As a fellow SKS guy , I strongly recommend going with the 10 rounder and clips. It's hard to load at first and likes to slice ungloved hands but I promise you can get pretty fast with it and it starts to be the most fun part of shooting the thing after you practice a lot.

Rifle Help in communist Massachusetts

I actually think the SKS is your best option. 7.62x39 is good for plinking is a fine prepper rifle and is fine for hunting medium game at reasonable distances. Another option I chose is a lever action in 357/38. Can plink or small game hunt with 38 specials and use 357 for defense and to hunt medium game within 100 yards or so.
