I’m currently sleeping on the 25+ year old mattress that I was conceived on. As you can imagine I’m very excited to graduate from this one for multiple reasons. 

After trying out a handful of different mattresses and understanding the ridiculous prices of some, I’ve come to the conclusions that 1) I prefer a medium/firm bed, and 2) I’m poor. I visited IKEA today and found the $500 Heston mattress (queen size). Curious if anyone has any experience with it, how it holds up, or any advice whatsoever. Thanks in advance!

my mother has severe spinal stenosis (several discs have broken down, she's had rods and screws installed with little benefit, as well as a torn glute repair. take care of your spines, kids.) she's 56, ~155, and sleeps on her back, prefers med-firm or firm. her gentleman companion says he's comfortable on whatever. while they were moving in together I bought them a zinus, warning them that it would break down fairly quickly and need to be replaced, and that it would be a pain when it did. the time has come.

she's up every night in serious pain, and sometimes doesn't bother trying to sleep at all. her job is very difficult and both emotionally and physically demanding, especially during covid. I don't feel like I can waste her time with a bunch of returns or DIYing something, though the zippered mattresses with layers seem doable.

she's willing to spend up to $3500 and is interested in latex or a latex hybrid for its lifespan. I'd like to avoid memory foam and memory foam hybrids because if the next mattress sags within five years I'm going to turn into the Joker.

currently looking at the Alexander nest hybrid or an Ikea hesstun mattress+good latex topper, since we live fairly close to an Ikea and a return would plausibly be easier than dealing with a mattress company.
can anyone point me in the right direction, or confirm my instincts?

5” is not the end of the world, but I adore the headboard of my new bed and I’d prefer not to cover up too much of it if I can avoid it. If I can’t find something comparable then I’ll go with the Serta model, but it can’t hurt to try!

 The softer the better. Give me all the memory foam. I am a stomach/side sleeper but I am light so I do not need or want the firmness that they generally recommend for stomach sleepers.

Also worth noting is I sat on the Purple mattress and hated it because I know I’d spend all night jamming my toes into the grid instead of falling asleep, so the only suggestion I will flat out reject is Purple. I am fully receptive to anything else!!

With that in mind, does anyone have a rec for something similar that falls in the 10-12” range? I’m near several mattress stores and department stores so it shouldn’t be hard for me to find a place to go test some of these out. If it matters, I like to sink into my mattress and not move. The softer the better. Give me all the memory foam

Tempur Pedic: everything from their base model all the way up to the $5600 top of the line. I really like them, but I'm not sure I $5600 like them. 

 It's from a reputable store in my area, so I'm not worried about it being a knock off. Molecule 2 feels great to me, but same question about breaking down. Also not meant for side sleepers. 

 BUT! She's the opposite of me when it comes to a bed. She likes the super plush " sleeping on a cloud" feel, but I have a screwed up back and am damn sick and tired of not sleeping. 

 I spent about 3K on this so I finally decided to go up to the Tempur with an adjustable base because I want something that will last me a while. I may have been able to get something of similar quality at a cheaper price but I’m done messing around or taking risks. In for a dime in for a dollar, type of thing.

So I bought one recently. Why? I had a Serta iComfort Hybrid I’d had about six and a half years but for the past two it’s been giving me fits. I spent about 3K on this so I finally decided to go up to the Tempur with an adjustable base because I want something that will last me a while. Yet now I see people all the time saying they bought a tempur or are considering it and I know these beds are 4K+. To me it shows how well marketing works. Because with so many other options on the market it seems people are willing to go with the most expensive option by far just for the security of the name.

Serious Question: Why does everyone lean towards Tempurpedic? Is it because of brand recognition and marketing?

 We ended up keeping it and like it now that it has broken in.  It feels more like a medium-firm at this point. We both weigh about 140-145 lbs, if that helps.  Time will tell on the longevity of this mattress

It is unfortunate that most things are not made to last these days. Besides the foams that may not be of high quality, the springs inside the hybrids may not last either and end up sagging as well, possibly before the foams do. 

My take on this subject is to buy the best you can afford, and then take steps to try and squeeze out the maximum life out of your purchase, such as ensuring a supportive base, rotating the mattress regularly, and using a waterproof mattress protector. Don’t treat the mattress like a trampoline, and hope for the best.

For quick background, I'm 5'1, 110lbs, mostly a side sleeper but sometimes on my back. I sleep hot when sleeping with my partner (but it might actually be my bedding as I use a down-filled duvet).  He is 6'3, 190lbs, exclusively a back sleeper. I want him to be reasonably comfortable but he doesn’t live with me, so the priority is going to be on my needs. 

I went to Mattress Firm last weekend and I found that the Serta iSeries 4000 hybrid in plush was comfortable to me, but I didn't stay on it for more than a few minutes. That’s the only one I have my eye on. My partner wasn't with me to try it. I can’t remember what my old bed feels like when I try new ones, so it’s difficult to compare for me. Should I go back and try it again, for longer, and bring my partner? Would I be able to tell fairly quickly in the store if it hurt my spine or shoulder or something? Does anyone here have experience with that mattress?

Serta iSeries 4000 Hybrid?

I will start with I have never seen a setup with separate heat and AC thermostats so temper my response with that info. Being in Texas the air conditioner is the important piece (if we ignore last weekend) and the heater is an integrated piece of the air handler. Both are controlled by a single control board and managed by a single thermostat.  I would be interested to see what your setup is behind the scenes

I personally have a Lennox A/C system and there is a caveat to the previous statement.  That iComfort  WiFi thermostat you have is a communicating thermostat and controls the Lennox system over a serial connection instead of shorting wires.  It is more of an extension of the  control board instead of being a set of intelligent relays. Things the iComfort communication provides is the ability to manage a multistage compressor and the speed of the system fan

 I'm sure you've heard of Serta. They've been around forever. Probably one of the most well-known mattress companies out there. We are reviewing the Cf-4000 and what that is they they say it's their max Cooling Max pressure relief upgrade in the eye comfort

Serta IComfort CF4000 Mattress Review

Tested out some yesterday and thought the Casper was too soft for me. I liked the Serta iComfort CF2000 but my wife thought it was too firm. 

I’m 6’1” and 190lbs and a back sleeper. My wife is 5’ petite side sleeper. I prefer a firmer mattress to support my lower back but my wife doesn’t want a bed that’s TOO firm.
