JBL Synthesis System, a dream come true

 I settled on mounting the MP-110 on the Audio Technica AT-LP1240, and its VTA is as versatile as they come. On the AT-LP1240, it’s at approximately 85% of its peak height. This took a ton of trial and error and was a complete pain, as you would expect. Finally, this cart can be a bit edgy on the treble, especially with female artists, but I think it’s more closely associated with a proper VTA setting than anything else

I’ve been using this cartridge for almost two months now and I can happily report that this is a great cartridge, especially considering its cost. I have broken it in using a combination of three different turntables, three different phono preamps, and three different integrated amps.  This is the gear I’ve used:  Turntables: Audio Technica AT-LP1240 U-Turn Orbit Teac TN-550  Phono Preamps: Parks Audio Budgie Tube Phono Preamp U-Turn Pluto Phono Preamp Cambridge CP2 Phono Preamp  Integrated Amps: Outlaw Audio RR2150 NAD c352 Kenwood KA-7300  In addition, these are the cartridges I own and used for comparison: Ortofon 2M Bronze ($440) Ortofon 2M Red ($100) Grado Prestige Gold ($260) Audio Technica AT95E ($45) Audio Technica AT440MLb ($200)  And yes, I have tried every single combination of the components – and yes, it took forever (months). Overall, I would consider the Nagaoka MP-110 my second favorite cartridge of the six I own regardless of price – second only to the Ortofon Bronze, which costs $300 more

 The Nagaoka produces a very pleasant sound, and for every genre of music I threw at it. In addition, it handles surface noise as well as a cartridge possibly can, in my opinion. The MP-110 tends to handle older records and/or poor vinyl pressings very well. It’s also a solid tracker

While not perfect, a very good cartridge at a fantastic price -- definitely recommended

 There is such a spectrum of price points, that I thought going for lower of the middle of the pack would yield good results, and I am pleased so far. Although I have had great luck with the Grado Blacks I have used in the past and was considering getiing a Grado Green or Blue, this cartridge was a decent purchase for the price, and really seems to be a good value. I'm sure there is more breaking-in to do, but right away I was happy with the tracking, clarity, and stereo separation. I'm just listing to records, not back queuing or scratching, so this seems like a decent choice for quality while being able to save some $$ to buy more records :)

Great Investment For The Price

The Nagaoka is a mellow sounding cartridge with a forward, slightly harsh, midrange, significant midbass hump (but rolled-off deep bass), and slightly harsh highs. The sound is definitely not flat, and the exaggeration of certain frequency while muting of others makes it sound quite colored. However, at low volume levels, is more listenable than other, more accurate $100 cartridges such as the Shure M97, or the 2Mred. If you like accurate sound, this is not it

 Mating it with the correct phono stage is important. Some phono stages, like the Emotiva, also have a slightly forward midrange and would not mate with the Nagaoka. However, more restrained phono stages, such as Pro-Jects or Schiit Mani would be a good match.

First piece of the puzzle was choosing a TT. I've decided to go with the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO ($500). Working my way from source to speakers, the next component I'm researching is the phono preamp. As mentioned in other posts, I'm aiming to spend the money necessary to get a solid system that's enjoyable out of the box and doesn't *need* upgrades, unless I descend into hardcore hobbyist territory. I'd also like to separate my phono preamp from my receiver, so no built-in there please. As far as I understand it, I don't wanna "choke" my system by buying something low quality, but I'm sure there's a threshold of overkill that I also don't need to enter into. Tubes... maybe down the road. Also, planning on spending $2–400 on the amp and $3–500 on speakers. 

What I'm considering, plus notes:

* Pro-Ject Phono Box S2 Ultra ($299)
* Hagerman Bugle 3 ($200) lowkey love the way this one looks
* Pro-Ject Phono Box S2 ($200)
* NAD Electronics PP 2e ($190)
* Cambridge Audio Solo ($180) ... MM only! Or upgrade to the Duo ($300) to future proof MM/MC?
* Rega Fono Mini A2D MKII ($175). Multiple recommendations. Applicable above, I also saw that cartridge specific can sometimes be better, and this falls in line with that—MM support but not MC.
* Music Hall Mini Plus ($150)
* Schiit Mani ($150). A lot of mentions about radio interference has me scared on this one, despite a lot of glowing reviews.
* U-turn Orbit Pluto 2 ($100)
*  ART DJ PreII ($66) Honestly weirds me out how good some of the reviews are for this one. Biggest knock is that it's subjectively ugly AF lol, but if it holds up to pricier units then why the hell not?

Also mentioned previously—feel free to tell my priorities are not in order. I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Phono preamp suggestion for a $1,500 system

 Good balanced sound. 2. High output; I am using this with a Bell 2199B integrated amplifier that has a low gain phono section. The 5mV / 5cm/Sec output level provides enough oomph for my system

Higher tracking force; My Garrard RC 88/4 is an older record changer that does not work well with tracking forces less than about 5 grams

 The sound is balanced, top to bottom and sounds as good as or better than the Shure M7D, I was using before. It seems to track the grooves without fail. The SC35C sound also compares favorably to my GE VR, Pickering NP/AC and Model 380 Stanton Stereo Fluxvalve cartridges.  What I like about the Shure SC35C: 1

  I installed the SC35C in a spare headshell and loaded the assembly onto my Garrard RC 88/4 tonearm. After playing several records, I conclude that this cartridge is a winner.  This was an easy choice, since it was a $19 upgrade. This cartridge needs to break in a bit, but it is already infinitely better than trying to play microgroove MONO! records with a super-thin stylus. I'm EXTREMELY happy with this purchase.
