I’ve got them in my kitchen, made the conscious choice to go with powered speakers. They are great, especially for their price point.

Edifier is a very solid brand for SQ on a budget.  A friend had these exact pair, though I never got to hear them.  The phono pre on them died after a bit, so I'm not sure if that's something to be weary of.

But others are right that separates on a cheap amp will likely be a better long-term move for sequential upgrading.

If you're new to Edifier and are leaning toward buying them, check out their website. They often have sales during major holidays. Their refurbished section has some pretty great steals. I was brand new and bought a pair that way. Very happy with my current setup! There's some R2000's there for $200 refurbished. Note, they have base on the back of the speaker as opposed to the front I think.

I have them and they are literally perfect for pc use for me and as studio monitor alternatives because I have headphones for that too. These are super balanced, really warm, nice, crisp speakers. I have had worse hi-fi setups that were 4 times more expensive but older. Also the integrated eq knobs work really well to dial in your own preference and because of the forward facing bass ports you propably won't need a subwoofer.

These are meant to sit in front of you positioned towards your eats or at least in your general direction. If you need a room-filling banger speaker I recommend the Jam Audio Symphony wifi speaker. I have the exact same speakers and will buy them again. Perfect for my small home office while I’m working. I recommend checking Edifier refurbs (they have their own store on Amazon) which saved me $40, YMMV. Caveat, I wish I had skipped BT in order to get the model with sub outs.

These are good for listening in a small room at a moderate volume level. Also great for upgraded computer speakers. They are somewhat flat and the mids are just ok. Nice soundstage though. If you are trying to rock the house, look elsewhere.

Any opinions on these active bookshelf speakers and if pairing with a subwoofer would be a good choice? I have no experience with good audio equipment and budget is $230. Any help is appreciated.

  That said, the worst of the faults of this speaker can be improved with EQ and you end up with a remarkably good sounding, very detailed and clear, with absolutely incredible soundstage and imaging.  If you want to go the extra mile toward improving the audio from this, search for rubber or silicon lab stoppers to seal these ports. I think a size 7 stopper is proper. Please see the review from Erin's Audio Corner to explain the impact of this choice

Super Impressed and Happy with these.

 They are rated down to 50hz and they mean it. A sub is always better to have but if you don't have one, these will do well enough on their own. I've also noticed the bigger soundstage they produce. Everything is more lively and spacious

 The Neumi's are in a whole new league. Highs and mids are clear and have a nice crisp sparkle without being harsh and the bass these things can do is no joke.  For reference these replaced 4 cheap Auvio 6.5's that I purchased from Radio Shack 10 years ago for 40 bucks a pair, which apparently were wired out of phase from the factory and I had to open them and rewire. The Neumi's are in a whole new league. Highs and mids are clear and have a nice crisp sparkle without being harsh and the bass these things can do is no joke

Discovered these on a YouTube video speaker shootout. Advertised as a great bang for the buck. The fit and finish is nice. I'm running them with a vintage Technics receiver that I use for both Spotify through my television and an Audio Technica turntable

 This means it was connected up to a power amplifier. Most power amplifiers have a trigger connection on them. That will turn the amp on when it sees the trigger signal and off. When the trigger signal goes away

The Connect is an excellent combination of hardware and software that offers a plug-and-play solution for existing stereo systems.  Now the biggest difference between the Sonos connect and the Sonos connect amp is this device doesn't have speaker outputs? Okay, so this cannot drive a pair of speakers stand-alone. It has to have an amplifier, so you can connect this device to just a stereo amp and then some speakers. You can connect this to a receiver, a surround, sound receiver and then to your surround sound speakers. But this will not directly drive any speakers all right
