Yup, I've had a pretty similar experience. To me, it's a case where once a headphone is competent, then any upgrades from it are minor. Any competent headphone will sound just fine. Like my current top headphone is the Stax SR-L700mk2 that has been extensively EQ'ed to fit my preference, but when I listened to the Aeon 2 Closed, even without the perforated pads that I installed later, they sounded fine. I think they sound better with the perforated pads, but even before that they didn't sound bad. When I got my Beoplay Portal as a general-purpose headphone, it also sounded fine. I could tell it was less clear than the Stax or the Aeon, but it sounded good enough that its technical weakness never interfered with my listening experience.

When I go back to my oratory-EQ'ed Sundara, it sounds fine as well. For casual listening while I'm working I wouldn't notice much difference between it and the high-end stuff that I have. The ATH-A990Z with brainwavz pads also sounds fine, in fact I like the Audio Technica Art/Air line's mid-boosted tuning.

In fact, even when going back to the HyperX Cloud Alpha that I keep at the office for calls, that sounded fine too. I could enjoy my music on that headphone too without feeling like I was missing out on something in the moment. If I'm not A/B testing things and looking for differences, most competent gear will sound good enough to me.

In contrast, the Resident Audio RS15, a cheap headphone that came bundled with the electric keyboard that my wife got, never sounded good to me or my wife. That thing falls below the bar of competence and never sounded good no matter how many times I revisited it.

Back when I got into this hobby in 2017, I started off with the HD 650, but sold it due to money and having stronger preference for non Harman curve based frequency responses. When I went back to my old headphones, it sounded noticeably much worse, which eventually spurred me to try again years later as the low quality drove me insane. Then, this happened a 2nd time when I sold my Fostex TH900 MK1 to buy a Fostex TH900 MK2 and I had no other audiophile headphones at the time, so I went back to my non audiophile headphones. That time period also drove me insane with the low quality sound.

I have never been able to notice huge differences that reviewers rave about. I own headphones that cost 1000 dollars and headphones that cost 100 dollars and there is a difference, but way smaller than one could think.

Nope can't relate. I turned 18 and went straight to the Hd 800 so I didn't have to hear any trash and then work my way up.

Like when you're getting into the gear at first, having not found the piece that scratches that itch, you seem to exaggerate the smallest of differences between headphones/amps/dacs etc.

Anyone else notice they exaggerate the differences when starting out?

  The headphone is beautifully crafted, featuring Urushi lacquer cups (mesmerizing!), all hand made in Japan. The packaging and product presentation is luxurious, including a glamour brochure like that included with a new car. . 

 The V profile frequency response on these is wild, the bass is amazing but also the large cup size and detailed highs combine for an enormous soundstage for closed backs. I also have the TR-X00 Ebony from Massdrop, and although wonderful in their own right, can attest that the 1 Tesla variant simply can't quite muster the impressive force the TH900 brings to your ears.  I own many top tier headphones (electrostats, planar mags, balanced armature as well as an army of high impedance german dynamics). These are not the most accurate headphones I own, but they may be the most FUN, the most joyous

 I disagree with Fostex' description of these as a reference headphone - these are a STATEMENT headphone. Their aim is not accuracy, but curation, offering you a luxuriously selected spectrum on a platter.  We don't know how well this is gonna do a year from now, we don't know how well this is gonna last, who knows how reliable the drivers are in here, but based on the way that everything else feels here, I think this is a solid step up from the previous HIFMN headphones that constantly failed. I don't really think that there's as much to worry about with something like this. So yeah, if you were trying to find the best value, the best bang for the buck headphone available right now, my money is on the HIFMN Sandara. I don't think that there's anything that outperforms its competition to the degree that this does for the range of competition that it does

 This is a planar magnetic over-ear open back headphone that comes in right at around $350. So let's take a look. This review unit was sourced through Headphones.com

