I'm going to college this fall and am starting to think of what I'm going to need to prepare and bring with me, and one of the biggest problems I've come across is what I should do for an amp situation in my small-ish dorm. I currently have a Marshall DSL40 which I absolutely love, but as of right now I don't think I'll be taking it with me as it gets pretty loud and is kinda bulky. I also have a really small and crappy crate amp my grandfather gave me when I first started playing which I could bring with me, but its really not all that quality. The first solution I though of was getting studio monitors and playing through my interface with the digital amps I currently have in Helix Native so that I can practice, but also produce music. The second was a smallish practice amp that sounds nice but wont bring in noise complaints, and that I can take with me to play live and jam with friends. With the monitors I would have to eventually buy a new amp or get my Marshall up to university, but with an amp I would always have to record and mix music through headphones (which isn't all that bad, I just like the luxury of having monitors).

Best solution for college, monitors with digital amps, or small practice amp? [QUESTION]

 Tube snobs will look down, but you can get some phenomenal 'tone' out of these amps if you are willing to spend a little time tuning your patches. Also worth mentioning is that the III can get stupidly loud, I can barely stand going past 2 for practice, and with friends you can keep up with almost any drummer.  This is the perfect amp for a amateur player who is 'finding their sound' or a veteran who wants versatility while still being able to pull some excellent sounds out of his amp. Highly recommend one, and the red color on mine is quite sharp and stands out

I am a huge Mustang III amp fan after having played mine for the last 6 months. Extremely versatile, easy to use, and very good sound quality. The Fender models are truly excellent and I find myself enjoying some of the others a lot too. FUSE software lets you download other peoples patches, which is a nice bonus

Versatility and great sound

 The mastery sounded good, but to my ears it didn't sound $200 better than the stock bridge. The only mod back here is I did have West Lamb go ahead and he fit what you call it little brass I guess just fillers or whatever around the post so this bridge doesn't rock back and forth like they're supposed to and that does help with the tuning a lot. if you have a Mustang it's not staying in tune that well I'll think about asking your tech to do that before doing something else crazy. What I like to do to get my tremolo is the cool thing about these guitars

 You can actually yet probably see the difference there. It's a good guitar too, let's see so it's shorter, which means all the frets are closer together I'm 5/8 on a good day so that's really convenient for me. I can get it I can do stretches on this guitar that that I can't do as easily on other guitars. Also, the nut with up here is is the smaller one in 5/8 so it's very narrow up here which can for some people they don't like these guitars because of that reason

 Things about Mustang Yeah, they are thwack. II They don't have a lot of sustain on their own. Yeah, you're not going to get this thing to sing or store like a. Les Paul It's not going to have the power of the growl of a telly

 So yep, it's just me and Pete today. you are massively louder in my ears than I am so I hope you couldn't hear yourself yeah I think I can balance that out something uh we will we will um but yes so this is mine feels not really nice to play really like I can completely see how this has become kind of a cult classic yeah I don't even know necessarily this is a beginner's guitar anymore is it just becomes something that it might suit your style maybe maybe smaller guitars are more comfy for you maybe you just like that slightly anti-hero kind of vibe of the mustang um anti-hero that's a very cool very good word uh anyway anyway I mean it's the same one it's just the p90s in there it's got the palfero board it's got the satin finish neck it's got the fender tuners on the back there made in mexico nice satin a burgundy uh finish um four bolt on the back little sticker that says don't throw in the bin um and you know and the difference between between the p90s there's more volume in them you know oh that's the back it's really I'm not going to turn it down a little bit so if you again Pete and I were lucky enough to go to a brilliant pickup maker called Monty's recently who explained how a p90 is different to a single coil yeah and it's to do with where the magnet is in the in the pickup so proper single coils the the six pole pieces are actually magnetized and then the coppers wound like that on a p90 the pole pieces aren't magnetized but a big bar magnet sits underneath it which kind of creates the magnetic field and the coppers wound around the pole pieces as normal uh but yes generally speaking a p90 is a fatter louder version of a single coil so i mean it sounds great uh middle how are you finding the short scaleness of it i i think generally speaking they are a bit less stable in terms of tuning yeah in the 25 and a half inch scale length you know what it doesn't feel like a shorter guitar because the body is quite long right so the body is actually from here to here i reckon it's more or less the same as a telecast at least so when you got your arm over and it doesn't have the armrest which means that it's thinner isn't it this bit here it's that from and also it feels like this whole bit is a bit further you have to have your arm in a bit more when you arm further it's just a bit it's a different way of sitting with it it's not and it's not very balanced you see i love that i love that color oh yeah it's not as balanced as what were we trying the other day that was super balanced although was it the prs guitars but i don't know it's not no no it's it's top heavy a little bit top heavy isn't it yeah and i'm even leaning it on you know i mean what we're saying by that if you're not you know ideally what you kind of want for comfort is the guitar to fairly naturally hang it on a strap or on your lap in that position because if you're sitting and the bigger headstock on this does just make it want to um slide over but not i mean like once you've got your arm here so yeah yeah it's not it's not a problem but you still have to hold it up with your arm so there's you know but you know here's a bit of here's a bit of gain it's fat that front that front pickup is fat isn't it middle very spanky uh and then on the bridge that seems that seems like less output in the yeah i noticed that on this one it was like the neck pickup was fatter sounding yeah but i'm not sure i'm i'm not i'm not personally so keen on this i must admit the color i absolutely love it the color i just think it's a vibe it's got a vibe to it no i agree whatever just give them the full setup deluxe setup everything and you could have one of like every fender guitar that there was for sort of two grand probably yeah i mean the for the for the strat telly must not mustang strat telly uh jazz master and jaguar they were like 1400 quid yeah and that's what i mean but then and then you spend like do a bit of money on each one yeah it's a great shout it's you know if you just if you just want one of each and they're not where they're made or whatever yeah because these are super value for money i i do i think they play really really good and it 300 quid more is it worth it it was on the it's going to neck a bit fuller maybe sounding but i thought that the the classic vibe was definitely brighter and louder i think that's louder that sounds  Obviously, they're different guitars and different pickups, but those Firebird pickups in that guitar is such a unique sound and I don't know of any other guitar other than the Firebird 5 that will do that thing and I think that's really special. Now, we can't talk about the Firebird without talking about the players that made these guitars legendary, because much like other Gibson models of the time period, the Firebird actually wasn't a huge commercial success. They didn't sell a ton of them, but there's a handful of players that really put these guitars on the map through the 60s, all the way to today. First and foremost, the Stones pick these up

