Other people on this post are recommending you get a full frame, interchangeable lens camera. I recommend against that because if it's your first camera, you'll want something like the the Nikon Coolpix, Sony Cybershot, or Canon Powershot that will give you a good introduction into photography because they all have multiple features built directly into the camera. A decent point and shoot such as the ones I listed above are a good way to learn what kind of photography you enjoy doing.

I already have a waterproof phone and if I need to dive deeper than a pool (which I do on occasion) a GoPro is significantly cheaper with significantly better image quality.  You would think that a camera company, producing a consumer grade camera would outperform a camera phone

 I hated how it chose exposure based on my focus points (I did mess with different focus point styles) and I couldn't get the images to clear up no matter how I tried to expose the shot.  But the water won't come out. I don't understand how it got in! And I really can't get it out. If it's hot out then the water turns to steam and fogs up the whole lens. I really am mad

 The old AW series used to take a lot of work with exposure compensation and metering to get images that weren't over or under exposed...but the new W300 consistently does a much better job with this

Picture quality is ok, but not outstanding. I did not use it under water, but I did use it whitewater rafting in the Grand Canyon, where it was exposed to water, sand and some abuse. It handled all this easily. The battery only lasted about 3 days: 200 photos and 15 1-4 minute videos

Take a look at the Olympus TG-5 instead.

So far, very impressed. Zoom in to see the bald eagle near the top of the tree at the point. That was a long ways away.

Hi guys, it's been a long time since a tribute a waterproof camera so this time I'll show you Panasonic ft7. This is not necessarily a camera for diving if you spend a lot of time outdoors in wet or dusty conditions. It makes sense to get one of these in order to ensure it will keep working in hard conditions. As is typical for waterproof cameras, this one is also a bit bulkier and heavier than a usual compact camera

 60p is available in Full HD while in 4k, Ft7 records at 30 frames per second. bitrate is surprisingly high close to 100 megabits per second. There is a limit for single video and it is 29 minutes, which should be enough for most users. High-speed video is available, but only at 100 frames per second in low HD resolution

 All of the back buttons have distinguishable feel when used except for the zoom buttons for some unknown reason Panasonic made these too squishy and with short travel, only two buttons can be reassigned and these are marked as F + 1 + FN - I've set them up to give me direct access over ISO and white Balance when powered on camera will remind the user to review precautions before going underwater. Each and every time this message will pop up after a week of using it I was unable to find how to turn this off. If anyone knows, please leave a comment because this is the single most irritating thing about Ft-7 lenses. Four and a half times optical zoom ranging from 28 to 128 millimeters in full-frame equivalent

 It works. We just have to be aware of that when you're shooting with it. The Panasonic key S7 has a 4.6 times zoom

 Ps7 is capable of 4k video in 24 or 30. The focusing is acceptable, but it's not blazingly fast. So if you're using the camera like this, you know, floating down the river I'm primarily using an intelligent auto mode, which does a pretty decent job of everything put in front of it. But I do find the focusing a little on the laggy side and a little tough to work with on a moving vote