 I got onto one of the loaner programs through Hi-Fi Man and they actually sent me two units. So I put it through its paces extensively and found that I really liked the headphone. It had a few minor issues like, for example, a little bit of bass roll-off and then a little bit of upper mid-range shout, but for the most part it was what I considered to be a benchmark at the $350 price range. And now for the past couple of weeks, I've been hearing rumors of a few stealth revisions that have been happening to some of the Hi-Fi Man headphones, including the Sundara, the Ananda, and the Aria

 With the suede pads it's way worse, and with leather pads it's much more where I'd want it to be, and then I also find that the Virum 1 at the upper range for the treble, it does roll off a little bit, or it's a little bit, you know, pulled back, withdrawn, and while I can understand why some people might like that, to me the tonal balance for this, it just, your cymbals and percussive instruments crash through so much nicer, and then similarly with the LCD-1, perhaps even better depending on which area of the treble you value more, everything about the treble with this is also fantastic, but the main drawback with the LCD-1 is that its technical performance just isn't on the same level as the HIFIMEN Sandara, for everything from detail to speed to punch and dynamics to soundstage, imaging, everything about the Sandara is just categorically better, and that's even when you do use the Reveal Plus here, and of course I don't think we should be surprised by that, because look at how this, look at how different the size is for these, right, so this is, these are totally different things, and my experience of using them for the sound quality has lined up exactly with what I think we should expect, so this new revision obviously takes the HIFIMEN Sandara to the next level, it's, it was already fantastic, but comparing this to these two headphones, this is the clear winner, but when you compare this to other headphones, I really struggle to think of anything under $700 that I would rather have than the HIFIMEN Sandara, I know some of you guys are gonna ask about how this compares to the Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro, and I've seen some videos out there where people are saying, ah, maybe that would be their pick, but no, unless it's specifically for studio use, this is just so much better for actually listening to music, it's better for just about every performance category except for soundstage, so the instrument separation, structural definition for images, surgical precision, detail, and I know some of you guys are gonna be thrown off by that, but I struggle to think that that headphone's reputation for being highly detailed is for any other reason other than the massive 8.5kHz peak in the consonant range where the S's, F's, and T's are that over sharpen that range, so it should be obvious by now that I absolutely love this headphone, and it's at the point where I would, I'm, I would really like to buy it, and maybe I will, and in my mind, this, especially this new revision, whenever this happened, where the, where they changed the pads, or when it, when they changed the material a little bit, for the frequency response that this has, coupled with its already excellent technical performance, this needs to be considered the new value benchmark, the same way that the HD 6XX was at, you know, $220 or whatever it is right now, for the longest time it was like, you buy that headphone because it's better than everything else under $500, and now I think that's the Sandara, and it probably even is better than stuff that costs a lot more than that, so yeah, I have absolutely no reservation about recommending the HIFMN Sandara. If this revision is any indication of what the other ones have had, you know, I need to evaluate those first, but there's a very good chance that I end up buying this as well, because this needs to be the thing that other headphones, especially at this price range, or under $700 or $500 or whatever, everything else needs to be evaluated against this. The one thing to still keep in mind is that this is still HIFMN, and so the build quality question is still valid

HiFiMAN Sundara Headphone Review - Best value planar in 2020?

 Seriously? For me, however, the dealbreaker was comfort. The housings on these things are very large and the clamping force is substantial. No matter how much I adjusted them, the pads on the housings pressed hard on the back of my ears and the bottom rear of my jaw, and I found that I could wear them for much more than thirty minutes before I have to take them off. This may have to do with the fact that the ear cup housings do not rotate at all, they are fixed perpendicular to the headband, and thus there's no compensation for pressure differences from the front to the back of the ear cups against your head/ears

 No matter how much I adjusted them, the pads on the housings pressed hard on the back of my ears and the bottom rear of my jaw, and I found that I could wear them for much more than thirty minutes before I have to take them off. This may have to do with the fact that the ear cup housings do not rotate at all, they are fixed perpendicular to the headband, and thus there's no compensation for pressure differences from the front to the back of the ear cups against your head/ears. As I said at the outset, this review will quite probably be an outlier, but if the issues I've raised are important to you, be sure to buy them from a source where you can return them if you don't like them – such as Amazon, right here. :-)

