If La Sportiva Helios 3 fits you that might be a good choice. It has decent cushion but still feels fairly minimal.

i'm training for a trail half next year and have been running in vivobarefoot trail runners for years. however, i've been running on roads in the vivos, and have lately noticed that when i hike in the vivos, the bottoms of my feet get bruised. this won't be sustainable for a half, since i won't be able to carefully avoid tiny rocks that could bruise my feet. 

so, i'm looking for recommendations on barefoot trail runners that have a little more padding, either through thicker lugs on the bottom or an insole.

 I tried Lowa this round. So I will see how many years they last. The Swiss swear by La Sportiva for its resoling.

Discovered that I had $240 in REI dividends today, so my Salomon 4D 3 GTX and Darn Tough merino wool socks came out to just $9!!! Happy deal hunting everyone!

 so we have these these flex areas. It helps with the cushioning but also means it helps with the traction as well. By having this this kind of wave shape pattern on the bottom, we use the Friction Blue which is our more durable, more resistant version. So the final weight of the shoe comes down to 219 grams for a size 42 and it has a four millimeter drop from the back to the front

 We change the the lacing from the the number two version and here we have a traditional lacing which gives as much adjustability as as everybody would need. So the midsole of the Helios 3 it has the multi dynamic midsole and so that's the wave pattern you see here. and it's a knee VA It gives a lot of comfort and it also allows us to actually save a lot of weight in this shoe because by having the wave pattern it helps with the cushioning. but it also means we can reduce the amount of heavy rubber that you normally would need in the shoe

If it ain't broke, don't fix it is the mantra Salomon lives by regarding the legendary Speedcross line. The newest iteration, the Salomon Speedcross 6, includes minor design tweaks that improve upon the already great platform without reinventing the wheel. Long known for its aggressive outsole and unrivaled traction, designers modified the rubber compound to improve performance in muddy conditions. They fine-tuned the sagittate lug pattern for an even better grip on mud, rock, and everything in between. This new version is slightly lighter than the previous model, updating the upper to include more mesh for improved breathability. But don't worry, the Speedcross 6 still offers a glove-like fit straight out of the box. We're fast approaching a decade of running in these shoes, and our heart only grows fonder for this beloved trail runner.
Despite our gushing, we still have a few criticisms of this specialty shoe. Our biggest carry-over complaint between the previous version and the Speedcross 6 is the overly-assertive and outdated drop design. With a thick heel counter and 10mm heel-to-toe drop, this shoe is particularly unstable when running downhill. Although the breathability has improved by tweaking the type of mesh over the instep and forefoot, the Speedcross is better deployed during the cold weather months or high-altitude runs through the mountains. On the flip side, with other, less supportive, and less comfortable shoes pushing into its weight class, we no longer complain about the heft of the Speedcross 6. There is no better option for those who like to run off-trail, over snowy mountains, through muddy river bottoms, and up steep, rocky crags.

  These shoes are amazing. love the laces and love the feel.  However, like knobby tires on a bike or car, these wear super fast on asphalt. As much as I like them, I feel reluctant to wear them on the street because they wear down so quickly

 Waterproofing looks good. The footbed is a bit narrower than I like for stability, but frankly if I were just to need a shoe for trail running on rugged trails, I'd run these for sure. Pretty good protection for toe/heel.

These type shoes are made to fit tight. Not length but around your foot. You need to tighten them down and they “lock” your foot in nicely and after a couple weeks they conformed to my foot. They feel very comfortable after what I assume was the break-in period

... probably too many! The tightness I mentioned really comes in handy running over uneven ground like rocks, mud, up and down steep inclines

 If they last like I expect them too I think the price although high is worth it. I will be doing many runs so if anything fails or my review changes for the worse I will update immediately. Thanks for reading and I hope it helps someone who is on the fence about these.
