As far as note taking e readers go, there are quite a few options. Since you said you are going to use it for both reading and note taking, I would say to avoid Remarkable, Sony DPT line or Kobo Elipsa as they are only good at either one of them but not both. 
So, I would say a better option would be either a Likebook or an Onyx Boox device. Both of them are Android based and you will get the benefits of Android like using your own choice of reading app, easy sideloading of books by using multiple methods like via USB or autosyncing with Google drive etc. Among these two brands, Onyx devices have better software while Likebooks are slightly cheaper.
Now coming to the size, there are primarily three sizes, 7.8' or 10.3' or 13.3'. If you primarily read PDFs, don't go for a 7.8' size as it would make the text too small. If most of your books are in reflowable format such as epubs, then 7.8' will be fine. If you read a lot of PDFs, then decide the size based on the native size of the PDFs and your use case. If the PDFs you read are of A4 size and have narrow borders, then 13.3' will be a better choice for you. Otherwise, 10.3' will be a perfect size. Btw, the devices from Onyx have a split screen option so you can open a book of your choice on one side and notes on the other side which will be really helpful for taking bullet points while reading imo. If your workflow uses this a lot, then go for a 13.3' as the extra screen size really helps.
Now my personal recommendations for different screen sizes will be Onyx Boox Max Lumi for 13.3'. It's the best in that size. For 10.3' size, my suggestion will be to go for Boox Note 3. Even though Note air is also a great option in that size, I won't recommend it for your use case because you said you will use it on the go a lot. Considering the fact that it has E carta screen instead of Mobius screen, it is more susceptible to damage and the official case doesn't have a pen loop and the magnets in the pen are weak, it'll be easy to lose the pen too. For 7.8' size, either go for Nova air or Nova 3 color if you wanna try a color e ink device.
Whichever device you buy, I would strongly recommend you to buy a nice flip cover with a loop for the pen. If you are buying a Boox device, the in box pen works but will suggest you to try either a Steadtler Norris Jumbo or Lamy Al-Star EMR or Samsung Tab S7 pen or Wacom One pen for an even better writing feel.

I'm a french philosophy student, i'm in my fourth years and I read a LOT, every day ! But books are expensive, rare ( yes ! some is hard to found at "normal" price, even in France ) and heavy ! i can't take them when i'm on travel ! ( and having multiple book in my bag when i go to the school is heavy, not really comfortable )

I tried to read on my laptop but my eye going lazy really fast and i can't read in a park when the sun is out ! ( and the battery is also a problem haha ) 

So i want to know if you have some suggestion for a good e.reader for my utilization ! i also need to take many notes when i read a book, also he had to be solid, i need him H24 on my bag haha

A big screen is a plus because i'm also a weeb, if i can read some fun manga on it when i have a hegel-burnout is really cool haha ! ( a big storage or micro SD compatibility is a plus !! ) 

The price is not a problem if he's justify ( my birthday is soon and i have money from my summer job ), i see this more like an investment for my studies haha

E.reader for a philosophy student ?

I took the leap of faith with a Likebook P6 - after mulling it over and over - and having it in my pocket was such a gamechanger that I got an Onyx Boox Nova 3 almost right away!. The ability to have Android on board; read and annotate books from a variety of stores and have access to all my databases and notes is a game changer for me. I needed something pocket-sized: the P6 is perfect, but when I got the Boox I realised that speed is really important.

Also knowledge-worker type here; also in UK. I can't answer your specific question, but I would say go for it! I took the leap of faith with a Likebook P6 - after mulling it over and over - and having it in my pocket was such a gamechanger that I got an Onyx Boox Nova 3 almost right away!

The ability to have Android on board; read and annotate books from a variety of stores and have access to all my databases and notes is a game changer for me. I needed something pocket-sized: the P6 is perfect, but when I got the Boox I realised that speed is really important. Responsiveness is key, and there's always a slight lag anyway due to the way eink works. (The P6 is fine for a reader, but not for any sustained writing, for example)

A question that many people have asked before me, and many people will ask again. I have watched Voja's videos on both. I'll admit I'm still stuck on this decision and thought I will ask for a few more opinions before I take the plunge. Both seem like great options, so I'm not sure there's exactly a right answer!  


Plans for use: I am an academic so I plan on using the device to read papers (pdf), some light ebook reading, and taking notes from when I'm in the lab or in meetings or from the papers I'm reading. I am looking forward to reading outside.   


I am not oposed to a back light, nor am I opposed to having a more full android experience like you would get on the Boox. I am drawn to the Boox for the added functionality and the option to load on things like spotify for music whilst I read etc. However the design aesthetic of the pens and the writing experience on the Supernote looks awesome, and the community support seems great.   


I am aware that I will probably need to spend more on a second pen. Also important to note that I am in the UK so where relevant I will have to pay import tax. 

Has anyone here had the opportunity to try both? What are people's thoughts on these devices and any opinions on what may be more suitable for my use case scenario?

Supernote A5X or Boox Note Air - choice for academic?

