I wouldn’t recommend RapidVPN nor would I recommend Cyberghost at all since they are quite shit VPNs. You should look at Mullvad, Proton or IVPN for security and privacy since they don’t gather any logs.

Having lost my first remote job due to an improper VPN setup, I want to share the lessons I learned and hopefully this gets pinned so that anyone else getting started in the digital nomad's lifestyle does not have to go through what I did and lose a job.

I do now have a better paying remote job that I have been able to keep due to this setup.

First thing first, no free and/or shared VPN's

**Step 1** \- 

Get yourself a VPN router, [I currently have this nice colorful, mini, portable router that is a total beast](https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-mt300n-v2/), on the go the router can connect to any WiFi connection whether in a hotel, cafeteria or AirBnB, you then can connect from the router to your PC via Ethernet or WiFi, the router can also connect through Ethernet and be connected from Ethernet at the same time!

**Step 2** \- 

Get a Dedicated VPN, the VPN service provider that you choose depends on your job location. I use [RapidVPN](https://www.rapidvpn.com/) while it is an underdog it does have way more locations for its Dedicated IP than the likes of NordVPN or CyberGhost. Make sure that your VPN supports OpenVPN or WireGuard as this is the default set up for the MT300N-V2 from GL.Inet. 

with these two steps your good to go, travel anywhere you like in the world and appear as if your are at your designated workplace location without any worries. Even if you are at a fixed location setting your VPN up through your router can prevent your ISP from leaking especially if you are using company equipment in which they can log your IP on startup. 

Pro Tip: If you do not have a residential address in location in which your job is located you can always get a virtual mailbox from the likes of [PostScanMail.com](https://PostScanMail.com) or others depending on the state in which you are needing one from.

Your guide to the Digital Nomad's VPN setup

Of the two, I personally subscribe to Mullvad because they have a larger server network (more servers in more countries than IVPN) which results in great speeds and also because of the significantly lower price.

Mullvad or ivpn?

It is a decent service but I personally never continued with them because my expectation that for the prices they were asking of IVPN Pro the service would be better but from my experience they were on par or worse than most other vpns I use. The biggest issue I faced was battling server load, my speeds would be decent and then just get halted to a crawl.

How good is ivpn?

Yes, Mullvad is one of the best VPN providers if you are especially concerned about your privacy. Some other choices you also might want to consider are IVPN and ProtonVPN. I personally chose Mullvad because I don’t have to provide any personal information to create an account, their clean history and strong reputation in the privacy community, and their flexible pricing; I don’t have to commit to a lengthy subscription plan to get a good deal.

I'm mainly looking for privacy. I do use Tor from time to time but would like a VPN for when I am not home and on mobile.

As it's use friendly and has awesome support via their discord server. P.s ivpn supports torrenting, but they suggest not to use the us servers as they get DMCA notices.

  I sent a follow up every so often referring to my unanswered request for support.   Their knowledge base opens to a blank page.
