However, this isn't the most aggressive tire on the market. You may prefer another option if you often find yourself riding in loose or wet conditions. While the medium-height tread is efficient and capable for most situations, there are better options for braking traction when the terrain gets super loose. hey there I need to get a new rear tire and im debating between the Maxxis ardent in a 2.4, the Maxxis Rekon 2.4, and the Maxxis aggressor 2.3. my bike is 130 front 130 rear so I do a large variety of riding but I end up doing a lot of road riding in-between trails because I live on an island near seattle and we don't have the best mountain bike trails unless you go off island. which one would you suggest for that? I can't decide. thanks!

rear tire suggestion?

  Update: I have had this rear tire on for a year now. It still has adequate tread. Note that I ride only about 20 miles a week and rarely does the tire touch asphalt. I remain overly satisfied with this tire

 When I recieved the tire I immediately mounted it tubeless,using some Stans Sealant. The bead set really well. I was on the local single tracks about an hour later. Here where I live in PA, we have a variety of trail conditions and this tire held up well on all of them

Great all around mountain tire

Something like Maxxis Aggressor or Minion SS in cheap versions. I commute 13km one way and I put a bit more pressure in than normal. That was good enough for me. No hassle to swap wheels etc

Quick. There are 29er pavement tires but the thought of swapping tires back to trail ones every ride seems like a royal pain in the ass. So i was thinking of just getting a pair of cheap wheels for commuting that always have road tires and quickly swapping the whole wheel when i hit the trails. Thoughts?

Second pair of beater wheels for commuting?

 I can't imagine it will be any worse than my Minion SS, but I'll update with that info later. Regardless, this will definitely be my rear tire of choice from now on.

 There is a super slight increase in rolling resistance versus the Minion SS, but this comes with very marked improvement in uphill grip, and even more braking improvement. I was literally blown away the first time I braked in loose stuff at speed with this tire - I almost couldn't get the rear wheel to lock up. All this with no loss in cornering proficiency. Durability is also fantastic

 I previously had a Minion SS and honestly didn't think I could do much better. I was sacrificing a little grip both uphill and while braking, but it rolled and cornered so well I didn't mind. It was a tough sell for me to buy this tire honestly, but I decided to give it a try for this price.

Best Rear Tire on the Market?

Love these! I've put nearly 300 miles on them so far, and they are barely shoeing wear. I ride very hard and rely heavily on the traction of my tires. These are even more enjoyable than my maxxis high roller 2 (and I've beat the ish out of those!) the extra weight on the tires is absolutely worth it. In my sloppy line choices down hill through gnarly, tire shredding rocks, these sidewalls still are not leaking fluid out of them and they are holding pressure perfectly! They popped on my easton arc 30 rim so tightly and so easy! I plan on ordering another set for my emergency gear stock pile! I would love to see maxxis offer a 2

The Specialized Ground Control Grid T7 is a tire that bridges the gap between cross-country and trail riding, call it down-country if you like. This lightweight model tips the scales at just 867 grams in a 29" x 2.35" size, contributing to their zippy feel. Like most cross-country tires, they are very fast rolling, but unlike a typical XC tire, they provide better cornering and braking traction than you might expect. The tread consists of lots of moderate-height lugs in the center and intermediate zone, with a fairly substantial row of shoulder knobs. We found it provides excellent cornering traction across the spectrum of lean angles in all but the loosest of conditions. The tread design also contributes to controlled and predictable braking performance that outshines other models in its category. The T7 rubber compound offers a nice blend of grip and longevity, and the Grid casing feels relatively robust and durable while remaining lightweight.
While we were truly impressed by the performance of the Ground Control Grid T7, it is important to keep in mind that these tires do have limitations. Given this tire's impressive rolling speed and moderate height/relatively tightly packed tread knobs, it can't compete with more aggressive tires in loose conditions. Likewise, while the Grid casing feels fairly tough for an XC-ish tire, it's a little under-gunned for super rough and chunky trails. That said, we feel it is an excellent option for aggressive cross-country and light trail riding for riders seeking a lightweight and fast-rolling tire for their down-country rig.