 This experience did not leave a good taste in my mouth. I then purchased a set of their true wireless earbuds (I think the model number is TWS-600). They had a lot going for them, including great battery life and great Bluetooth range. But the charging case is so poorly designed that if you use some of the larger ear tips provided by the manufacturer, the earbuds will not charge in the case

 Which brings us to the Sundara. I went into the audition of these headphones with "cautious optimism:" optimistic because of the good reviews, especially the promise of a large, open soundstage and sophisticated, airy highs. I was cautious because of the cheesy quality control that I had experienced earlier. Although I found these headphones to have fairly pleasing sound, there is, to my ears, a spike somewhere in the upper midrange that creates a harsh, grating sibilance on certain tracks

I suspect this review will be an outlier, but…

I bought these headphones in 2020 about 1 and a half years ago and I use them daily at my desktop for about 8-10 hours a day. After the first year the headband completely shattered one day out of nowhere on the left side and I discovered the band made from cheap plastic and fake metal-plastic with the exception of 2 of the 8 pieces of the band.  After gluing it together with super glue and trying to work with it, it has repeatedly broken over and over with no solution and now the ear pads it comes with are COMPLETELY destroyed from just daily wear.  For 300$ this is 100% not worth it over the Sennheiser competitor options

 Also these are some of the most open headphones ever. If you can hear your music someone 10 feet away can as well. As far as comfort goes they aren't the worst for me. Their pads are scratchy and slightly small, while the headband is just fine

 The driver of a headphone induces latency, so a faster driver = a faster sound. This makes music feel more lifelike and energetic and is a great part of this headphone, and its very detailed for the price. The downside for me is the tuning, these are tuned "boring neutral" in my opinion. These have subdued bass, neutralish mids, and slightly elevated treble

 I'll talk about the objective pro of this headphone first, the SPEED. This as a concept sounds weird, but it is a very real thing. This makes music feel more lifelike and energetic and is a great part of this headphone, and its very detailed for the price

 As far as comfort goes they aren't the worst for me. Their pads are scratchy and slightly small, while the headband is just fine. They aren't super heavy or anything so it isn't much of an issue, but something to be aware of.

Sundara

 So it just kind of depends what your priorities are. At the end of the day, I actually, I love the Sundara. It sounded much better than I expected it to at $300. I've used them a ton, partly because of the comfort and again, just with a slight EQ to the upper treble and just a little bit of a lift in the low bass, they sound incredible to me

 And it's something as simple as if my computer is rendering like my big desktop and my fans are going, these don't do a great job at passive noise isolation. I'm going to hear a lot of that fan noise. So if I'm doing something critical and the fans are making a lot of noise, this becomes an issue for me and it does impact the subtleness of the sound, you know, the softer notes, things like that. You lose some of that dynamic range because now it's blending in with your environment noise

 The Sundara has been out for a while, years actually, and there was even a slight revision to it two years ago where they basically upgraded the pad. They modified the pad shape a little bit, which did affect sound quality slightly, but overall it's been the same awesome headphone for a while. So I'm going to do my own take on this headphone, compare it to others above and below the price range. Maybe you have one of these others and this will help kind of connect the dots or give you some form of understanding and how they stack up differently to each other

Hifiman Sundara Review - Revisiting a modern classic

  These sound great but they need a lot of power to get nice and loud. An under-$200 Schiit headphone amp is working fine for me. These headphones have a 32 ohms impedance, which should be taken into consideration where choosing an amp.  The supplied cord is rather short and has an awkward 90 degree male connector

 I’ve had no issues with “build quality” at all. Nothing has loosened and there are no “glued on” parts falling off. The non-swiveling cans are a non-issue to me. I’m using these to listen to music without waking someone down the hall or next door, not to be a DJ in a club somewhere

.speaking of bass, I’m sitting here right now, listening to Gorillaz: Spacemonkeyz versus Gorillaz—Laika Come Home. I’m drenched in bass, with mids and highs so clear and open that I have to double check I’m not also running my speakers. Regarding “openness,” I often will hear something on these headphones that I’ll mistake for something happening elsewhere in the room
