JBL Synthesis System, a dream come true

 I settled on mounting the MP-110 on the Audio Technica AT-LP1240, and its VTA is as versatile as they come. On the AT-LP1240, it’s at approximately 85% of its peak height. This took a ton of trial and error and was a complete pain, as you would expect. Finally, this cart can be a bit edgy on the treble, especially with female artists, but I think it’s more closely associated with a proper VTA setting than anything else

I’ve been using this cartridge for almost two months now and I can happily report that this is a great cartridge, especially considering its cost. I have broken it in using a combination of three different turntables, three different phono preamps, and three different integrated amps.  This is the gear I’ve used:  Turntables: Audio Technica AT-LP1240 U-Turn Orbit Teac TN-550  Phono Preamps: Parks Audio Budgie Tube Phono Preamp U-Turn Pluto Phono Preamp Cambridge CP2 Phono Preamp  Integrated Amps: Outlaw Audio RR2150 NAD c352 Kenwood KA-7300  In addition, these are the cartridges I own and used for comparison: Ortofon 2M Bronze ($440) Ortofon 2M Red ($100) Grado Prestige Gold ($260) Audio Technica AT95E ($45) Audio Technica AT440MLb ($200)  And yes, I have tried every single combination of the components – and yes, it took forever (months). Overall, I would consider the Nagaoka MP-110 my second favorite cartridge of the six I own regardless of price – second only to the Ortofon Bronze, which costs $300 more

 The Nagaoka produces a very pleasant sound, and for every genre of music I threw at it. In addition, it handles surface noise as well as a cartridge possibly can, in my opinion. The MP-110 tends to handle older records and/or poor vinyl pressings very well. It’s also a solid tracker

 There is such a spectrum of price points, that I thought going for lower of the middle of the pack would yield good results, and I am pleased so far. Although I have had great luck with the Grado Blacks I have used in the past and was considering getiing a Grado Green or Blue, this cartridge was a decent purchase for the price, and really seems to be a good value. I'm sure there is more breaking-in to do, but right away I was happy with the tracking, clarity, and stereo separation. I'm just listing to records, not back queuing or scratching, so this seems like a decent choice for quality while being able to save some $$ to buy more records :)

Great Investment For The Price

The Nagaoka is a mellow sounding cartridge with a forward, slightly harsh, midrange, significant midbass hump (but rolled-off deep bass), and slightly harsh highs. The sound is definitely not flat, and the exaggeration of certain frequency while muting of others makes it sound quite colored. However, at low volume levels, is more listenable than other, more accurate $100 cartridges such as the Shure M97, or the 2Mred. If you like accurate sound, this is not it

 Mating it with the correct phono stage is important. Some phono stages, like the Emotiva, also have a slightly forward midrange and would not mate with the Nagaoka. However, more restrained phono stages, such as Pro-Jects or Schiit Mani would be a good match.

 If you're looking for a really great-sounding cartridge under two hundred bucks, my advice is to skip this Shure and go straight for the Audio Technica. The AT440MLa has been discontinued, but its successor, the Audio Technica AT440MLB, is nearly identical and supposedly even better-sounding:Audio-Technica AT440MLB Phonograph Cartridge Trust me, your ears will thank you.

An o.k. cartridge for the price, but there are better choices...

  Take my advice with a grain of salt, though. I may not be as discerning as you. I recently installed a lowly Pfanstiehl M-29 on this same deck, which is a spherical needle, and it sounds very, very good. That cartridge costs--wait for it 

 $15. I even ran it on my Shure Audio Obstacle Course Era III lp and it scored extremely well--tracked all but the very harshest level 5 tracks. The Shure M97xE tracks all with competent aplomb and the AT-440mla certainly tracked the best of them all, but none of those did as well or sounded as good as my Ortofon 320U on the WORST tracks. The 320U, incidentally, used to be available for $80 and is now priced where you can find it somewhere in the $200-$300 range due to it being discontinued

