 They vary in weight, wicking, breathability, UPF and comfort. My two favorite are the Patagonia Capilene Cool daily sun hoodie and the Mountain Hardware Crater Lake hoody.

I like to avoid sunscreen if I can. In the past, I've found that a pair of compression sun sleeves and sun legs do a great job of keeping the sun off without making me feel hotter. In direct sun, I actually feel cooler with the sleeves than without. They're common in cycling, but I don't see them much in the back country.

I've seen many people wearing sun hoodies or long sleeve button up shirts when backpacking though. I'm wondering if anyone can give me some comparisons between these three methods of sun protection: compression sun sleeves, sun hoodies, and loose button up shirts.

To me, a hoodie seems like it would be hotter than the others, but offer the most sun protection, covering your ears and sides of your face which the others don't. A button shirt seems like it would protect your neck with a collar, while also having the benefit of being able to unbutton the front for ventilation. The sleeves are the one thing I do have experience with and I've really enjoyed using them. I feel like they keep me cool, and can be paired with multiple outfits for different activities.

Sun Protecting Clothing

 So, if you can do one-wear-and-wash cycle they are pretty nice to wear in the heat. And they do feel soft, not itchy like Merino can get.

I am looking for a comfortable every day t-shirt that packs light and looks presentable on an every day basis.  Traveling to the Sahara, so it needs to stay cool. 

I always hated synthetic tee's except for running (they stink, they don't breathe well and they look like plastic bags).  But, cotton tee's get sweaty, they shrink, they pill, and they don't last very long.   

I've read some great things about Patagonia Capilene cool everyday shirts.  Anyone tried them?  Which version is best? (seems like they have multiple models). Looking for something that will be a good every day tee, both on and off the trail.

Wow, this blend is super comfy right out of the packaging. Patagonia nails sizing on this again, with a slim fit for wicking, but not too tight.

r/Ultralight - "The Weekly" - Week of March 15, 2021

I love the weight/feel of the patagonia Women's Long-Sleeved Capilene Cool Daily Shirt. But every sun hoody/long sleeve I have found is pullover style and I really don't like those, I find them uncomfortable and I want something that zips up in the front so I can wear it over a (Capilene Cool Daily) t-shirt and zip/unzip based on how hot I am. The lightest zip-up hoody I've got is the Arcteryx Kyanite LT but I find that gets too warm when hiking uphill and I overheat fast.

 So we're going to undo the zipper now zip that down we've got a nice metal, zip open this guy up and we can take a look. We can see. We'Ve got good reinforcement throughout for the pockets and we've got a nice thick gripper here, rubberized gripper. That goes around up until you start hitting the front panels, and it's nice and thick to stop your jersey from riding up and again nice and comfortable

 When someone is dropped or punctures, we wait for them taking stops on the climbs, but we regularly regroup on the descents we ride together, which is a great sentiment for group, rides 100 percent. If we flip this guy over, you can see, we've got rafa logo on the bottom and then we've got a three pocket design and of course, we've got a safety pocket here again with a metal zip and that nice little sort of rubberized grip there as well. So that makes it nice and easy to get in there and you can throw your keys in there and just for the idea of size. There is my my trusty pack of cards and you can see it fits in there and zips up nicely

Rapha Core Jersey - Unboxing and Review

 So it's the rapha core jersey, as you can see here, i've got it in purple. This is size large and on a six foot. Four man - and it fits me, i think very, very well. So what i use this for is pro this jersey, 4 is mainly going to be like kind of like group and more casual rides, because it is the core jersey

 The second thing i don't like about this jersey is it's more of a my fault thing. Really. I ordered a large, and this is where i learned that i should order mediums from now on, it's a little bit baggy around the front, but uh. If you go for the right size, unlike i did, then you should be alright

 So if you put a lot of stuff in there you're going to find they do sag a little bit, but anyway, this they work. Just fine they've got a nice stretch on the top, so for 60 pounds you're getting what you're paying for really so. The first thing i really like about this jersey is the color selection. If you go on rapper's website for the core jerseys i mean they've got like especially the men's side

 I ordered a large, and this is where i learned that i should order mediums from now on, it's a little bit baggy around the front, but uh. If you go for the right size, unlike i did, then you should be alright. So so for my conclusion, i think it's really great jersey for the price loads of selection, loads of choice. You just got to buy it before it sells out too quick really and you don't get the color that you like thanks for watching, see you later

 It’s like they were cut  for some one with a 32+ inseamI’m 5’9 204 with a 30’ inseam and these are maybe 3inches longer then I’d like. Even considering the price and the brand I can’t justify keep this as they will ride over my knee. Rapha please fix this!!!

I’ve been wearing Rapha for years and this company is known for quality and good fit. Every thing is perfect except these have the longest inseam! Like not flattering at all. It’s like they were cut  for some one with a 32+ inseamI’m 5’9 204 with a 30’ inseam and these are maybe 3inches longer then I’d like. Even considering the price and the brand I can’t justify keep this as they will ride over my knee

Definitely a difference, but not sure it is worth the price difference, I’ve had both $50-$180 and would say the best bang for your buck is gonna be Rapha Core Lightweight Jersey, $80, great for the heat, quality product, and it looks good. If you purely want functionality and money isn’t an issue than yes the top end jerseys are better for heat and more aero.

I'm getting more into biking lately and have targeted 50-100 mile rides in the next few months. I've been riding with cheap $30 bike shorts and a super light t-shirt. Also just got some $40 bibs. I live in South Florida where it's hot and humid, so staying cool and managing sweat is my goal. I keep seeing the higher end apparel listed at $180-300. Is there really that much of a difference?!   


Note: I don't care much about the look or name brands. I bike solo and am more concerned with function that "looking" like a cyclist.
