Lamy Safari vs Pilot Custom Heritage 912

Probably not unpopular but the triangle grip section on the lamy safari utterly ruins the pen.

Push button converter to fill; works great. Nib is flexible and wonderful. Only issue (only for me) is grip section diameter; it’s a tad small for my hand. About size of MontBlanc 146

I don't know if I'm simply spoiled by vintage fountain pens with flexible nibs -- but I found this pen to be vastly inferior to any other flex nib I've used. I didn't have the ink flow problem that some have reported, where the feed doesn't seem to be able to keep up, but the nib is incredibly scratchy. The construction of the pen is 'okay', but clearly on the cheap side. I guess you get what you pay for

For a big pen, these things hold surprisingly little ink when used with a standard converter. I far prefer using a syringe to refill Lamy cartridges. I suspect refilled cartridges hold 2/3 more ink than converters. 2) Lamy clips bag out over time

Giving the pen a good shake/tap can often get things flowing again, but if you have a favorite ink that you want to use that gets stuck easily in the converter, I would recommend using a different model of converter or re-using an empty pilot ink cartridge by refilling it with a pipette or blunt-needle syringe. If the higher capacity of the CON-70 is necessary, I've heard from many people that buying a separate CON-70 can help. Apparently, different batches of manufacture differ in how the inner surface of the converter interacts with ink. Obviously, that strategy can be somewhat of a cr**shoot, but some people may consider it worth the gamble

Lamy M is too broad and wet for my Muji A5 Notebook, the Kaweco fine nib was a bit too fine. I have some other FP at my disposal but they are not really a good EDC for me, the nib is too flexible (Noodler Ahab, Montblanc 348). I am looking for a recommendation for a medium-large pen with a thicker grip that and a nib that has not as much flex. Ideally a bit thicker than a Kaweco fine nib but thinner than a Lamy Safari medium nib

The Fine is my favorite, and I use it every day. I write small, so I prefer a finer nib than most folks. Of the three nib sizes, the Fine is my favorite. Nothing at all against the other two, they just serve different purposes for me

Anyway, let's look at the design of this pen, how it's put together. We'll do a writing sample, and then we'll talk about the longevity sort of stuff....

Pilot Custom Heritage 91 and 92 with soft fine medium nibs. This was endgame for me, even though I still hang around this sub reddit. Pilot pens never disappoint. Period

Personally this bothers me at 40 bucks a pop plus inks and cartridges which will not stay lubricated forever thank goodness they are only a buck for the cartridges. The inks can be quite expensive. Last a long time but expensive to build a color library if inks for calligraphy. With the way they need ink as often as they do, they are a pain in the rear if you write or draw with them

The amount I pay for 1 custom 823 I can just purchase another Pilot Kakuno extra fine with a con 70 converter from gouletpens (with taxes and shipping it'll just be $30) leaving me with $258 and with that much leftover I can buy ALOT of tomoe river paper, iroshizuku ink from gouletpens, and japanese school supplies/ stationery; so the price of the custom 823 is mainly what is keeping me from purchasing it.