 In around 1962, Ted Mccarty meets a man named Ray Dietrich. Now, Ray Dietrich is the reason the Firebird exists, and he's a very interesting character. see he wasn't a guitar builder, a musician, or guitar designer at all. He was a car designer

 I think almost single-handedly made these guitars what they are today. These Firebird pickups through cranked twin reverbs on stage was a huge part of that searing Johnny Winner blues sound. and that's how I first got turned on to the Firebird. Gibson's Weirdest Guitar | What Is The Firebird Sound?

I actually straight traded DOWN a 2017 Gibson Firebird for a 2012 Gibson Studio Deluxe with upgrades. It's an iced tea burst finish with Bareknuckle Abraxas pickups. The neck isn't a slim taper 60s nor is it a fat chunky 50s neck. It's right in between and the most comfortable neck I've every played

Everyone's got a main guitar whether they admit it or not, and a fair few have stories.

Here's mine. It's an Epiphone LP Standard. The input jack can't be tightened much more than finger tight without the signal cutting out. The bridge pickup sporadically stops working until I scream at and fiddle with the input jack. I swear it's incorrectly grounded because it buzzes something rotten. There's a horrific amount of fret buzz and it's got loads of knocks in it. And to top it off whilst the humbuckers sound fine normally, when you coil tap them they sound more lifeless than the nearest graveyard.

Despite all this I almost always pick it up over my others, some of which are double the price and definitely play much better.

[DISCUSSION] What's the story behind your main guitar?

 Really slick looking now. I think it's really important to call out that with the Custom Shop Firebird It doesn't have the mini humbuckers that we've come to associate with. Firebirds It has full-sized humbuckers so that really turns it into kind of a little bit of a different beast. Very cool guitar, but I Want to make sure you take that into consideration

 18 and 19 models are still available at some of the big online retailers, so keep that in mind now. One thing to keep in mind about those budget Firebirds is that the one key differentiating factor between those and the standard Firebird is they do not have the neck through body design. They have a set neck like you'll find on a Les, Paul or an SG etc. But they don't have that classic neck through body design where it goes all the way through the body which is one of the you know kind of the hallmarks of the original Firebird so keep that in mind

 The 19 had low frets. these are medium jumbo I like that I like that change. There is one change that I don't like and I Talked about this in the Flying V video. the original Collection Flying V video they are no longer Gibson is no longer cryogenically freezing their frets and that treatment according to Gibson was supposed to make the frets last up to four times longer

 Now for the Firebird, you're only going to find the Firebird in the original collection and the Custom Shop There is no modern collection. Firebird Now if you look at the big five from Gibson that I like to call the big Five solid bodies, that is. We've got the Les Paul, SG flying the Explorer and Firebird right of those. the Firebirds The only one where you're not going to find a modern collection version

 It's a definitely, I want to be, if I was in a band and I just needed two or three guitars to just look different, that's where I'm going. That's where you're going, is it? I think so.  Yes. You've had variants, some with the headstock this way around, some with the headstock the other way around, some with the banjo style tuners. Oh, that way in there. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

 I'm used to that, full lock out. Why, can you explain to me why these are so close to each other, the two volume? Because they're just, they've got very quiet voices. If you've got five fingers, man. If they're trying to speak to each other and they're too far apart, the volume can't speak
