I'm going to college this fall and am starting to think of what I'm going to need to prepare and bring with me, and one of the biggest problems I've come across is what I should do for an amp situation in my small-ish dorm. I currently have a Marshall DSL40 which I absolutely love, but as of right now I don't think I'll be taking it with me as it gets pretty loud and is kinda bulky. I also have a really small and crappy crate amp my grandfather gave me when I first started playing which I could bring with me, but its really not all that quality. The first solution I though of was getting studio monitors and playing through my interface with the digital amps I currently have in Helix Native so that I can practice, but also produce music. The second was a smallish practice amp that sounds nice but wont bring in noise complaints, and that I can take with me to play live and jam with friends. With the monitors I would have to eventually buy a new amp or get my Marshall up to university, but with an amp I would always have to record and mix music through headphones (which isn't all that bad, I just like the luxury of having monitors).

Best solution for college, monitors with digital amps, or small practice amp? [QUESTION]

 Tube snobs will look down, but you can get some phenomenal 'tone' out of these amps if you are willing to spend a little time tuning your patches. Also worth mentioning is that the III can get stupidly loud, I can barely stand going past 2 for practice, and with friends you can keep up with almost any drummer.  This is the perfect amp for a amateur player who is 'finding their sound' or a veteran who wants versatility while still being able to pull some excellent sounds out of his amp. Highly recommend one, and the red color on mine is quite sharp and stands out

I am a huge Mustang III amp fan after having played mine for the last 6 months. Extremely versatile, easy to use, and very good sound quality. The Fender models are truly excellent and I find myself enjoying some of the others a lot too. FUSE software lets you download other peoples patches, which is a nice bonus

Versatility and great sound

 The mastery sounded good, but to my ears it didn't sound $200 better than the stock bridge. The only mod back here is I did have West Lamb go ahead and he fit what you call it little brass I guess just fillers or whatever around the post so this bridge doesn't rock back and forth like they're supposed to and that does help with the tuning a lot. if you have a Mustang it's not staying in tune that well I'll think about asking your tech to do that before doing something else crazy. What I like to do to get my tremolo is the cool thing about these guitars

 You can actually yet probably see the difference there. It's a good guitar too, let's see so it's shorter, which means all the frets are closer together I'm 5/8 on a good day so that's really convenient for me. I can get it I can do stretches on this guitar that that I can't do as easily on other guitars. Also, the nut with up here is is the smaller one in 5/8 so it's very narrow up here which can for some people they don't like these guitars because of that reason

 Things about Mustang Yeah, they are thwack. II They don't have a lot of sustain on their own. Yeah, you're not going to get this thing to sing or store like a. Les Paul It's not going to have the power of the growl of a telly

