New user, posting my setup. I'm not a dealer, just a long time vinyl collector. Let me know if anyone has questions or comments on my setup. I've got a weekly YouTube channel but I thought I'd start out by sharing my setup first :)

In the end, I decided on the Fluance RT85 because of a couple of items. I was looking to start a bit cheaper, but the Blue 2M cartridge that came on the Fluance was the deciding factor and I am so glad I went this route. The other reasons were the acrylic platter and the physical switch for the 33/45 instead of having to switch the belt like in many similar priced turntables.

So, I am here to confess that after a lot of back and forth, I am pretty confident that I'm going with a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO. I'd like to credit u/sharkamino for all of his help. I did some more research and digging. 

I need to get to my local HiFi store. They're basically down to the P1 and the Evo. 

Now, I'm moving on to pre-amps/integrated receivers. 

Down the rabbit hole I go!

Turntable decision

The best bargain at this price is the Fluance RT85. It comes with an Ortofon 2M Blue, which has a superior stylus compared to what’s on any of these others (nude tip rather than bonded).

I seem to alway find myself in this position when I go and try and buy something I save up for, I save for one thing but once I have the money I find 10 other different options I want. I have about $500 and I’m trying to buy a new turntable. I was saving for the pro- ject debut carbon evo, and I was dead set. 

But then I was playing with an AT-LPW50PB and I thought it was pretty good and I could save some money buying this for a preamp. I’ve heard the motors on these could be a little noisy but I didn’t hear anything with the one I was using.

The agony of trying to buy something new

 There's a lot of slack in the lever, it bounces the arm if you lift it too quickly and the tonearm safety latch feels like its going to break off every time I use it.  My last turntable was a Pro-ject Essential III and even though the body of this Fluance is much more substantial, the entire experience of lowering the needle with the tonearm lever on the Pro-ject was more solid and satisfying, whereas the RT85 feels flimsy and crappy.  The Ortofon 2m Blue looks cool, but to be honest, for a $250 cartridge it doesn't really sound much better to me than the OM10 on my Pro-ject, which didn't sound much better to me than the ADC QLM32 Mrk III on my Hitachi HT-324 from the 80s. I told you I'm not an audiophile

I am not an audiophile, just a guy who likes to listen to records. I bought the white Fluance RT85 because of the positive reviews and because it looked cool with its acrylic platter, etc. I have owned many different turntables and record players over the years, but this one is the most expensive.  Overall it's an okay turntable, but that's probably as far as I would go with it

 Colored vinyl really pops on the white, though the visual aesthetic proves more impressive than actually using it.  The entire tonearm mechanism feels super cheap. The tonearm lever, stand and safety latch actually feels like something you'd find on a cheapo plastic portable record player like a Crosley. Maybe I got a bad one, but that's my honest opinion

 The new Bamboo veneer, (Available as of May 22, 2021) is matte, clean and elegant which provides a nice contrast amid the brown, black and silver quagmire of modern Hi-Fi. First things first, the sound quality is a substantial upgrade from the RT82 by FLUANCE that I had purchased only a year prior. In fact it's the best sounding turntable for beginners I've ever heard. Not that I've traveled the world in search of turntable nirvana mind you. However I've seen my fair share amongst others in this price category and I'm highly impressed by the RT85's Value For Money

Although my original goal was sound isolation like you, my favorite setup is the open back Monoprice Monolith M570 ($200-$250) and a BTR5. The M570s just put a smile on my face every time I use them.

Budget - $200-$250. I’d spend a bit more for the right headphones, but I’d prefer to keep it around $200.

Source/Amp - Apple Music on a 2020 iPad Pro, iPhone 12 Pro, and 2020 13” MacBook Pro. It will mostly be used with the iPad Pro. I’m considering also subscribing to a service with lossless audio, but I’m waiting until I get headphones so I can compare the quality to Apple Music before making a decision.

How the gear will be used - I need noise isolation since I’ll sometimes be listening with a child in the room. I also don’t want to listen at night without waking anyone up. It will mostly be used at home.

Preferred tonal balance - Some bass would be okay since I sometimes listen to Hip Hop, but not too much. I like to feel like I’m in the room with the musicians. Clear, detailed audio. I like to get lost in the music. I don’t like when the highs sound harsh.

Preferred music genre(s) - Lot’s of classic rock from the 60s through the 90s. Metal. Hip Hop. Jazz. Oldies. Pop from the 80s and 90s. I’ll use them for movies and gaming also (no online so I don’t need a microphone), but mostly music.

