What are the shortcomings of the Hoka Speedgoat 5? We have been surprised by how quickly they wear down—the sole and midsole in particular. When standing at our local running store recently, a gentleman in front of us was buying new Hokas and said, “I absolutely love these shoes but am bummed by how quickly they pack out,” which sums up our experiences as well. In addition, the revamped upper now forgoes any overlays, which means you get less protection and stability than previous models—we found the 5 quite squirrely for trail running on technical terrain. Running brand Hoka is no stranger to trail-ready footwear, and their lightweight and cushioned designs have made a recent entrance into the hiking market. Built as a trail runner, the Speedgoat 5 has been adopted by the thru-hiking community as a durable, capable shoe that can meet the demands of hikers and minimalist backpackers alike. In true Hoka style, the Speedgoat features a super thick midsole that isolates you nicely from uneven terrain, and you still get ample firmness for covering serious ground. Following suit, the outsole is impressively grippy and—although non-traditional—we found ourselves really appreciating the athletic and sprightly feel of the rockered sole.

If you’re thinking about going with a trail running shoe for hiking, there are a few important considerations to keep in mind. In terms of trail performance, you get far less protection from rocks and roots, and the flexible build translates to noticeably less stability on uneven ground (especially while carrying a load). And durability-wise, a minimalist shoe like the Speedgoat will pack out, abrade, and lose its cushion more quickly than a burly hiking-specific model. It’s also worth noting that the fifth-gen Speedgoat features a softer midsole than the 4, along with a less durable upper (it is lighter and more breathable, however)—which benefits runners but isn’t necessarily great news for hikers. That said, it’s hard to argue with the myriad thru-hikers that routinely log 20-plus-mile days (with an overnight load) wearing the Speedgoat.  So when I compare those shoes together, this shoe is a little bit heavier than that and it does feel like it takes me a little bit longer to pick up my feet. The torrent too, is lighter weight, it's a little less cushioned, I'm a little bit closer to the ground, so I feel like I have a little bit more nimbleness in my runs, which I kind of dig. and I still have like the amount of cushioning that I like this shoe. I wonder if it'll like

 I actually got it on the trail just to kind of keep me a little bit more secure. and looking particularly at the heel, you know it's got this really distinctive hoka heel that lots of their shoes have. Like it makes me think of the Clifton at this point that's got kind of a similar heel to me. It's It's kind of cool looking, but it really just has my heel slipping out a lot on this shoe, which is why I went with the heel lock tie

 Kind of have that bend and you can see where that kind of bend is. That plastic would kind of dig into the top part of my foot. This time there's no plastic and now I've been able to actually test out the shoe on a few different runs. If it were me in your situation I'd get the Speedgoat 5 because it has more cushioning and in my view higher durability and longer overall lifetime. I value cushioning and underfoot protection a bit more than speed and nimbleness. Cushioning will just die over time and the Torrent 2s have less, so after 150-250 miles or so they could be uncomfortable over sharp objects and you might have to really pick your way around sharp things on trail (and at this point Speedgoats may be faster and less bothersome overall because you can just stomp on whatever) or consider getting a new shoe.

After the popularity and success of the Speedgoat 4, and knowing that Hocus done away with their stellar Speed Goat Evo, I had high hopes and heavy concerns that the Speed Code 5 would be a drastic change to a model that had clawed its way back to be an ultimate performer.  the overall comfort in the upper and the midsole I think has improved compared to the Spigo 4. I could never find a pair of Evo speed goats here in Canada where I live, so I never got to run in that upper and I never felt what that matrix upper felt like. So I can only compare this new mesh upper to the prior mesh upper of the speedgoat 4.

 But when it comes to a locked in fit on technical terrain, I would prefer the Speed Goat 4 every time. So I was obviously extremely excited for the Speedgo 5 because the Speedgo 4 was my favorite trail shoe of all time. Hey guys, my name is Colin and this is my review of the Hoka Speed Goat 5 after 100 kilometers. So right off the bat I'll tell you that I actually ordered another pair of Speed Goat Fours before they're gone, but I'll talk about that a little bit later when I get into the upper of the Speed Goat Five. So let's start things off with the fit. So these fit true to size

 I'm a size 10 and a half in all my Hoka shoes in all my other shoes basically, and these fit great. They do run a little bit narrow as Hokas are kind of known to do, and if I line it up here with the Speed Goat Four, you know they look very similar. However, the difference between the four and the fives is that this upper in the Speed Goat Five is much more forgiving and pliable. It doesn't feel as constricted in the forefoot compared to the Speed Goat Four, so the five does give your foot the ability to move around a little more comfortably instead of feeling constricted and locked in compared to the speedgo force

If it ain't broke, don't fix it is the mantra Salomon lives by regarding the legendary Speedcross line. The newest iteration, the Salomon Speedcross 6, includes minor design tweaks that improve upon the already great platform without reinventing the wheel. Long known for its aggressive outsole and unrivaled traction, designers modified the rubber compound to improve performance in muddy conditions. They fine-tuned the sagittate lug pattern for an even better grip on mud, rock, and everything in between. This new version is slightly lighter than the previous model, updating the upper to include more mesh for improved breathability. But don't worry, the Speedcross 6 still offers a glove-like fit straight out of the box. We're fast approaching a decade of running in these shoes, and our heart only grows fonder for this beloved trail runner.
Despite our gushing, we still have a few criticisms of this specialty shoe. Our biggest carry-over complaint between the previous version and the Speedcross 6 is the overly-assertive and outdated drop design. With a thick heel counter and 10mm heel-to-toe drop, this shoe is particularly unstable when running downhill. Although the breathability has improved by tweaking the type of mesh over the instep and forefoot, the Speedcross is better deployed during the cold weather months or high-altitude runs through the mountains. On the flip side, with other, less supportive, and less comfortable shoes pushing into its weight class, we no longer complain about the heft of the Speedcross 6. There is no better option for those who like to run off-trail, over snowy mountains, through muddy river bottoms, and up steep, rocky crags.

  These shoes are amazing. love the laces and love the feel.  However, like knobby tires on a bike or car, these wear super fast on asphalt. As much as I like them, I feel reluctant to wear them on the street because they wear down so quickly

Salomon Speedcross 6 Review - The Best Trail Running Shoe?

 Waterproofing looks good. The footbed is a bit narrower than I like for stability, but frankly if I were just to need a shoe for trail running on rugged trails, I'd run these for sure. Pretty good protection for toe/heel.

These type shoes are made to fit tight. Not length but around your foot. You need to tighten them down and they “lock” your foot in nicely and after a couple weeks they conformed to my foot. They feel very comfortable after what I assume was the break-in period

... probably too many! The tightness I mentioned really comes in handy running over uneven ground like rocks, mud, up and down steep inclines

 If they last like I expect them too I think the price although high is worth it. I will be doing many runs so if anything fails or my review changes for the worse I will update immediately. Thanks for reading and I hope it helps someone who is on the fence about these.

Trail runners best friend

The shoes are excellent in all but one respect: the ridged soles slip on wet rocks. Great fit, cushioning, construction, quick tie laces. All good EXCEPT: if you need to walk on rocks that are even a little wet or mossy, watch out. You will land in the drink