 So yep, it's just me and Pete today. you are massively louder in my ears than I am so I hope you couldn't hear yourself yeah I think I can balance that out something uh we will we will um but yes so this is mine feels not really nice to play really like I can completely see how this has become kind of a cult classic yeah I don't even know necessarily this is a beginner's guitar anymore is it just becomes something that it might suit your style maybe maybe smaller guitars are more comfy for you maybe you just like that slightly anti-hero kind of vibe of the mustang um anti-hero that's a very cool very good word uh anyway anyway I mean it's the same one it's just the p90s in there it's got the palfero board it's got the satin finish neck it's got the fender tuners on the back there made in mexico nice satin a burgundy uh finish um four bolt on the back little sticker that says don't throw in the bin um and you know and the difference between between the p90s there's more volume in them you know oh that's the back it's really I'm not going to turn it down a little bit so if you again Pete and I were lucky enough to go to a brilliant pickup maker called Monty's recently who explained how a p90 is different to a single coil yeah and it's to do with where the magnet is in the in the pickup so proper single coils the the six pole pieces are actually magnetized and then the coppers wound like that on a p90 the pole pieces aren't magnetized but a big bar magnet sits underneath it which kind of creates the magnetic field and the coppers wound around the pole pieces as normal uh but yes generally speaking a p90 is a fatter louder version of a single coil so i mean it sounds great uh middle how are you finding the short scaleness of it i i think generally speaking they are a bit less stable in terms of tuning yeah in the 25 and a half inch scale length you know what it doesn't feel like a shorter guitar because the body is quite long right so the body is actually from here to here i reckon it's more or less the same as a telecast at least so when you got your arm over and it doesn't have the armrest which means that it's thinner isn't it this bit here it's that from and also it feels like this whole bit is a bit further you have to have your arm in a bit more when you arm further it's just a bit it's a different way of sitting with it it's not and it's not very balanced you see i love that i love that color oh yeah it's not as balanced as what were we trying the other day that was super balanced although was it the prs guitars but i don't know it's not no no it's it's top heavy a little bit top heavy isn't it yeah and i'm even leaning it on you know i mean what we're saying by that if you're not you know ideally what you kind of want for comfort is the guitar to fairly naturally hang it on a strap or on your lap in that position because if you're sitting and the bigger headstock on this does just make it want to um slide over but not i mean like once you've got your arm here so yeah yeah it's not it's not a problem but you still have to hold it up with your arm so there's you know but you know here's a bit of here's a bit of gain it's fat that front that front pickup is fat isn't it middle very spanky uh and then on the bridge that seems that seems like less output in the yeah i noticed that on this one it was like the neck pickup was fatter sounding yeah but i'm not sure i'm i'm not i'm not personally so keen on this i must admit the color i absolutely love it the color i just think it's a vibe it's got a vibe to it no i agree 300 quid more is it worth it it was on the it's going to neck a bit fuller maybe sounding but i thought that the the classic vibe was definitely brighter and louder i think that's louder that sounds great that's great man let's do it again same i'm not changing anything i'm literally just putting it classic vibe is just bonkers bonkers good if you want a good not too expensive guitar doesn't matter whether you want strat telly whatever jazz master jaguar mustang check out classic vibe they're always good i'll go back over here man 300 and something quid that color is from maybe there's a little bit it's more clarity in those pickups yeah i think maybe these strings could do with a change at some point but that's the whole thing with that's what i was saying with classic vibe okay so whatever just give them the full setup deluxe setup everything and you could have one of like every fender guitar that there was for sort of two grand probably yeah i mean the for the for the strat telly must not mustang strat telly uh jazz master and jaguar they were like 1400 quid yeah and that's what i mean but then and then you spend like do a bit of money on each one yeah it's a great shout it's you know if you just if you just want one of each and they're not where they're made or whatever yeah because these are super value for money i i do i think they play really really good and it sounds great here we go i'm just going to turn up a bit okay so here we go so here's some tones so again you've got the same system uh switcharoonie up here switcharoonie you should save a man united didn't he yeah you could neck bridge oh sounds great man and i'm gonna do a little quickly ab switch on that i think i would just switch those two and then a little bit of gain from a derple oh i'm confused so i mean it feels great to play so it's so much similar i think if it was a jump between the vintera and the and the um classic visor yeah okay because bearing in mind the vintera is like 300 quid more is it worth it it was on the it's going to neck a bit fuller maybe sounding but i thought that the the classic vibe was definitely brighter and louder i think that's louder that sounds great that's great man let's do it again same i'm not changing anything i'm literally just putting it classic vibe is just bonkers bonkers good if you want a good not too expensive guitar doesn't matter whether you want strat telly whatever jazz master jaguar mustang check out classic vibe they're always good i'll go back over here man 300 and something quid that color is from maybe there's a little bit it's more clarity in those pickups yeah i think maybe these strings could do with a change at some point but that's the whole thing with that's what i was saying with classic vibe okay so you you change all the pots and you change the pickups and you spend 150 200 pounds on it and it's uh yeah i don't think you have to change the pickup for it let me show the colors of the mustang  Moving on to the neck, we've got a mahogany neck with a 12 inch radius, nice and slim but round on the back so very very comfortable and the SG scale length is very similar to the Les Paul so it's very very suitable for those with smaller hands. We've got white binding running around the edges, very very clean and crisp indeed with rolled fretboard edges here, vintage frets and then the trapezoid inlays on there as well which looks super cool. Then moving on to the headstock we've got our classic Gibson headstock with the Gibson logo, SG on the truss rod cover and then the little inlay and again different to the 61 version which had the vintage tuners on, now we've got Grover Rotomatic tuners which are a little bit more modern, slightly higher ratio but obviously if you want that vintage look, the classic SG look you need to go for the 61 and it's a more expensive guitar so this is a really nice compromise.  So the body is your classic SG mahogany, finished in nitrocellulose, nice and lightweight thanks to the slim tapered body design. If we turn over you can see the contours around here, nice sharp double cutaways on here, really really nice design. So as we move over to the top of the guitar we've got the extended scratch plate that we don't find on the 61. On the 61 the scratch plate is just in the lower half of the guitar, in this case it extends all the way up into the upper half and actually behind the tunomatic bridge as well

Gibson 2019 SG Standard Heritage Cherry Review

I was thinking about upgrading the pickups in my guitar and then I got the EP and my guitar instantly sounded better. I recently got  Vintage's "SG" and it's great for a middling brand, I was happy with it for the price, but when I added the EP it sounds better than any Gibson SG (okay, except maybe the '74) I've ever had.

Gibson did a survey and found that most average guitar players own 8 guitars. When I heard that I instantly started counting my guitars. I'm definitely average, and I currently own 10 guitars. I let the thought of owning just 8 guitars sit for a couple of weeks, but today I got busy, dusted off a few guitars that I hadn't played in a few years, took some photos and put them up for sale.

Out of the 10 guitars I own there are only 2 I would never sell; A Jackson King V which was my first big guitar purchase which I earned with hard work as a night packer packing shelves at the local supermarket in high school (it was my gigging guitar when I used to be in a band), and my Korean made Squier Strat that I bought in 1997 (I still love it more than my Fender American Pro II Strat!).

