Out of the box it comes formatted as ex-FAT, but reformatting to NTFS made a huge improvement in data transfer speeds. 3. 1. Windows Defender scanning files being opened/written using a single thread causes a huge bottleneck when dealing with lots of small files on modern SSDs. Multi-theaded scanning would have been immensely helpful, but defender only uses a single thread in these operations (probably multithreaded in some parts, not all) - wow.

As advertised, it is faster than all those, and also faster than the cloud I have with my cable Internet provider that claims to be super fast. It's a relatively small hand-held size, ideal for quick transfer of large files, video, etc. among Type-A and Type-C devices. Get the capacity you need and make sure your devices are compatible (my kid's lower-end tablet doesn't recognize the drive, for example, but it's great between laptops)

However, I wouldn't recommend anything less than a 500GB, preferably 1TB or even 2 TB if you can. Get the biggest you can afford. Samsung T5 is fine, no need for anything supporting over 500MB/s as even the Series S|X are only USB 3.0