I now carry only this, not a couple of paperbacks, a notebook and a pen. The battery life is phenomenal! I read 3-4 hours a day 5 days a week with frequent interruptions (work, what can you do?) so it often powers off and the battery is still 50%-60% at the end of the week! The ability to change the screen lighting makes it easy on the eyes, the bluetooth connection works well with ear buds but I've only been able to bluetooth tether it to my phone once. The Wi-Fi tether works like a champ every time. My only "complaints" are: 1) setting up the google play store (for the nook and Kindle apps) is frustrating if you don't, as I did not, read the instructions (the reboot is, in fact, necessary!) 2) Every time I would tether the device the location would automatically turn on (this has been alleviated with the latest update but contrary to the update notes, location is NOT turned off by default

Now you can change, you can change the setting, okay, so normal is like the best picture, the picture, see how the picture got a lot better, but scrolling it does this weird refresh thing, so like these different settings are, and then the fastest where you'll lose some of the image quality, the image quality won't get as better, but you see that it'll do best, so you could watch some videos on this, they won't look the best because E Ink technology is just not there, but you could watch some basic videos, like if you didn't really need to see a whole lot, you know, and so basically there's four modes that are in between high quality image, less smooth scrolling and animations, and then on the opposite end of the spectrum you have a more degraded image quality, but with like more smoother animations and things like that, and there are four modes between those two spectrums, so I like ePaper devices again because they're so much better for your eyes, and like for me, I like, I can read a lot longer, I read on Kindle, as you can see I do some reading and studying in Logos Bible software, I use Memorize for Hebrew and Greek vocabulary, you know, I do all sorts of things with this, sometimes I go on Facebook and Reddit, well of course I don't use this device, I say that this is what I was using the device for, I've moved to another device that has a color E Ink screen, but things like a device like this, they're great for if you're a student and you're taking notes in classes, you can go to that Note app, you know, you can, remember how we recorded the audio, you can save your notes, organize them into files, you can insert audio and then take notes while you're on there, if you're in church and you're listening to a sermon, you want to take notes, if you're a pastor or a preacher or a Sunday school teacher or something, you know, you could write out all your notes here and you could have, you know, you could, if you use this for that kind of thing, you can have all your sermons and notes and things right there with you, I mean if you're in meetings, if you're doing brainstorming, you know, whatever, this is a great reading device because of the screen technology, your eyes won't get as tired, I used it a lot for that, you can do some light browsing on the internet depending on what you're doing and there's a lot of different third party apps. So the Books Note Air is a really nice device, I think this device goes for like 420, 430, this is the Note Books, Onyx Books Note Air 2, it is a really good device, I like the user interface, it's better than the device that I'm actually using and so I am selling this eventually and I'm getting rid of it but I wanted to do a review of it, I love e-ink technology, so if you like this kind of content, I like talking about e-paper and e-ink and things like that, but yeah, so this is the Onyx Books Note Air, please like, comment, subscribe if you enjoyed the video, have a wonderful day.

Onyx Boox Note Air 2 Review

 Why this Note Air? So it started off with, I knew I really cared about four things. Screen size, must have a pen, more than one ebook store, and must be good value for money. I'm the finance guy. Of course I don't buy expensive things

 Size always matters, for many. Screen size. So now I was deciding between Note 3 and Note Air. They were both 10

 You go to apps, transfer books, push here and then download them. Super easy. The Books Note Air is okay to hold in one hand for more than five minutes when you're reading like this, but as soon as you actually have a cover with the Note Air, something like this, this additional weight and you're holding it like this for more than five minutes will start to make your wrist feel strained. So I know I'm stating the obvious, but I actually think it's really important that this is actually a two-handed device

 The screen is 6 inches, so I wanted something bigger. Note 3 was out for me. On the other hand, the MaxLumi, the screen size was 13.3 inches, which was a bit too big for me

Onyx Boox Note Air Review: My 2 week Experience. 6 Tips

 I have not seen it attempt to use those modes to assist scrolling. Might work for built in apps, but does nothing for my apps.  Yes, I'm being harsh. Because it's not ready for the price it's calling for

Not impressed

 E-Ink display means that it's gonna last for a very long time. The battery life on this is absolutely fantastic. It does not disappoint. It will go for days on end, in fact, weeks, if you're not using the backlight on it

 So you can get crazy amounts of screen on time out of this, especially if you don't use the backlight. When you don't need it, like in daylight or bright ambient conditions, you don't need to have that backlight on, which is probably one of the biggest consumers there of battery. The screen, yes, the refresh rate is a little bit slowing, sometimes can be a little bit irritating. The only real con I've found with this tablet now in my week or so of using it is that occasionally when I tap on the screen, it doesn't respond and I need to go and repeat that same action, tap again

 So this screen here is 10.3 inches, and it has a resolution of 1404 by 1872 with their Carter screen. So of course, it's just the black and white, but these screens have crazy good battery life. And it does still give us a DPI

 This one, the pixel density of 227, which isn't too bad. Now it does have a backlight on it, which I'll go over it. So we've got adjustments for warm and cold with that backlight. One of the best that I've used for quite some time

At around 500 Euros the e-ink tablet is pretty expensive and still has some flaws and head scratches which can definitely influence buying decision.
