There aren't any OLED TVs available at a budget price point, but the LG A2 OLED comes close. It's an excellent TV, delivering similar picture quality to the more expensive OLED TVs on this list, but it lacks all of the advanced features found on the other models. It still delivers stunning picture quality in a dark room, with deep, inky blacks that look perfect in the dark, with no distracting blooming around bright highlights in dark scenes.

It's still excellent for gaming, thanks to its incredibly low input lag and nearly instantaneous response time, so you'll enjoy a smooth, responsive gaming experience. It doesn't support HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, and it's limited to a 60Hz refresh rate, so it can't take full advantage of the PS5 or Xbox Series X consoles.

If you want to enjoy the impressive picture quality that only an OLED can deliver but don't care about the extra gaming features, the LG A2 OLED is the best HDR TV in the mid-range category we've tested.  The Sony sports Dolby Vision, HDR10 and Hybrid Log Gamma HLG HDR formats, and includes IMAX enhanced certification, along with a Netflix calibrated mode, but there's no filmmaker mode. It is a shame that Sony never seems to take part in any industry wide initiatives like the filmmaker mode preferring to do their own thing like the custom mode. Audio wise there is support for Dolby Atmos and calibration using the acoustic auto calibration system. The Cognitive Processor XR can also analyse the sound position of the signal so the sound matches precisely with the action on the screen

The Sony A80J has Google Smart TV that replaces the Android OS system seen in previous OLED models, and we found the system worked well with no issues of slowdown or crashing, and the entire OS felt fast and intuitive to use

While the new models for 2022 have just been announced at CES, the A80J from Sony offers superb image accuracy for movie viewing in dim surroundings with excellent sound quality thrown in for those without an external sound system. Plus, shopping around may result in a much better price than at launch as retailers move on stock for the new arrivals in the coming months. While the LG C1 is the better bet for gaming and HDMI 2.1 flexibility, the Sony A80J offers highly detailed image quality with superb video processing and motion. Added to this is incredible image quality for critical movie viewing with stunning colour accuracy and superb tone mapping, bringing movies to life with excellent cinematic flair. Today’s OLED market is tough with many great TVs offering their own pros and cons, but for movie fans, the Sony really does offer great calibrated image quality and features and comes highly recommended for that use.

 Compared to last year's A8H and A9G, the Bravia A80J delivers cleaner near blacks with significantly less flashing artefacts, more impactful HDR driven by Bravia XR processing, TV-led rather than player-led Dolby Vision, even sharper upscaling, more granular film mode or cinema motion control, and of course HDMI 2.1 support. The step-up A90J still has the edge in several aspects, thanks to its latest, more efficient OLED panel and additional metallic heatsink. But for the budget conscious, the Sony A80J represents a very appealing package

 Just like the A90J, the Bravia A80J turned off its white subpixels near black, resulting in significantly less near-black flashing artifacts than pre-2021 Sony OLEDs, both on test patterns and in heavily compressed viewing material, such as this footage from Game of Thrones when it was first aired. Compared to our 55-inch A90J review sample, the Sony A80J we tested had better near-black gamma tracking with a smoother transition coming out of black. But even after calibration and mitigation, shadow detail remained slightly brighter and compressed when compared against rival OLED TVs which provided more granular calibration controls near-black. That said, outside of a side-by-side comparison for reference, most viewers probably would still be happy with the clean near-black handling on the Sony A80J

Let's sum up, the Sony A80J inherits many strengths of the flagship A90J Master Series OLED, which is hardly surprising given that they share the same Bravia XR processor. Sony A80J OLED TV Review - 80% to 90% of A90J's Picture ...

 I can’t really run an Ethernet cable through the wall, so I need to make a decision fast.
