Took 1 star off because I found there was a bit too much padding in the heel/tongue and the front mesh could have been a bit more breathable like the 1500’s.

Like running on a cloud

The New Balance 890v8 gets a complete redesign this year, opting for FuelCell as the primary midsole foam with just a bit of RevLite. But in so doing, does v8 lose the essence of what makes it an 890?

New Balance 890v8 - First Run - YouTube

I'm estimating 3-4 months tops before the REVlite pads are completely gone and I'm left with no outsole/grip on the forefoot. Maybe not but we'll see..

if not for the immediate wearing of the REVlite outsole on the forefoot immediately under the ball of your foot, I’d say these shoes are one of the most comfortable I’ve ever owned from day 1 - no breaking in period but probably because I’m coming from NB 890v6’s.

Would be perfect... but REVLite outsole material has disintegrated after 1mo/150mi

 We'll see how they hold up. All right, you guys, it's been seven days of running. That's about 60 miles of marathon training, wore these shoes for every run for the seven days, which included recovery runs, slow pace, really no issues. That included a tempo run, it included a 19, more or less 19 mile long run, and then track workout

 So didn't really prefer it for the speed work. Again, recovery workout, slow work is no big deal. What I preferred it for was for the long run, the 19 mile long run. Really enjoyed this shoe for that long run, provides really structured, stable platform

 So this is the latest and greatest technology that they have, light weight, super bouncy. I'm ready to take it for a spin, and I hope you're ready to go with me. We're going to see how well they hold up. At first feel, they're really firm, really bouncy, nice solid structure, nice solid platform on the bottom

 This latest iteration has been introduced with the Fuel Cell Foam technology. And myself, personally, huge fan of Fuel Cell Foam. I wanted to show you this Rebel, I've been running in these Rebels for the last 250 miles. Also Fuel Cell Foam, very lightweight racing shoe, I wanted you to see this little fin on the lateral side that helps against supination, a really neutral runner, but I wanted to show you that the New 890 kind of has some similar technology in its newest version

If you loved the previous versions of the New Balance 890 running shoe – a lightweight neutral trainer – you will either love or hate the latest version 8.

New Balance introduced its FuelCell foam technology to this latest iteration of the 890. This means major changes in how the shoe feels and functions.

FuelCell foam is super lightweight and bouncy. Some folks hate it, but I am a huge fan, having run many miles in the Rebels, and recently purchased the FuelCell TC.

The upper is quite breathable with two layers of material, making for a very soft and plush inside. The tongue is gusseted so it does not move locations at all, becoming practically unnoticeable.

The shoe is relatively stiff considering there is no carbon-plating. The midsole is primarily a huge chunk of FuelCell foam, which is extremely lightweight and bouncy.

The outsole is a combination of rubber around the edges, but EVA foam for the major portion of ground contact. I’m not a big fan of this as I'm not sure how long the shoe would last, but I am pleased with its performance.

One last thing on the outsole: The 890v8 has incorporated a feature from the Rebel in which the outside portion of the shoe looks like a bulge, or a fin, to prevent supination during the run.

With the addition of FuelCell foam to this iteration of the 890, the shoe is extremely lightweight, about 9 ounces for size 10.

The shoes handled the full range of runs very well, which makes this shoe a good choice for a daily trainer.

The FuelCell midsole provided comfort for recovery runs, a lightweight bounce for speed work, and a stable platform for long runs. Though the shoe was preferred for some workouts over others.

If you are a neutral runner who does not over-pronate too much, and you are looking for a daily trainer that can take you to the longer miles, the New Balance 890 v8 may be for you. If you prefer lower heel-to-toe drop shoes and a lightweight but bouncy ride, you will be pleased with the New Balance 890 v8.