I'm now wondering, if I sold off all the guitars that I'm more than happy to let go of, what guitars would take their place?

The SG has been perfect electronically. great pickups, push-pull coil splits and wiring from the factory.

American made guitars... Are they really better?

Warning, this may just turn into a rant. But this has been driving me nuts lately.

Let me preface this by saying, I’m a Gibson guy. I love them and have always loved them. Even before i knew what was what, I lusted after Les Pauls and 335’s They just make sense and feel right to me.

That being said, I’m 6 Gibsons in and each one of them has some type of flaw, or quality control issue. Things that (to me) should have been caught before it left the factory, especially for the price. I know there will always be some small issue with a “handmade” guitar, but some of these just seemed careless.

I have also owned American made fenders, and while i don’t see as many quality issues there as far as the bodies are concerned, I have had issues with fret ends etc. Nothing crazy though.

So, that leads me to my long winded point. I’ve owned and played guitars made in places like China, Korea and Indonesia and Japan. They all arrive and are amazing right out of the box. I’m not saying their components and hardware rival the American made guitars, but the bodies, the binding, the necks, the finish everything has always been damn near perfect. This has always blown my mind, because i was always raised to think USA does it best for guitars. But at a fraction of the cost, I’m able to buy a Guild, or Squier or Eastwood or a number of other brands that are all fantastic guitars. And if you want to mod them or switch pickups, wiring, knobs etc, you don’t feel as bad.  So why do these non USA made guitars get such a bad rap? Hell, the top end Gretsch guitars are made in Japan. No one seems to mind that.

I just got a new Gibson and I’m going to have to send it back because of a binding issue, but instead of replacing it, i can buy a handful of really fun guitars that I’d probably get just as much enjoyment out of.   Why am I so hung up on this Made in the USA thing?  End Rant

 It's iconic, and it's iconic for a reason. Now, we get two humbucker pickups with no push-pull controls or anything like that, so it's an absolute rock machine. The neck pickup is the 490R, and the bridge pickup is the 490T. Gibson humbuckers, they get them right

The Gibson SG Standard Review - Did Gibson Get it Right?

my Gibson SG feels much nicer in the hands, truss rod needs adjustment slightly less often, finishing work is way better (mostly just a visual thing but it does feel better to play when you can see the craftsmanship), they sound more or less the same to me but I’m not a huge tone nerd and play with a lot of distortion, frets are much flatter but they’d been replaced with stainless steel by the previous owner so that’s more thanks to whichever talented luthier did the fret work, I’m not sure how consistent they are stock. both modern made only a few years apart (a 2009 Epi and 2012 Gibson iirc) paid almost 3x as much for my Gibson second hand as the Epi costs new though. dollar for dollar the Epiphone is a better deal but the Gibson is certainly a better guitar.

I'm debating on buying my first Gibson this weekend and going with an SG model. Thing is, I already own one of the Epiphone "Inspired by Gibson" SG models and wanted to know how much higher quality the Gibson would be. I'd be trading in the Epi for a discount. 

I've always wanted to own a Gibson and never had a guitar Made In the USA after playing for 14 years. 

Will I notice a huge jump in quality?

 So if you're really into classical guitar, you're going to want to go for that. You're going to get that thicker nut width, a lot of string spacing difference. Yeah, the nut on this side is 0.05 millimeters wider

 You've got the Epiphone. I do. This is the Epiphone SG Standard. It is a mahogany body just like an SG Standard would be

 I think this one has a bit more trouble to the pickups. There's a bit more kind of a wide range sound, more airiness to the pickups. So you just have a big, broader spectrum that I think these are definitely more focused, very mid-range, could sound muddy if you don't EQ the amp right, but are very, very serviceable period for just about any application. And so I think if those things were removed and people were being honest, their playing styles and preferences would pick the guitar, not the brand name, the price or anything else

Gibson SG Standard vs. Epiphone SG Standard | Is Epiphone Closing the Gap?

 I'm going to assume that Gibson, that's the Gibson thing. But I really liked that. So I'm going to keep hold of that. I think that was great

 The bodies are quite thick and they weigh a ton, so naturally I gravitated more towards the SG. Also, in terms of Gibson guitars, it's quite a strap-like guitar with a double cutaway in the thin body, so for me, this was the obvious choice. It's nowhere near as heavy as a Gibson Les Paul. As well as doing this, I also play in a wedding band where sometimes I could be playing for over two hours in a night, and having a really heavy guitar around my neck for two hours is

 It's an actual photograph on proper photograph paper. I thought it was a really nice touch from Gibson. I'm going to assume that Gibson, that's the Gibson thing. But I really liked that

 One thing I did notice when I first got this guitar and when I was looking at pictures of it online and reading reviews and stuff like that before I actually got it was the tuners. I noticed that they're not the classic Gibson style, the sort of yellowy, greeny, plasticky-looking Gibson style. They have all the specs and the certificate of the guitar signed by the people in the factory and stuff like that. And another little search, which I thought was really nice was an actual photograph of my guitar in the factory
