The best 42-inch TV we've tested is the LG OLED42C2PUA. It's a fantastic TV that delivers stunning picture quality, especially in dark rooms, thanks to its near-infinite contrast ratio. Its OLED panel delivers perfect black uniformity, with no distracting blooming or haloing around bright objects in dark scenes. It's fantastic for a variety of uses, including if you want to use the smaller size as a PC monitor, and its wide viewing angle is great for use as a PC monitor, as the sides of the screen remain uniform even if you're sitting close to the screen. You can also easily share your screen with someone else, and they'll see the same thing you do.

It has great accuracy even without calibration, resulting in life-like images without the added expense of having to calibrate. HDR content looks excellent thanks to the near-infinite contrast and its color gamut that displays a wide range of colors. It also has decent HDR peak brightness to make some highlights stand out, but if peak brightness is important to you, the Samsung QN90B QLED is a 43-inch TV that gets even brighter but doesn't produce the same perfect black levels, so the LG is better overall.

If you want something a bit bigger than the Samsung Q60/Q60A QLED, the best 42-Inch TV we've tested is the LG OLED42C2PUA. This TV delivers remarkable performance compared to other small models. There are LED options with a 43-inch screen like the Gigabyte AORUS FV43U, and there are slightly larger OLEDs at 48 inches. The advantage these sizes bring you is that they maintain the typical 16:9 aspect ratio, meaning you won't get black bars on the side in certain games like with an ultrawide.

There are a few downsides to this screen size, though. They tend to be expensive, and there aren't many models available, but they're growing in popularity. Also, these monitors don't usually have good ergonomics as they come with fixed stands, so it's harder to move the screen around to share with a friend for co-op gaming unless you have the desk space to move the entire monitor.

 Like other Sony TVs, the 888 uses Sony's Acoustic Surface Audio, which is just a fancy way of saying it vibrates the screen to produce sound. This actually works quite well and has a good frequency response with little compression at max volume. However, it does lack low and sub bass that you'd find in dedicated room speakers or a sound bar. The microphone in the remote can automatically adjust the frequency response of the TV based off the acoustics of the room, which is a nice touch

 With game mode enabled, we measured an input lag of around 18.5ms in most scenarios. Outside of game mode, it jumps up to 93ms in 4K and 110ms in 1080p, so make sure you turn on game mode if you want to have a responsive experience. Unfortunately, as mentioned earlier, this TV doesn't support variable refresh rate, which may be disappointing to some

 You may notice there aren't any HDMI 2.1 ports, which is disappointing considering competing models like the LG CX do support it, although it doesn't matter too much here since the TV doesn't support VRR or 4K at 120Hz, some of the main features of HDMI 2. Now onto input lag, which is important for gaming as you want the TV to feel responsive to your inputs. This TV has low input lag and is a great improvement over last year's 8AG, which is slower by about 10-30ms

Honestly not trying to be a jerk, but you’ve got way more TV than you need based on your current devices. If you don’t upgrade those, I’d recommend exchanging the tv for a standard LED and save over a thousand dollars.

I recently purchased a Sony Bravia a80j OLED TV. It works great for streaming services and the picture is in 4K. But my DVD player and DirecTV satellite box only display a picture with 2k resolution. This wasn’t an issue with my last TV, so I don’t know how to fix it. Can anyone help?

How to get 4K resolution on Sony Bravia a80j

1 gaming features, such as 4K at 120Hz, ALLM or variable refresh rate, which may put off gamers who have an eye on next-gen consoles launching at the end of the year. A quick word on the acoustic surface audio system consisting of two actuators whose vibrations turn the entire screen into speakers. Sony has put twin subwoofers on the Bravia A8, which improved bass response but muddied mid-range resolution a touch. Nonetheless, the acoustic surface speakers on the A8 still ranked as very good for a flat-panel television, with the precise sound localisation to the picture on screen being a particular highlight

 Switching to Dolby Vision bright mode would blow out the highlight details even more, and over-brighten the picture versus reference on our review sample. Using the Buridio 7G test device, we measured input lag in game mode to be around 19ms with 1080p SDR and 4K HDR video signals, halving to 10ms with 120Hz 1080p resolution. Engaging black frame insertion would add half a frame or 8ms of lag. Unfortunately, the Sony A8 doesn't support any HDMI 2

Let's sum up, despite being designated lower than the AG9 or A9G Master Series TV, the Bravia A8 is actually the most technologically advanced OLED in Sony's television lineup at the time we filmed this video in June 2020