 Very light, very breathable, very soft, very flexible in that upper construction. We've got a bit of reinforcement on the toe box to give you a bit of protection and a bit of durability. We've got a gusseted tongue in the shoe so to give you that nice secure mid-foot hold and the tongue has quite a unique design slightly tapered off so that tongue really wraps around the top of the shoe giving you a really nice sort of secure fit. As far as cushioning in the upper you've got a nice level of cushioning in the tongue not too thick not too light and a really nice level of padding around the heel collar

Fuelcell a disappointment

 You just want something, no bells and whistles to stick on, get out the door, have a look. I think this is a really, really good shoe. I think it's definitely worth looking at something like this versus like a Brooks Glycerine or Ghost or something like that. I think this is a great alternative and that's probably what sums it up for me guys

4 ounces is a great weight for that sort of middle distance shoe. And yeah, I just think for under £100 if you're looking for a middle distance sort of daily trainer, if you want something, like I said, you've got it on your plan, you've got to go and do 10k that day, 15, 20k. You just want something, no bells and whistles to stick on, get out the door, have a look. I think this is a really, really good shoe

 The fuel cell midsole, what I liked about it was I was quite comfortable going along at easy pace but then when I wanted to pick it up a bit, do a bit at goal marathon pace, it responded, got me up on my toes a little bit and I was pushing on, kicking on and it all felt very effortless, very comfortable. The ground in any way, but it is kind of making itself known that might kind of mellow out a little bit over the miles as like these flex, grooves start to break in, but for today it was kind of like a almost like a nice kind of Like not a guide rail but like a nice kind of little hint of stability in the forefoot that i thought was nice, because normally my foot kind of like lands a little bit on the side and kind of rolls in a little bit. This was kind of encouraging me to land a little bit more squarely on the foot which normally i don't like that feel. I usually feel like the shoe is fighting me when i get that sensation from a shoe, but here it was it wasn't too bad

 This was definitely a pleasure to run in today when i'm thinking about, like a long run shoe if i'm not reaching for a max cushion shoe. This is the kind of feel that i'm going to be reaching for and that i'm going to be looking for something. That'S also gon na get out of my way and just let me run and feel like i'm running the miles, if that it's not running them for me or that i'm not feeling like a bounce or a spring or a squish or any other kind of adjective There it just kind of really gets out of my way and lets me put in the miles and there's not a lot of shoes that are leaving me with that. So, in the sense it's almost a little bit of like a retro or a throwback shoe just feels like a great running shoe to run in

 Forefoot area of this shoe is a is very stiff and has actually given me a little bit of stability in terms of like this kind of like torsional rotation as i'm hitting the ground. So i'm definitely feeling that it's not biting me. It'S not making me slap.  Now this is a shoe. That'S not going to be coming out until a march of 2021, and so i normally wait till she's released before i review them, but this one i did get early, but that also means that i don't always get all like the stats and other information that i Normally like to report, so i'm not exactly sure what the stack heights are on this shoe. I think it's somewhere in the 30 millimeter range in the heel back here and that feels like a 10 millimeter drop. I think it's a 10 millimeter drop

 You know it's somebody who needs a neutral shoe is somebody who, when they're looking at a tread pattern on their shoe on a shoe without any guidance built into it, we're looking to see more wear pattern down the middle, or maybe some on the outside of the Shoe if you find that you're wearing your shoes - and you have a lot of a lot of wear pattern on the inside on the medial side, then you might need a shoe that has a little bit extra arch support. So for somebody who's wearing down the inside of their shoe, like that, i might say: hey, then you should you should try the 860., because the 860 has this little piece here. That has a little bit more density and a little bit more structure to it, designed to keep you from rolling too far on the inside

 Everything was right down the middle, because that means no matter what they were doing. We were able to counter it one way or the other and try to keep all your momentum in the middle and we've always found. If we can kind of keep you stable from the ground up then stuff, like your knees and your hips and everything kind of falls in line when you come in and all your wear is one way or the other, then maybe we need to do some sort Of adjustment on it, so this shoe is great for somebody who lose my shoes here, somebody who who wears takes a neutral shoe and they continue to wear more neutral or on the lateral side. But this shoe now the way i can feel that lateral support

 It'S the fresh foam because they're really trying to hit that home.. Hence it's softer. It'S a little bit more squishy compared to what we've seen before
