 I do tend to record sort of hot. I've got the gain at 45 dB right now, and I haven't boosted it at all in post, as I said. But the sensitivity on this thing is out of control. What that means is here in the cloistered studio environment, you are not going to find a better option for replicating every last detail and element of your vocal performance

 And that's a down payment on a car. But when you're thinking about serious high-end recording, maybe you think to yourself, well, I drive a car every day because if I'm going to drive a car every day, I want that to be a car that runs beautifully and is perfectly tuned and is going to be useful regardless of the driving conditions that I'm in. And if I'm going to be using it every day, it's going to be worth that initial outlay of money. So if you work in recording, maybe you want a microphone that fulfills a lot of those same characteristics

 This is the Avedis MA-5 that I am using. We're going line into a sound devices mix pre 6, which means we're not getting any sound devices tonality in the signal. It's just basically working as an analog to digital converter. When you record with the U87 in these very ideal circumstances, as you can hear, I hope you will agree, it sounds great

 So ends my first video on this channel. I am planning to do more of these. I've got a bunch of other microphones to make little sample videos of for you. And I've also got a number of analog preamps, which if you are interested in how these microphones and these preamps can work together to record really nice spoken word audio for radio and podcast, I am excited to share my observations on those processes with you

The Holy Grail? Neumann U87 Ai User Review

 Hi there. I'm Sam Dingman, the executive producer at WALTFM, which is not a real radio station,

 but rather the name that I came up with for my podcast, Production Company. And I'm talking

 to you from my whisper room here in Brooklyn, New York, and wanted to take a second to tell

 you about the Neumann U87 AI microphone, which you can see right here.

 I have been a gear nut for over ten years now, and when you start getting into high-end

 recording equipment, one of the first mics you start reading about, the legend of, is

 the U87. And you read about how it was used to track the vocals and the strings and other

 instruments on all of the most famous albums of the 70s and of particular interest to somebody

 like me who works in podcasting and radio. You quickly find out that it is the microphone

 of choice at NPR in all of their studios. It's what you hear most of their hosts speaking

 into when they read you the news in those calming, dulcet, yet somehow crisp and resonant

 tones. And so you read about the U87 and you start thinking, oh man, that's the holy grail.

 That's the point that I need to get to in my recording journey is where I'm making my

 And then you look up the price of the U87 and you have a heart attack, because if you

 have not done that before, please don't have a heart attack when I tell you this, but the

 Neumann U87 retails for upwards of $3,000. At last check, about $3,200 for the microphone

 itself. And if you want the full set that comes with the proprietary shock mount, which

 is it also adaptable? Can I find a lot of different uses for it? And is there anything

 Well, so it took me a long time to get one, many, many years of saving up. But as soon

 as I did, I told myself, now that you have this, you've got to use this on every single

 vocal tracking session that you conduct because you wanted it for so long and you saved up

 so much money for it. Obviously, you've got to use it every time out.

 And what I found is that the Neumann U87, while it sounds great in an environment like

 this, a whisper room with some acoustic foam on the wall and some nice isolation, run through

 a very nice analog mic pre. This is the Avedis MA-5 that I am using. We're going line into

 a sound devices mix pre 6, which means we're not getting any sound devices tonality in

 the signal. It's just basically working as an analog to digital converter.

 When you record with the U87 in these very ideal circumstances, as you can hear, I hope

 you will agree, it sounds great. It's not terribly harsh in any particular register

 of the voice. It's very, very firm and resonant in the mids, but it's not boomy. The proximity

 effect is not extreme. You can see me moving closer to it now, and you get a little bit

 of proximity effect, but not very much. When you back away from it, you still get a nice

 sound. And critically, you will notice I am not using a pop filter or a windscreen here.

 And as I speak and pronounce words that have Ps and Bs in them, you're not getting the

 blasting plosive sounds that so many other large diaphragm condenser mics, of which this

 is one, will hit you with. That's pretty remarkable. And I should say that's not happening because

 as you can see, I've got it about 45 degrees off axis from my mouth, and I am a few inches

 away from it, which in my experience tends to be the best position for working with large

 diaphragm condensers. So in these idealized conditions, yes, this is the holy grail. And

 I also want to stipulate, I don't know if you can see right here, the Neumann U87 comes

 with a high-pass filter or a low-end roll-off. People use different terms for that, but they

 basically mean the same thing. I'm not cutting out the low-end rumble in my voice. I prefer

 to do that in post-production, of which, by the way, there is none of on this video. You're