Past gear experience - I’m currently using AirPods Pro. I don’t hate them. They’re cool for what they are. But I want a pair of wired over the ear headphones for critical listening of music.

I essentially want the best experience I can for streaming music. I don’t want headphones that are overkill for my situation. I don’t anticipate going beyond streaming from my iPad anytime soon.

Headphone recommendation

This amp is heavy and tough. I have this paired up with my denon x4500h and noticed all my klipsch rp speakers have slight low hum if you put your ear right in front of the tweeter. I dont hear the hum when I sit in my sofa 12ft away so it doesnt bother me as much anymore. My denon reciever alone sounds a little more forward with slight more clarity with no hum and my monolith amp is a little less forward more natural sounding less in your face with wider sound stage with slight low hum

I was able to get mine for $1300 since with my applied amazon points to make it cheaper. The temperature is cool and warm to the touch so far and all 7 channels work for me

 Just be prepared to by a power conditioner to eliminate hum and cleaner power with surge protection. I think that my denon reciever sounds a little better than my monolith amp imo but the monolith amp is no slouch at all. In terms of sound I would rate the monolith amp an 8 out of 10 and my denon av reciever a 9 out of 10 for sound. I know this amps will help my av reciever do less work but I just have to eliminate some electric line noise then it would be perfect

Although I've tried anything from $5 to $4,000 headphones, I ended up with ZMF Auteurs and the JDS Labs Element II in the end. 

The deeper I go into the hobby, the more you realize how small the marginal diminishing returns are. Also, given how subjective this hobby is, price becomes a poor indicator of quality even in the audiophile headphone market. 

Currently, I am very satisfied with my ZMF Auteurs, but at the same time I wonder if it's really worth having more than $2,000 MSRP worth of gear, since there are just so many good headphones out there that can be had for $350 or less.

Although the Auteurs are amazing sounding, I also think that I would be happy with something much cheaper. 

I've seen a lot of people downgrading/downsizing after a long time in this hobby. I wonder what you had at your "peak" and what you ended up with.

For me personally, I've been thinking of downgrading to something like a HD600, since it's tuned very much to my liking with harman-esque treble/midrange without too much bass bloat.

Those who downsized/downgraded their setup, what was the most expensive stuff you owned and what did you end up with?

 Focal Chorus 726's for stereo. Chorus center and bookshelf for center and rear surround and klipsch atmos for spearks. Denon X4500H as the preamp. My system isn't 50 grand but it's quite nice and this monolith is getting all of it out of it I believe

For folks looking to buy the five channel model I would suggest less expensive options. I had an OSD 5x125 that ran me a little under 500 that doesn't sound as good as the monolith but it doesn't sound 2/3rds as bad. The Monoprice amp is good. It's very good but at least for me, it is not worth the 1500 dollar premium (7 channel)

 Denon X4500H as the preamp. My system isn't 50 grand but it's quite nice and this monolith is getting all of it out of it I believe. My issue is with the price a bit but I suspect those components inside are why and perhaps after several months of break-in I'll change this review.

  I have to replace these high quality speaker cables and use custom-built cables just to accommodate the amplifier connectors.  I hope Monoiith will come with an upgrade kit for these speaker connectors in the future that I can purchase.

 I am using a high quality speaker cables which have banana connectors built-in from the manufacturer. This amplifier cannot securely tight the banana plug.  I have to replace these high quality speaker cables and use custom-built cables just to accommodate the amplifier connectors.  I hope Monoiith will come with an upgrade kit for these speaker connectors in the future that I can purchase

  Update 3 (5/19/2020): I just acquired magnepan 1.7i recently and two of my integrated amplifiers (mcintosh & luxman) did not seem to bring the 1.7i to life. I swapped it with monoprice and its sheer power brought my 1

 My reference is Luxman 550axii & McIntosh ma252.  Update2 (3/2/2020): I have changed my setup to a near field desktop setup, I am using this amplifier with Sonus Faber Chameleon and Aune T1 with Siemens cca tube buffer. My Marantz SR7009 was the bottleneck as it could not deliver a higher resolution sound. I have finally found synergy with the above combination

 It is easily driving my Dynaudio dm3/7 which is a hard speaker to drive with 4ohm impedance, 86db sensitivity, and IEC power handling of >200W+. This unit does not get hot at all, even after hours of usage. This is definitely an audiophile quality amplifier. The power remote cable is convenient feature, it is connected to my Marantz so I don't have to keep turning both units on and off
