 Hi there, this is Andre from On One Acoustics, today we are going to talk about the U47 Neumann clone that we did and our experience with it. We are not going to post any audio or video clips, this is just a review on the microphone itself. So we bought a microphone from Mic Mod, there were some good positive points and some bad positive points. I think for the price of the microphone, which is around 1000 euros, it is a fantastic microphone

 The microphone needs a special 7 pin cable, so you need a special cable that comes with the package and some of the not so great positive points was the component, so me and the electrical engineer that mounted the microphone, we had to change a couple of caps and condensers for better quality, but the rest of the microphone is fantastic, all the other electronic components are great quality, apart from the small condensers that we had changed. So resuming this video for 1000 euros, this is a great microphone to have in your own studio. Hope you have enjoyed the video and stay tuned for more updates.

During the final mixing session, the mix engineer asked me what interface I used &amp; explained to me — "*I should use a better interface with better D/A converters &amp; use a dedicated preamp when using top class gear. Even using a dedicated preamp which then runs into the Focusrite A/D converters, would lower the quality" —* That it's not worth using high class gear if It is interfaced through something cheap or low quality. What's the truth to this?

Using a cheap audio interface with expensive preamps / microphones?

 The term industry standard kind of comes to me when I've thought about this mic a little bit. You see, every time I've ever used one, it's always been in one of two places. It's either been in front of a kick drum or in front of a bass cab. So, when the opportunity to review this mic came up, I thought to myself, I wonder what else it's gonna sound cool on

 It doesn't require a lot of compression because somehow the proximity effect in conjunction with the presence of the microphone just allows the guitar to sit in a really comfortable place. Obviously, that's got a lot to do with how it's played as well. The biggest thing that was the most surprising to me, which it shouldn't have been because there's the number 47 in the title of this microphone's name, is vocals. Using this microphone on male vocals has given me really great results

 It's either been in front of a kick drum or in front of a bass cab. So, when the opportunity to review this mic came up, I thought to myself, I wonder what else it's gonna sound cool on. I wasn't really prepared for the results that I got. Putting this microphone above the bass drum, pointing towards the snare drum, kind of, you know, three quarters of the way over the bass drum, with a hefty dose of compression, gives me this stunning punch without any sibilance or harshness

 Pairing this microphone with an API mic pre and the API 550A EQs with the filter switch turned on and a little bit of 200Hz knocked off in the shelf. The representation of that acoustic guitar, and I have done it several times since, has been absolutely mind-blowingly good. It doesn't require a lot of compression because somehow the proximity effect in conjunction with the presence of the microphone just allows the guitar to sit in a really comfortable place. Obviously, that's got a lot to do with how it's played as well

 I do tend to record sort of hot. I've got the gain at 45 dB right now, and I haven't boosted it at all in post, as I said. But the sensitivity on this thing is out of control. What that means is here in the cloistered studio environment, you are not going to find a better option for replicating every last detail and element of your vocal performance

 And that's a down payment on a car. But when you're thinking about serious high-end recording, maybe you think to yourself, well, I drive a car every day because if I'm going to drive a car every day, I want that to be a car that runs beautifully and is perfectly tuned and is going to be useful regardless of the driving conditions that I'm in. And if I'm going to be using it every day, it's going to be worth that initial outlay of money. So if you work in recording, maybe you want a microphone that fulfills a lot of those same characteristics

 This is the Avedis MA-5 that I am using. We're going line into a sound devices mix pre 6, which means we're not getting any sound devices tonality in the signal. It's just basically working as an analog to digital converter. When you record with the U87 in these very ideal circumstances, as you can hear, I hope you will agree, it sounds great

 So ends my first video on this channel. I am planning to do more of these. I've got a bunch of other microphones to make little sample videos of for you. And I've also got a number of analog preamps, which if you are interested in how these microphones and these preamps can work together to record really nice spoken word audio for radio and podcast, I am excited to share my observations on those processes with you

The Holy Grail? Neumann U87 Ai User Review

Example, you can take the Neumann u87 and re-create the same signal with an Eq for the NT1 and it’ll sound very, very close to the actual Neumann U87. It’s a very versatile mic, great quality, and won’t KO your wallet.

i’ve had my Rhode microphone for a while now, i have it setup at home, i record vocals with it, often singing/rapping. At the start i noticed the mic was very bright, to the point it’s just too harsh, the mids and the highs are way too sharp.

I have the mic connected to a behringer umc22 (i know this is like the cheapest interface you can buy but i’m working on a budget) and this goes into my laptop, straight into fruity loops.

i used to be able to deal with it, and the person who mixes my tracks also could deal with it. but i’ve used other microphones and the difference within the final track is very noticeable. i’m tempted to buy a new microphone, but first i wanted to post this to see if there was any solutions.

Problem with the Rode NT1-A

 This is about 4,500 in Canada. This one's about 500 in Canada. One 10th the price, give or take. Now we have the TechZone Audio Products Stellar X2 versus the Neumann U87 AI

 And here we get to prove that the specs are not the most important thing on a microphone. This is a condenser microphone with the cardioid, omni and figure eight polar patterns. It's 20 Hertz to 20 kilohertz. It has an SPL of 117 DB or 127 DB with the pad enabled

 Smells good, right? It was a thing, and it would perfectly explain the differences. But I don't know about you, I would rather not have that on my mic. I mean, it is a Neumann. It's built like a tank, but you should probably not be rough with it because it's a month's salary for a decent career

 I mean, once again, of course, this is good. There's a reason it's in every studio that's worth its salt, but it does beg another question. Do you need this microphone if you're in voiceover or starting your own studio? No. In fact, I saw a post the other day of actors reading lines for a Disney movie and they were using a Rode NT1
