have extra space. You can go from saturated cleans to twangy country southern rock, to classic rock and high gain metal territory. If you have a tube amp it would serve as an overdrive plus distortion. Its built like a tank and access in the back to wiring

 I can run the gain from 9am to 3pm into a clean channel, use my volume knob and convincingly get done what needs to get done from Sweet Home Alabama to Enter Sandman.  The point is to get the job done and feel inspired - this pedal does it. There are also several other pedals that do it for my tastes - this is one of them.  I use this pedal as an "amp channel" not as an overdrive to an already overdriven amp

There are definitely many really good OD/Dist pedals out there - Once you get to a certain level of excellence, it becomes subjective and there is no "best". For my needs, this pedal is as good as it gets and I can cover an entire gig with a good clean channel and this pedal. I can run the gain from 9am to 3pm into a clean channel, use my volume knob and convincingly get done what needs to get done from Sweet Home Alabama to Enter Sandman.  The point is to get the job done and feel inspired - this pedal does it

About as good as it can get

 Now in the center you've got the lowest gain. Next is the blue, which is the up position, and then in down position you have red, which is the highest gain. Another aspect that's really crucial to that is no matter where you set the gain control, it sounds great. It doesn't mush out when you turn it all the way up and it doesn't get weak or flaccid when you turn it down