I swear, in the audiophile world, a cartridge and needle combination is sought that will track lps that have been buried in the sand, have had a blow-torch run over them, then run over by a garbage truck, shaped into a salad bowl by a reclaimed materials artist and then pressed flat again by a vinyl enthusiast and a $20,000 cartridge will be expected to play that beat up record with unbelievable clarity, precision, timing, a deep soundstage that makes the listener feel as though he/she is "really there," and with no listening fatigue at all; all the better if that lp is played on a turntable that costs at least $5,000 and tonearm that costs an additional $800 with oxygen free wires that cost another $100--and we haven't even gotten into phono stage, amp, and speakers (and wires), not to mention which freaking capacitors, and whether tubes or solid state

For the price, buy two or three instead of the AT-440mla

 So again, why do I think this cartridge is overpriced? Well, I purchased mine in late 2016, early 2017, I believe. I paid $87 for it. I bought two replacement styli for $59 each. And I've seen replacement styli selling for roughly $200, give or take

 And so if this is such a good sounding cartridge, why would I recommend, in my opinion, you purchase something else? Well, in order to discuss that, we need to take a look at the selling habits of eBay sellers and Amazon sellers. I've seen this cartridge selling for as little as $200 on eBay to, oh, about $369 for a used one. And on Amazon, I've actually seen it selling for as much as $429, $430. So why the big difference? Well, again, we need to look at the selling habits of eBay vendors and Amazon vendors

 Now, on with the review. As I mentioned, this will be a brief review of the Shure M97XE phono cartridge, and brief because this cartridge has been out since about 1997, at least, as I could tell from the information available on the internet. It's a very good cartridge, very well-rounded, very good sound. It has a frequency response of 20,000 Hz to 22,000 kHz

 Again, the bass was very tight, mid-range was good, but the treble was rolled off. There wasn't quite as much treble as I would like, but I thought that's just the way it goes. Now, the benefit of the treble not being too harsh or in your face is it's a very listenable cartridge. You can use this cartridge for hours and not have any fatigue

Shure M97XE Review

  Many helpful internet vinylphiles insist my particular cartridge is defective, and with this in mind I've contacted Shure twice to no avail - this despite having the receipt and having bought from an authorized dealer. Not cool, Shure.  In short, this highly regarded budget cartridge seriously let me down. It does have a pleasant sound, but it's not the easy budget hi-fi cartridge it's made out to be

EDIT - 10/19/10 Just received a fresh M97xe from Amazon. Despite my negative experience from earlier, enough people on AudioKarma, VinylEngine, and all the other big sites swore this was the cart to beat under $100, so I gave it another shot. In short - they were all right! My initial cartridge/stylus must have been defective as this new model with only 3 hours on it is excelling my earlier sample in HF extension, imaging, bass impact, and every other criteria imaginable. Now I see what all the fuss is about

  In short, this highly regarded budget cartridge seriously let me down. It does have a pleasant sound, but it's not the easy budget hi-fi cartridge it's made out to be. My easy recommendation is the Audio-Technica AT95E which does provide most of the hi-fi sound for around the same price as this Shure cartridge. If the AT's particular detailed, involving flavor puts you off, Grado's black and green are also wonderful cartridges more in line with the Shure's warmth that might work better with your gear if you have these problems

EDIT - New cartridge addresses all my complaints, raises QC concerns!

2 mil spec told me this stylus should be doing a super job of sampling subtle sound information in the record's groove walls. So if the stylus is finding the sound information, I asked, why am I not hearing it? Another spec, for tracking force, told me this cartridge can be used as low as .75 grams (however Shure's optimum tracking force is 1.25 grams)

 The curtain suppressing high frequency sounds parted and I began hearing cymbals and subtle sounds at levels comparable with other Shure cartridges I have to use (M75, M95). When tracking force was increased to the factory optimum 1.25 grams this openness began to disappear. I am being cautious about going lighter

 Many reviewers had said the M97xE was a good tracking cartridge, and there was that low factory .75 gram limit on tracking force, so I decided to try some lighter tracking experiments with my M97xE on my Technics SL-1210. Long story short, with my phonograph, the Grado headphones, and my hearing, at around 1.1 grams the M97xE changed it's personality
