I've been really impressed with the Edifier s1000 mkii, extremely practical and well rounded speakers for the price, the fidelity and detail leaves very little to be desired. I have also not heard a bad word about the 1850s and 1700s which apparently are better suited for near field listening and probably more suited to your budget.

After using crappy monitor built-in speakers for years, I finally decide to invest some money(not a lot though) in getting a good pair of speakers. But it is difficult for me to pick a nice budget one. My **budget is around CAD 200** (or USD 150). Mostly listening to electronic, classic, and pop music. I will use it as multimedia as well.

As a newbie to audiophiles, should I get some decent active speakers like Edifier, Presonus? Or I should split my budget in half, get a brand new amplifier, and used passive speakers. Something like Audioengine A2+ or Kanto yu2 will be nice although they are out of my budget. I really like their design.

** You want consumer-oriented powered speakers, that have connections and controls that are suited for use with consumer equipment. If you can go up to the $300ish range, I would suggest looking at the nicer Edifier models—maybe the S1000mkII if you can find it locally, or maybe something in the R1850 or R2000 series. If you can find any speakers made by Swan, they also have some well-liked options. FYI, **most of the speakers you listed are NOT studio monitors

Hi, I need near field speakers, basically trying to replace headphones with speakers next to my PC after I got tinnitus. I intend to use the speakers at relatively low volume next to the PC (to hopefully not annoy neighbors), as such the priority is sound quality at low volume and it does not matter too much how loud the speakers can be. I listen to all kinds of music, play games and watch youtube a lot, so they should be generally applicable. Latency is also an issue for games, so hopefully if the speakers are bluetooth, either the latency is low or there is still some way to use them with low latency wired. Also the speakers will need to be placed somewhere on the table next to the PC, so, while I will try to figure out something if they are bigger, being relatively compact would be a nice to have.

Since amazon shipping costs quite a bit here (especially for something like speakers) it is generally cheaper to get items like this locally. I have compiled a list with some studio monitors (they seem to fit the on the desk / near field use case from what I understand) based on a lot of top lists I found together with local prices (in euros). They should all be for pairs (unless I made a mistake somewhere). Feel free to suggest any other speakers. 

If possible it would be nice to consider the price difference vs quality as well - if something is a 100 euros more expensive but very slightly better, it might be better to go with the cheaper option. Basically which from these speakers would you see as the best price to value for the use case.

I also at the end added a small list of some PC speakers as well just in case studio monitors are bad for general use (listed ascending by price).

Which near field speakers would you pick for general use from this list?

These guys aren't tiny, but they produce great sounds that fills a small living room nicely. Probably best about them is that they don't require a receiver and can be added to your TV, computer, or record player.  The Bluetooth features work way better than expected and produce rich and clear sound from a phone or laptop. My only gripe there is that there isn't much security on the speakers, so really anyone could use it if it's turned on

Good quality, substantial bookshelf speakers

Adam T5V/T8V) but OP has specifically separated them from consumer speakers like the Edifier. I also separate them because of aesthetics: studio monitors do sound really good, but they don't look that good on a living room. :). I do think the Edifier s2000 Pro / MKIII are really good for the price

I've researched and tested this speaker bracket ad nauseum, and I have yet to find anything that can compete.

I've tested them next to audioengine, Kanto, Fluance, and many others. Nothing in the price range can match them sonically, let alone once you bring in build quality, components, and features. Studio monitors can compete sound quality wise, but lack convenience and are built for near field - the KRKs I used to have back in the day were similarly priced and decent, fat, and warm (boomy, harsh, and colored too), but I still think I'd rather master a track on my edifiers. I've also tested the Edifiers next to some decent passive speakers (KEF, Polk, B&amp;W, PSB, etc.) and they hold up surprisingly well.

The Edifiers just don't have any major flaws. They could use more presence, warmth, depth, and soundstage, but they are so damn tight, flat, and dynamic with great range and no fatigue. They are sensitive to placement and don't have a sub out, but they have every other feature you'd want.

So please, can someone point me towards a better active speaker in this price range? I will buy it and test it; write a review if the people so desire. I'll never give up this hunt, cause that's what (budget) audiophiles do.

Feel free to ask questions on active speakers in this range, give suggestions, or tell me about suggestions in the $500-$100 price range (especially if you've tested them next to some of the others mentioned).

Are there any active bookshelf speakers under $500 that can beat Edifier s2000 Pro / MKIII?

 These speakers do very well in all of the categories. Anime music is the hardest to balance due to the screeching highs but Im sure nothing the adjustment knobs in the back can fix. I also doubt most speakers can balance the screech of those Japanese girl voices. :P

Positive reviews are generally accurate. I was looking for more base and treble control than these speakers offer.

 It lives up to that rating. I use it only with Bluetooth and my iPad or iPhone. I have it about seven feet high, on top of a wide cabinet in the living room and control it with the little remote control. It’s important to remember that it can only connect to one source at a time, and it doesn’t automatically disconnect, so if you connect it to your iPhone, then find you can’t connect with your iPad, go back to your iPhone and disconnect that first

 Then the iPad will connect with no trouble. There is a thick cable that connects the two speakers. They do not connect by Bluetooth with each other. That may affect where you place the speakers

 So there were a lot of feedback in that unboxing video. I want to thank all of you for giving me their honest opinions and and reviews. Thank you very much again now in this video i'm going to do the tough task of reviewing a subwoofer which is not easy at all. The sub goes very low and i may not have an equipment that can record that sub going that low and also remember subwoofer, is all about an ambience and a setup that setup can never be reproduced over in a video call

 So, whenever i'm listening to music, either via bluetooth, chair or via um, amazon, music or from spotify or from youtube, i played in 2.1 setup, so stereo plus is a woofer, and that gives a kick which is unbelievable. Like that's, i even if i try to make you guys list, listen, i i won't be able to pass that that greatness across. So as as a as a user of rhythmic l12, i think i'm a happy user now after two and a half months now, if you ask me that, would i have been better off buying two cheaper subwoofers rather than buying a good one

 The government announced logged on towards the end of march, and i placed the order for the subwoofer somewhere in the middle of the march, which means that this subwoofer was not coming to me. During the i mean, it was not coming for me coming to me for very long time. It came to me sometime mid mid, may that's when i did the unboxing and the first impressions video and that video, as you would have if you've seen. You would know that i wasn't really uh greatly impressed with how the subwoofer was performing

 I can add the second one, which will give me uh added experience, but without that as well, i'm totally fine and great with having a single suburb, which is giving me a good good, sound output. So if you are in dilemma, what you should use should you use two medium casting subwoofer or one expensive? I think i'd leave it up to you so uh. Coming to the end, i've been very happy with the subwoofer extremely happy, and i hope that in this review i was able to pass on some information to you. Ask me any questions
