 This mix sounds more crisp and bright than anything else, with Callahan's rich baritone receiving some definition in the high-mids and the guitar strums and higher percussive hits benefiting from the excellent high-mid and high frequency clarity.

Orchestral tracks, like the opening scene in John Adams' The Gospel According to the Other Mary, sound phenomenal through the ER4 XR. The lower register instrumentation gets a little added depth, but never anything that sounds unnatural. The higher register strings, brass, and vocals are delivered with strong definition and brightness, but the mids are never ignored. You hear detail and definition throughout the frequency range, with beautifully resonant lows when they appear in the mix, and excellent clarity on the brass stabs and vocal performances

 The kick drum loop's attack gets plenty of treble presence, allowing it to stay sharp and slice through the layers of the beat, while the vinyl crackle in the background isn't pushed too far forward, but is definitely illuminated a bit more than it is through earphones that have less presence and clarity in the high-mids and highs. The three vocal performances on this track are always clear and crisp&mdash;there's superb definition in the high-mid and highs, but never any added sibilance or harshness.

If you've read any of my other reviews, you know that I value accuracy when it comes to audio. The most accurate in-ears are probably the ER4 XR's siblings, the Etymotic ER4 SR. Yet the ER4 SR might sound almost clinical and a little light on bass response to many listeners, while the ER4 XR (which stands for "extended response") earphones deliver nearly identical high frequency definition while adding in a little more bass response. The result is superb clarity matched with full-bodied richness&mdash;every realm of the frequency range is delivered with exciting detail

Etymotic ER4 XR Review

I was hoping for something amazing. These did not live up to expectations. I compared them to a pair of Denon AH-C120s ($100) and a pair of Nu-Force earbuds NE800M ($90). These two earbuds produce a richer, more 3D sound sound then the Etymotic ER4XRs

 I do like the fit and weight of the ER4XRs. They are very light as are the Denon's (Nuforce's are very heavy in comparison). I will continue to use them and maybe in time come to give a more favorable review.

I Was So So Hoping...But.....

 I'm like you know totally okay with not being able to hear a mosquito that wandered into the recording studio because it doesn't really have much of a practical effect. More importantly the XR may not sound overtly harsh but it still can sound a bit raw and it has a sort of mid-forward glare to the sound that the smoother ATH IMO 2 doesn't have. Now I think of the XR as a natural upgrade to the IMO 2 that I've been looking for for a long time because it does have a better bass section, a punchier bass and a clearer vocal section but it doesn't have the same smoothness as the IMO 2. And if you wanted something with similar levels of clarity but with richer bass tone and less mid-rawness for around the same price I'd go the AKG N40 which I picked up in Hong Kong and so far I'm liking a lot as well

Now I can verify this with test tones because basically I can hear up to about 18kHz and the XR like it says on the spec sheet does top out at about 16kHz. Etymotic ER4XR Review: A New Reference

 Edimotic has been in the high-end IEM scene for a long time. When I first started collecting

 headphones, I started by collecting earphones. And at that time, there was basically four

 recommendations on the high end of the market. The Shure SE530, the Sennheiser IE8, the Ultimate

 Ears TF10, and the Edimotic ER4S. All under $1000. What innocent times. The Edimotic was

 regarded then as the sort of high-frequency detail king. But a lot of people, including

 myself, were scared off because the Edimotics were kind of known for having a subdued bass

 response that some people consider accurate, and other people consider anemic. Now this

 would be a good chance to have a whole video about subjectivity and objectivity and references

 and relativity, but we're not going to do that because the market has moved on. And

 now after many years, Edimotic has released a refresh of the ER4S, the ER4SR, and they've

 also released this. The new Edimotic ER4XR. An earphone with a custom driver tuned to

 sound like the SR in the highs, but with a 3 to 4 decibel bass boost in the low frequencies

 below 100Hz. And I know 3 to 4 decibel bass boost in low frequencies below 100Hz may not

 slash Lachlan likes a thing. So let's start with design and comfort. Now firstly, these

 earphones look like 349 US dollar laser guns. Pew pew pew! Secondly, they don't look much

 different from the old ER4S. Here's what's changed. The earphone body is now made of

 aluminium and the cable is a detachable non-rotating MMCX style connector. You get a

 lightweight Kevlar coated cable. It's basically a no fuss practical design. One thing I don't

 like about this design is that the left and the right channel are not clearly differentiated.

 There's just a little bit of an L and an R very faintly in the black rubber on the cable,

 but at this point, you're probably not even paying attention to the cable. You're looking

 at this tip and you're thinking, how is this going to feel going into my ears? Am I really ready

 to try deep insertion? Am I really ready to have a new intimate relationship with earwax?

 Well I can tell you, my first time was pretty scary as well, but I got used to it.

 whether they're comfortable for you is probably very dependent on the shape of your ear canal.

 For me, I found them surprisingly comfortable. Now the earpieces are quite lightweight and

 you just have to get used to the sensation of the weight being distributed along your ear canal.

 Instead of your outer ear like with other earphones, the only thing I had an issue

 with is that when you wear them cable down like this, the slight weight of the cable still pulls

 on your inner ear, which doesn't feel great. Now you can fix this somewhat by using the included

 cable clip, but I prefer just to wear them cable up like this, even though it looks a bit goofy.

 Now I just live in constant fear of someone bumping into my head and like ice picking me

 in the brain with these, like Trotsky. Don't expect to be able to sleep on these comfortably
