JBL Synthesis System, a dream come true

 I settled on mounting the MP-110 on the Audio Technica AT-LP1240, and its VTA is as versatile as they come. On the AT-LP1240, it’s at approximately 85% of its peak height. This took a ton of trial and error and was a complete pain, as you would expect. Finally, this cart can be a bit edgy on the treble, especially with female artists, but I think it’s more closely associated with a proper VTA setting than anything else

I’ve been using this cartridge for almost two months now and I can happily report that this is a great cartridge, especially considering its cost. I have broken it in using a combination of three different turntables, three different phono preamps, and three different integrated amps.  This is the gear I’ve used:  Turntables: Audio Technica AT-LP1240 U-Turn Orbit Teac TN-550  Phono Preamps: Parks Audio Budgie Tube Phono Preamp U-Turn Pluto Phono Preamp Cambridge CP2 Phono Preamp  Integrated Amps: Outlaw Audio RR2150 NAD c352 Kenwood KA-7300  In addition, these are the cartridges I own and used for comparison: Ortofon 2M Bronze ($440) Ortofon 2M Red ($100) Grado Prestige Gold ($260) Audio Technica AT95E ($45) Audio Technica AT440MLb ($200)  And yes, I have tried every single combination of the components – and yes, it took forever (months). Overall, I would consider the Nagaoka MP-110 my second favorite cartridge of the six I own regardless of price – second only to the Ortofon Bronze, which costs $300 more

 The Nagaoka produces a very pleasant sound, and for every genre of music I threw at it. In addition, it handles surface noise as well as a cartridge possibly can, in my opinion. The MP-110 tends to handle older records and/or poor vinyl pressings very well. It’s also a solid tracker

While not perfect, a very good cartridge at a fantastic price -- definitely recommended

 There is such a spectrum of price points, that I thought going for lower of the middle of the pack would yield good results, and I am pleased so far. Although I have had great luck with the Grado Blacks I have used in the past and was considering getiing a Grado Green or Blue, this cartridge was a decent purchase for the price, and really seems to be a good value. I'm sure there is more breaking-in to do, but right away I was happy with the tracking, clarity, and stereo separation. I'm just listing to records, not back queuing or scratching, so this seems like a decent choice for quality while being able to save some $$ to buy more records :)

Great Investment For The Price

The Nagaoka is a mellow sounding cartridge with a forward, slightly harsh, midrange, significant midbass hump (but rolled-off deep bass), and slightly harsh highs. The sound is definitely not flat, and the exaggeration of certain frequency while muting of others makes it sound quite colored. However, at low volume levels, is more listenable than other, more accurate $100 cartridges such as the Shure M97, or the 2Mred. If you like accurate sound, this is not it

 Mating it with the correct phono stage is important. Some phono stages, like the Emotiva, also have a slightly forward midrange and would not mate with the Nagaoka. However, more restrained phono stages, such as Pro-Jects or Schiit Mani would be a good match.

But you’ll get better vfm with a stylus upgrade. If you bought your Evo in the US then it came with the Sumiko Rainier installed, which can be upgraded with an Olympia ($120) or Moonstone (€220) stylus; in EUrp it came with the Ortofon 2M Red which can be upgraded with the 2M Blue (€140) stylus; and even the Bronze (€215) or Black (€350) stylus would fit although there is a difference between the Red/Blue cartridge body and the Bronze/Black.

It's more than fine, you have a balanced setup. Unless u purely only listen to vinyl, perhaps a DAC for bluetooth/tv?

Save up for better speakers first, then upgrade the amp, leave the phonostage for last as it's a lot of money for very little improvement.

Preamp or not?

My records are all mint, very clean. I've set the proper tracking force and I'm using a new Sumiko Rainier cartridge with less than 5 hours of play on it. It appears clean and staight, not damaged.

r/audiophile Shopping, Setup, and Technical Help Desk Thread

 It has a nice warm sound but also does a nice job highlighting highs right out of the box.  The Sumiko Rainier can be easily upgraded using either the Olympia Stylus or the more expensive Moonstone Stylus. Both options come at more expensive price levels but present a good upgrade path.

This cartridge should be in consideration if you’re considering purchasing the Ortofon 2M Red, Nagaoka MP110, or one of the ~$150 USD Technics Microline carts. Wow! What an improvement. As with anything audio related, your mileage may vary! I upgraded from the Sumiko Oyster on my Pro-ject 1-Xpression that is being run through a Kenwood KA-7100 and piped out of a pair of KEF Q350 speakers.  The immediate difference in sound quality in comparison to the oyster is night and day
