I'm an inveterate fudd, and have no emotional investment in any of these newfangled semiautos, so you can be sure I'm not coming at this from any fanboyism:  the AR-10 is the definitive, obvious choice for a .30 caliber practical semiauto rifle. The M1A and FAL are options only if you're so deeply in love with those platforms that you just feel you need to have one (in which case you know what's for you already), but unless you're at the mercy of nonrational compulsions, just get a modern AR-10. It's the default option for a reason

So I am looking for a new rifle to hunt pest control with. This is to deal with wild pigs, and I normally shot bolt action 25 06, used to shoot a 3006 browning semi auto, and I want another semi auto. I really liked that browning BAR, but the 4 round capacity hindered me every once in a while. Wasn't too common but atleast 3 times a year I would come across a heard and wished I had more rounds or change able magazines. 

So I am looking for a new rifle to shoot, I've been back and forth on 5.56 vs 3006, but with the range I normally shoot at 3006 is a better choice for me. Now I am going back and fourth on 3006 vs 308, which leaves me with a selection of rifles to choose from. I do want semi auto again, and preferably something that can do rapid fire reliably. 

I have come down to three rifles/platforms and just havnt decided which after 4 months. First choice is the M1A or a 3006 M14 from china and polishing/tuning it up. Next is the Ar10/308 platform. Lastly the FAL or a close variant. 

What do people think? The longest I'll shoot out to is 500 yards. It also need to mag dump reliably, this is my main reason sticking to military style rifles. Anyone have experiance pushing these rifles out to this range? The only one of these I have fored before is a vietnam era M14 but these weren't great even conpaired against modern chinese knock offs. I was able to hit a 200 yard plate, but it was shooting all over. I have always liked the look of a FAL more than the AR platform but the ARs parts variety does intrigue me. If I dont get an AR 10 I will be getting a AR15 sometime in the future but atleast not for a while as I have already spent my fun money for the next few years buying a small collection of historic rifles.

What do people think for which gun I should get?

 Springfield Armory was kind enough to send us both a National Match M1A and a SOCOM 16 to try out for ourselves, and we hoped that by the end, we'd have enough insight to give you a reasonable everyman's opinion, considering that you have folks claiming that these are sub-MOA guns at 1,000 yards with iron sights on one side of the debate and some nerd that won't shut up about how the US should have adopted the FAL over the M14 on the other. The National Match M1A is, according to Springfield, hand-built to win competitions. The gun's action is glass-bedded into the walnut stock, which overcomes the traditional issue M14s face with poor fitment apparently affecting accuracy. The guns also got a five pound two-stage trigger

25 inch group with the national match using iron sights. Blaming the problem squarely on irons doesn't feel right either, although it probably should be stated that the guy who's the lead tech at Springfield is likely a goddamn pro at M1A's. So we sort of deliberated on what sort of angle that we even wanted to take for this review because the results are so inconclusive. What the fuck? It would have been really easy to just pretend that all of the weird accuracy stuff never happened, but that's really disingenuous and we try to be as real as possible with y'all

So this is a gas operated just like a Garand just gets gas operated. I got my big rod right here Goes all the way you can see it moving the rod moving You know, it's about 44 inches long 22 inch barrel Nine point something pounds This is you know, it's a hefty rifle safety down here in the trigger guard just like a Garand down here in the trigger guard Takes disassembles just like a Garand roll it over and you just pop this out and pull this whole thing out Comes apart real easy It does have even on here where I can use the stripper clips

 I love the recoil on it Now just because I like to play hard and play big i'm gonna stick this big bastard in there. Accuracy is more than adequate for pretty much any purpose you want, plinking, running guns, hunting, the 10-22, if you're a good shooter will get it done, you can always improve on it, there's a Tactical Solutions barrel, this is under high winds by the way, that was this year, January 2009, first time with a TacSol barrel CCI, could have done better, but that is high winds, I have clips of that, in fact that might even show you right now, I'll go ahead and embed one, you can see me shooting that, pretty decent. Accuracy on the 10-22 on par with any other 22 rifle out there, I really think that it stacks up quite nicely
